Re: midi file converter

: i want a converter for my keyboard panasonic sx-kc611 and i want one arabian rhythm tks
: I have recently bought a keyboard which is Panasonic sx-kc611.
: Which is similar to the Technics K600 keyboard.

: Although it reads *.mid (midi files) and plays them with no problem, its when it saves my created music onto floppy disk on its own drive, the music is saved as three different file formats (.lsw .seq .sqf) that I have never heard of before.

: the literature with the keyboard says "on play back you can enjoy GM (General Midi) as well as SMF (Standard Midi Files)"

: So then

: Question 1) what are the (.lsw .seq .sqf) files ?

: Question 2) My problem is how can I convert the (.lsw .seq .sqf) files to (*.mid) files
: so I can use themon my computers midi file player ?

: Question 3) can I save my music from the keyboard direct to the *.mid midi file format ?

: Question 4) how can i save thre rhythms generated by the keyboard to the midi format ?

: Question 5) Is there a converter available to convert to *.mid once ive saved it in the (.lsw .seq .sqf) file format ?

: Question 6) or is there a player available for my computer that reads these (.lsw .seq .sqf) file formats and gives one the option to save as *.mid ?

: someone please please help me
: any help will be gratefully received
: please reply to my email address

Eliminating gaps between tracks on mp3 cd's ?? PLZ HELP

I'm busy writing a lot of my albums and single tracks to cd in mp3 format for my mp3/cd player.
Only I have 2 problems.

1.How do I eliminate the gaps between tracks, I tried using "mp3 merger" to join the tracks of an album to one big mp3, the gaps are gone then, but I cant cycle between the tracks of the albums, I have to listen to the whole long mp3.

2. When writing tracks that aren't necessarily from the same album I also want to eliminate that gap but at the same time want them to crossfade from one track to the next or it just sounds wrong.

Is there any program out there with which I could accomplish this ? Freeware or shareware would be be great, but generally anything.

If you can help out plz mail me at:

Eliminating gaps between tracks on mp3 - try this free program

Jona,

Try this free MP3 program - It might help if it is not your player's vbr seeking errors.

It may also cleanup these errors depending what program might have captured the MP3 - Ripped it from the original source.

I have not been able to perform the fade out and fade in capbilities it promises but have only just discovered the program, and not expermited enough. Yes they have a $20 dollar version that has more capablities, but free is good - to start

MP3 Trim: http://www.logiccell.com/~mp3trim/

Good luck and let me know what you think

Re: Eliminating gaps between tracks on mp3 cd's ?? PLZ HELP

If it's anything like my in-car Kenwood MP3 player, the 2-second gap isn't down to how the disc was recorded, but how the player itself works. It may be worthwhile checking with the manufacturer to see if this is the case, otherwise, as you say, the only way is to make one looooonnnnng MP3, losing track access in the process.

Thnx mate,
I'll check up on that :)

Drum software & MIDI

I would like to hear your experiences about creating drums. I use Logic Audio 4.7 to produce the drum, but I don't like the samples used by default. My question is: Is there any software that allow me to change the samples, once I have finished all the drum in MIDI format, and transform it to a *.wav file?

Any other suggestion will be appreciate!

Please, write to ma2trmod@hotmail.com for answers!

Game Music Rippers!!

i have several games that have some great music on them, mainly the Need for speed games, and i would like to be able to get that music but there not stored as files in the game and a cd music ripper (the ones i have) are not able to rip the music from them, so...
could u plz tell me where i can find a game music ripper or if u know of a way that doesnt involve buying to much or spending to much, or isnt to hard, for getting the music from the game.
or if u know of a site that would be able to help me, thx a lot
Col-
plz reply to my email address and not the forum.

Re: Game Music Rippers!!

Total Recorder might be worth a look. It records anything that passes through your sound card, but I think it'll only record for 15 minutes max (which should be enough).

The link should be in the software section under audio recorders. Otherwise, try Yahoo.

What does steganography have to do with computer music ????

Blindside is an application of steganography that allows one to conceal a file,
or set of files within a standard computer image. The new image looks identical
to the human eye, but can contain up to 50k or so of secret data. The hidden
files can also be password encrypted, to prevent unauthorised access to their
data.

DataMark Technologies currently market four digital steganography products -
StegComm for confidential multimedia communication, StegMark for digital
watermarking of digital storage media, StegSafe for digital storage and linkage
and StegSign for e-commerce transactions. Each software product is packaged
into a Standard version and a Professional version. While the Standard versions
cater to the general needs of our customers, additional security and
accessibility features are found in our Professional versions. Please select
and view the various product descriptions, and contact us for further
information.

Digital Picture Envelope is a program you can make your secret data
imperceptible to any human eyes. So, you can store/send it very safely
in/through your computer. Actually, it can embed your secret data in a vessel
image (we call it a "dummy" image, or a "picture envelope") without changing
the visual quality of the dummy image. It does not change even the file size. If
you want to see the secret data, you can easily restore it from the secret-
embedded dummy image.

With Encrypt Pic, you can hide a file (binary, text) in a picture (24 bits
BMP). When the process is finish, you can't see the difference: for your eyes,
the picture is the same!

The program gifshuffle is used to conceal messages in GIF images by shuffling
the colourmap, which leaves the image visibly unchanged. gifshuffle works with
all GIF images, including those with transparency and animation, and in
addition provides compression and encryption of the concealed message.

Hide4PGP is a freeware program distributed as source code in ANSI C and
precompiled executables for DOS (any version but 1.x - is there one outside the
museum?), OS/2 (Warp and up), and the Win32 console (9x and NT). It's purpose
is to hide any data in a way that the viewer or listener does not recognize any
difference. This is called steganography.

Encrypt Files & Messages into redundant space in Windows Bitmap (BMP) image
files.

Invisible Secrets 2.1 offers you the possibility to encrypt and hide files in
other files (carriers) which are not suspect of encryption. First, Invisible
Secrets will encrypt the sensitive data using a specified password and
cryptosystem (algorithm). After the encryption, the chipertext will be inserted
in the carrier. The resulted carrier (which contains the real message) can be
attached to an email message (which is a fake message), or published on a web
page near hundreds of other pictures (or other carriers) from where the
addressee (the only person who knows which is the right image) can download it
without revealing his/hers identity.

JPHIDE and JPSEEK are programs which allow you to hide a file in a jpeg visual
image. There are lots of versions of similar programs available on the internet
but JPHIDE and JPSEEK are rather special. The design objective was not simply
to hide a file but rather to do this in such a way that it is impossible to
prove that the host file contains a hidden file. Given a typical visual image,
a low insertion rate (under 5%) and the absence of the original file, it is not
possible to conclude with any worthwhile certainty that the host file contains
inserted data. As the insertion percentage increases the statistical nature of
the jpeg coefficients differs from "normal" to the extent that it raises
suspicion. Above 15% the effects begin to become visible to the naked eye. Of
course some images are much better than others when used a host file - plenty
of fine detail is good. A cloudless blue sky over a snow covered ski paradise
is bad. A waterfall in a forest is probably ideal.

JSteg Shell is a STEGANOGRAPHY program. This means it is used to hide
information within another file, in this case, a JPG image file. You use it to
hide information (a file) in a JPG image, then use it to retrieve the
information back. Unlike cryptography which renders a secret unreadable,
steganography hides the very existance of the secret.

MP3Stego will hide information in MP3 files during the compression process. The
data is first compressed, encrypted and then hidden in the MP3 bit stream.
Although MP3Stego has been written with steganographic applications in mind it
might be used as a copyright marking system for MP3 files (weak but still much
better than the MPEG copyright flag defined by the standard). Any opponent can
uncompress the bit stream and recompress it; this will delete the hidden
information -- actually this is the only attack we know yet -- but at the
expense of severe quality loss.

NICETEXT is a package that converts any file into pseudo-natural-language text.

OutGuess is a universal steganographic tool that allows the insertion of hidden
information into the redundant bits of data sources. The nature of the data
source is irrelevant to the core of OutGuess. The program relies on data
specific handlers that will extract redundant bits and write them back after
modification. In this version the PNM and JPEG image formats are supported. In
the next paragraphs, images will be used as concrete example of data objects,
though OutGuess can use any kind of data, as long as a handler is provided.

S-Mail is able to encrypt any files in a very tough way and then hides the
encrypted data in any EXE or DLL files (programs or WIN Runtime libraries).
That means, instead of sending encrypted files over the Internet (which is
raising suspicion), our customers are sending full working program files. The
program files are only carrier files and only the recipient knows, that there
is a hidden message inside.

Scramdisk is a program that allows the creation and use of virtual encrypted
drives. Basically, you create a container file on an existing hard drive which
is created with a specific password. This container can then be mounted by the
Scramdisk software which creates a new drive letter to represent the drive. The
virtual drive can then only be accessed with the correct passphrase. Without
the correct passphrase the files on the virtual drive are totally inaccessible.

Scytale 1.5 is designed for people that use or want to use PGP 2.6.x. A brief
guide is included to help you to select the right version of PGP, find it on
the Internet and install it correctly. This guide also includes a tutorial that
explains what public key cryptography is and how to use some useful and basic
commands of PGP. Once familiarized with PGP, Scytale helps you to take
advantage of its power.

The program snow is used to conceal messages in ASCII text by appending
whitespace to the end of lines. Because spaces and tabs are generally not
visible in text viewers, the message is effectively hidden from casual
observers. And if the built-in encryption is used, the message cannot be read
even if it is detected.

Stash-It will allow you to hide (and extract, of course) any data file inside a
perfectly normal BMP, TIFF, PNG or PCX file.

Hiding data into the palette of a GIF file.

Steganos hides secret information in sound, image, and text files. This
sensitive data is being encrypted beforehand. That way files can be sent over
the Internet without being discovered by a third party.

Hide and recover encrypted data in your GIF files with Stego

StegParty is a system for hiding information inside of plain-text files. Unlike
similar tools currently available it does not use random gibberish to encode
data -- it relies on small alterations to the message, like changes to spelling
and punctuation. Because of this you can use any plain-text file as your
carrier , and it will be more-or-less understandable after the secret message
is embedded.

Software to hide any data in unsuspicious text in order to store or communicate
secrets (textual steganography).

wbStego is a tool that hides any type of file in bitmap images, text files,
HTML files or Adobe PDF files. The file in which you hide the data is not
optically changed. It can be used to exchange sensitive data securely or to add
hidden copyright information to the file.

How Steganography is important in Audio Software. (or) DONT BIT

I appreciate that you value the integrity of this discussion board, but
I believe that this is a relevant post. Consider, for example, my reference
to a program which embeds data in mp3's. Furthermore, the general topic of
steganography holds great relevance to audio recording and playback.

While much of popular steganography has historically focused upon
visual file formats such as JPEG, audio steganography is a very
viable channel, and lends itself quite naturally to recording and
audio softwares.

Another point of relevance is the issue of digital watermarking.
If anyone here would like to know how to encrypt their copyright
data into their songs, this would help get them on that track.
Some of the best articles about digital watermarking are found in
publications such as the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society.
Obviously AES sound innovations are relevant to this discussion
group, no matter how abstract.

It's also an issue for those who would like to experiment with
alternative forms of audio synthesis. MetaSynth, and Coaguala
and BMP2WAV are such synthesis programs which could double as
steganographic tools.

It doesn't take a huge mental leap to discover that pictures
can make interesting sounds, and sounds can make interesting
pictures. Expand that into other data formats, and you have
even more possibilities.

The other reason that I have chosen to post about steganography
in this forum, is because there has been discussion here about
copyright laws as pertains to digital media storage and creation
of derivative works. I am merely adding another dimension to that
ongoing discussion.

Furthermore, transfers and conversions of file types and their
data is of the utmost importance to anyone dealing with sounds.
It's always important to know the difference between noise and
information. It looks as if our whole little exchange here
expresses that too. You're calling my post "noise", and I'm
calling it relevant audio information.

Another nice point: You may think that graphics have
nothing to do with audio software and discussion, but
if this is the case, then why are so many audio programs
adding video editing feature!!? ProTools and SoundForge
and DDClip & Cubase varieties all have some level of video
editing capabilities. Even the loathsome Windows Media Player
and its clones deal heavily with video and image formats as
well as encrypted and/or embedded data.

A case has even been made that object-oriented programming,
the foundation of advanced software development, depends upon
a keen understanding of hidden and/or embedded data formats.

Even MIDI itself could be considered a form of
steganography when you consider the sample dump standard.
MIDI is designed to transmit only note data, but SDS MIDI
allows for audio data to be sent as well, invisible to many
MIDI devices. You could say the same about SMPTE timecode,
AES/EBU ethernet uses, and even relate the hidden data
issue to SPDIF and SCMS copy protection.

Consider any form of disk compression or file compression.
If there is more than one compressed file in the archive,
then it has instantly become a steganography issue, whether
you like it or not. If you expect people to stop discussing
file compression formats here just because you find it unpleasing,
then you might as well ask hitsquad.com to stop distributing softare
as ZIP or HQX or SIT files!

WMF and MP3 and MOD and A-law (.AU) and AIFC formats all involve
data compression, and henceforth, steganographic capabilities.
There are of course many more compressed audio formats, and there
are more being developed all the time. I invite discussion on steganography
so that we as a group will be more equipped to deal with the future formats. This
is especially of interest to those who favor development of compressed audio formats
which aren't commercially or governmentally supported.

I figure that the more audio enthusiasts learn about
steganography, the better their technical music-making
skills will become. They will also become better at
dealing with the related politics of data storage.

Last but not least, the following types of questions all relate
to both audio software and steganography:

How do I erase my Windows Media Player history?
How do I edit the ID tags of my mp3 files?
How do I get the names of my CD songs online? (CDDB)
How do I decompress a music software download ?

Well, that's it. I hope I have at least increased your
understanding of my position even if you still find the
need to argue.

The nice thing about public forums as these, is that
as long as people read the messages, there is progress.
I am happy just knowing that anyone besides "Andy P"
will be reading this and benefitting from my informative
posts. If in the future, censorship threatens our nice
forum of free and anonymous discussion, at least those
with steganographic tools will be able to communicate
with less undue threat of persecution from you or others.

Re: How Steganography is important in Audio Software. (or) DONT

Point taken.

Doubt Becomes Power for Men of Substance

Hey, Andy. I'm sorry i sounded so coarse. I apologize for
responding so sharply. Actually, I'm glad you didn't take
my post at face value. The fact that you questioned its
validity is a good thing. People aren't afraid to question
the validity of statements and advertisements are proper allies
in my book.

I will try to take less of a "know-it-all" type attitude, and
try to stay a bit more on point, even when I'm focusing upon
things a bit deep left field.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF I CAN RECORD MY OLD CASSETTE TAPES ON TO CD AND IF SO HOW

Re: cassetts to cd

: I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF I CAN RECORD MY OLD CASSETTE TAPES ON TO CD AND IF SO HOW

Read previous posts - the answer is "YES"

L J W,

Yes, is the answer to your question. Did you read my previous postings? This is only a matter of bringing in the audio, from a player one side of the cassette at a time. "Capturing the music" then using an audio editor to separate the one long recording file into selections.

Depending on the quality, of the tapes, and the cassette player, and most importantly your sound card, you might need to normalize or clean the separate MP3 or wav files.

With files cleaned and in .wav file format, then you can write/burn them to CD.

See previous posts, for my suggestion of inexpensive software in the audio section at the top of this Internet page, to accomplish this procedure.

You can do that. Just look in this forum for the answer because it gets asked regularly. Secondly, try searching for 'cassette' on the <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/search/">search page</a>.

Help with Cubasis VST

Hi there, I just started using this software and I can't seem to figure out how to create track breaks in my music. I'm not creating the typical separate arragements and then pulling them down into the song for separate tracks. What I've done is recorded a live 74 minute mix into one arrangement. Now what I want to do is go back and create tracks in that arrangement so when I burn to CD I can skip forwards and backwards.

Any help is greatly appreciated...please use my e-mail.
Thank you!
AK

Re: Help with Cubasis VST

Alan, unfortunately, I can't offer you any help to your question, but I was hoping that you could help me. I've also just started using this program, and I have a delay when recording and I can't seem to fix it. I'll put down the drums and then I'll put down the vocals, or whatever, and they are never in sync? Have you experienced this problem too? Maybe you could help me?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.....

Re: Help with Cubasis VST

The short answer: get CDWave

The long answer:

To burn CD tracks, you need to export your Cubasis
song/arrangement to a WAVE (.WAV) file. You can do
this by pressing the button next to the master faders
in the mix window, or you can select the option from
the File menu. I like using the file menu command,
because I can type easier than using a mouse.

In the export command, all you do is name the output
file, and wait for Cubasis to render it. It can take
a while, depending on how long your song is.

Before you do this, be sure to turn off any other
programs running in the background, and don't connect
or disconnect any USB devices. It also helps to purge
the RAM first, if you have a RAM purging program such
as MemMax.EXE (Memory Max: freeware). This is simply
because audio rendering with lots of tracks and plug-ins
requires intense computing power, and it can be kept
stable if you keep the system still and simple.

After rendering is done, you can quit Cubasis and
load the .WAV file into an editor such as CDWAVE.EXE
(CD Wave: freeware) or WaveLab Lite. There you can
cut any extra space at the beginning or end. I like to
render my songs with blank space at the beginning so
that any soundcard, MIDI, or VST processing delays
don't make me miss the beginning of the song. I then
truncate the lead silence in WaveLab Lite, and save the
file.

Once you song .WAV file is edited to your liking,
all you need to do is add it to your CD-Burning list
in Master Unit or Easy CD Creator, or Exact Audio Copy (freeware).
Master Unit works ok, and comes with Cubasis VST, but I
like Exact Audio Copy better. Easy CD Creator is nice
for when I want to make CD+Extra Disks, but I don't like
how it always turns on CD/CD-ROM Autoplaying. (This is
a drag since some CD-ROMS run troublesome programs; I don't
want them to automatically run!!)

Anyhow, the thing to keep in mind, is that your
CD-R program determines track splits, not your
multitracking software (Cubasis). Some CD-R
programs let you add extra track splits, but most
just rely upon the natural separation of AIFF and WAVE
files.

If you would like to split a .WAV file before burning
a disk, then you can use the freeware CDWave. If you need to join
.WAV files, then you can use AddaWav (also freeware). If you can't
find AddaWav, use WavGlue (freeware), but be sure to only use
files of the same sample rate and bit resolution.

AnalogX.com has a freeware utility called AutoTune
which can be used to set tons of files to the same
bit resolution and sampling rate at once. It is a
little trickier with 24bit files, but it does work
wonders with 16bit files and can also be used to
match tunings nicely.

Good luck.

p.s.- you could use a program such as SoundForge
to place separation markers into your WAVE files
if you don't want permanent separators, but need
to note sections. The markers aren't saved on a
burnt CD, but you can export the markers as a
text file. This is rather handy if you need to
use the same divisions on different files. CDWave
also can do this, but with the added ability to
split the file at the marker points!

recording midi piano

Hi guys

I've got an Echo mia soundcard, a 12 channels mixer and a digital piano, which I use as well as master keyboard.

My question is: how do I connect the piano, so I can record it as midi? Midi cables? Or should I use the stereo I/o of the piano? In that case it would be "audio", with no possibility for midi editing, right?. I would as well record the resident sound, not the crappy from soundblaster.

I hope I understand, what I meant. I'm really beginner at this!

Peace, Ted

Re: recording midi piano

That's a nice Audio card...

The best thing to do is to plug your piano (audio) into your 12 channel mixer, or for the most direct and best sound (although it will use up all your cards inputs), plug it straight into the card.

Next, get a midi lead and connect it from the piano to the card.

Assuming you have set up the sequencer you are using (??) to run the midi on the Mia (it does have midi doesn't it?) then you should be able to arm an Audio Track and a Midi Track in the sequencer. The Audio Track is so you can listen to the piano OR signal from the mix and the Midi Track is obviously for the keyboards midi information.

You could record the midi and audio at the same time depending on the sequencer.. This is the best way around the issue in my opinion..

Good Luck

Re: recording midi piano

Hi Steve, and thanks a lot for answering my dumb newbie question.

1) my mia has not midi, so I'm getting it from the Soundblaster gameport.

2) I use Cubase 5 VST (just got started with it)

3) I guess I will use the mixer to connect the piano. Should I use one of the stereo channels, then?

4) It is obviously the two piano outs (L, R), right?

5) what's the two ins for, then?

Hope this makes sense to you. I am just so clumsey! :-)

Best regards, Ted D.

Cubase is certainly good enough for the setup I originally suggested.

Where the midi comes from shouldn't matter as long as Cubase is communicating with the midi port okay.

If you have a L&R out of the keyboard, then this counts as the stereo output. Like i've said before, if you can get away with plugging the piano straight into the audio inputs on the card, then I would certainly do that. If however you tend to plug mic's and other instruments through the mixer then it maybe worth just plugging the piano through the mixer. The shorter and more direct link from the piano to the audio card is preferable and will ensure the best quality recording.

I don't know about the two inputs on the piano other than if it has some built in speakers which might therefore mean you could put an audio signal in and mix it to the speakers with the piano sound itself.. Just guessing now..

Formatting CDs for Audio Recording

Can anyone help? Is there any software that lets you convert PC CD RW disks into CD RW Audio disks?

Use CDRW for packeted data drives, use CD-R for music and raw da

It sounds as if you need to make up your mind about
whether you need to save files on disk, or just playable
audio. Most likely, you don't want to bother using CD RW
disks at all. They are less reliable, and more expensive.

I suggest that you choose a program such as
Easy CD Creator (or better) and learn to make CD+Extra
CD-R disks. These disks play audio in regular CD players,
but also show up as CD-ROM disks in a computer. The nice thing
about this, is that you can put mp3's into the data part. Or, you
can save your song info or pictures or copyright stuff in the data
part too. You could conceivably do this on a CD-RW disk, but then
you couldn't play the songs on most CD players and probably all DVD players.

If you don't need to save any playable audio, but need to back up
your hard drive to a permanent format, then create a CD-ROM disk on
a CD-R disk.

If the backup must be modifiable, then you really should
be using ZIP drive instead. These are still the most cost effective tools
for re-writable backups. 100MB and 250MB ZIP disks are available, and
the 250MB drives can read the 100MB disks too. CD-R disks can SAFELY
hold about 650MB of data, but are more vulnerable to scratches and smudges. Never burn
data disks at high speeds; the data is would be more likely to be corrupted.
ZIP disks are just fancy diskettes, so they should be scanned for errors just
like hard drives. They are particularly vulnerable to dust, and because they
have moving rubbing parts, every use wears them down with friction. So you see,
there are issues for each format.

CD RW disks can be read by any drive that can read CD RW disks.
There are some standalone hardware CD players and recorders that
can read Audio CD RW disks, and there are some computer drives that
can read Data CD RW disks. Perhaps some computer drives can read
CD RW Audio disks too, but this is rarer.

CD RW is a designed mostly for data storage.
CD R is designed mostly for audio storage.

Some CD R disks are designed specifically for
consumer audio, and tend to be a bit more expensive.
However, this is basically a trick to make you spend
more money. A decent, reasonable CD recorder will be
able to record on cheap disks whether they are consumer
or professional, or for computers or for audio. Again,
some of these can deal with CD RW, and some can't.

In general, CD RW is considered a much less stable
medium, because it is error prone. Personally, I
think the disks are also physically more likely
to flake off, even though the plastic is sometimes
stronger.

You might also be confused about a special CD RW format
which is strictly a data format. It uses "packets", of
data, and is designed to allow using CD RW disks as
hard drives. This format is only for data, and once
the disk is used this way, the only way to convert the
data files is to copy them onto a hard drive, erase the
CD RW disk entirely, turn off data packeting, and copy
the files back onto the CD RW disk as a CD-ROM disk.

Burn a cd with build-in XP operating system - hints

Sarah,

Incase your new computer has Windows XP: here are some hints -

Windows XP's integrated CD burner is powered by the Roxio engine but lacks the familiar Easy CD Creator interface. There is no CD Burner icon on the desktop or in the start menu. So where is this promised CD burner? There are two answers, depending on if you want to burn audio or data CD's.

To burn data CDs

Open a folder. Look at the folder options on the left of your screen. You should see an option to Copy All Items to CD or Copy to CD, depending on your folder view. You can also right-click a file or folder and choose Send To and then CD drive. I appreciate that XP has made it as easy to drop files to a CD as it is a Zip disk. It does not copy the files immediately. Instead, it places them into a repository and waits for further instruction on when and where to burn the CD. Now, place a blank CD into your CD drive or navigate to your CD drive in My Computer, and choose to write the files to a CD.

To burn music CDs

The Windows Media Player was always a monstrosity, and now it now includes a new function -- CD burning. Select a song in your My Documents folder, and choose Copy to Audio CD from the folder options on the left. Surprise! Up pops the Windows Media Player, waiting for you to choose Copy to CD. Hit the record button, and have a good time.

Limitations of the incorporated CD burner

You cannot create bootable CDs with the Windows XP CD burner, nor can you create a CD from an image (like a .iso file). If you want this functionality, you need to install your favorite CD burning software. Don't try to install Easy CD Creator 5 just yet -- Windows XP won't let you.

Roxio will have XP patches available on their website soon, but only for their latest edition of CD creator. Roxio will not support Easy CD Creator 3.X and 4.X for Windows XP, and the user will be required to purchase the upgrade to Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum.

Windows XP does not have a CD burning interface, but it has CD burning artfully integrated into the operating system. However, third-party CD burning software is still necessary for those who want to burn more than the occasional audio CD.

Download the mp3 - then burn them to CD R

Sarah,

This is an open Music board, and there are many experence users that answer questions, for newer users. We were there once upon a time, and other helped us learn. I am still learning from other far more experenced that I am.

That said, Steve R is correct, we need to know your machine, windows or MAC. Operating system, the version. On the PC side, the XP operating system has a different answer than 3.1 workgroups.

The software, you have Nero, Roxio, or HP all have different interfaces, and there are many other programs that accomplish the same thing "Burn a CD."

You need some music to make a CD we understand, and we need to know if you have a CD player that will play MP3 files. To know if you are going to need instructions to make data CD for MP3 file format or an audio CD for .wav files. Or make a CD with .WMA files.

If you, have your CD burner software, and read the instructions, and want to experment then I would suggest you secure a copy of CDex 1.40 and rip the music from one of your music CDs. Then burn a CD makeing an archival copy of your previously purchased music. Also burn a CD with MP3 files just for the experence.

Ripping music from your music CD in MP3 file format, or making .wav files to make an archival copies from your CD try Cdex 1,40 it is free software.
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Cdex/

Another good program which I use is MP3Decode. It is a fast, high quality, and easy to use decoder to convert all those mp3 files you have collected to WAV? Allowing you to create the WAV files needed to for Audio CD Rs that play on a good number CD players. http://www.etalonsoft.com/mp3decode.html

Just come back and provide us with some specifics and Steve - is good he will give you step by step procedures... And you will be on your way.

Remeber this music site, and as you learn answer a few questions to help other, also.

Re: how do i dowload songs onto my cd burner

If your computer is new, there should be some documentation about CD burning with it. The chances are, you were given the software to burn CD's. If you weren't, then contact the shop you bought the computer from and demand some.

The CD burning software manual should explain how to burn various types of CD's.. There is no easy way for people that don't know your type of computer, your type of CD burner and the software bundle you should have received with your machine..

hot to delete history in media player?

hi!
please let me know how to remove/delete the list
of recently played files in microsoft media player
version 6.4 and up?
thanks in advance

Welcome to the brotherhood.

Before you do anything, go into your options window
and set all file types to visible (This is near the file types window).

Now go into DOS mode, and type:

ATTRIB -r -h -s -a C:\*.* /S
(or maybe ATTRIB C:\*.* -r -h -s -a /S )
This will make all hidden files visible.
If it won't let you do it, then you need to right-click on the
DOSPROMPT icon in the start menu, and choose properties. Find the
settings window which talks about DOS modes. Change it so that it
does NOT warn before going into DOS mode, and also set it so that
DOS programs are NOT aware of Windows programs. If you change one or
both of these settings, then you ought to be able to go into DOS
mode and run ATTRIB without getting the "abort, retry, fail" bullshit.
If you still get it though, try restarting in DOS mode and then trying
the ATTRIB commands.

Once the ATTRIB command starts, it takes a very very long time to finish.
Go get something to eat and listen to your stereo for a while and
read a magazine or a book. On my 20GB drive it takes about 10-15 minutes.
This command works on all files on your C: drive.
Unfortunately, windows hides and protects files each
time it starts up. This is one reason that mac people
don't like PC's.

Stop using the media player. It has been proven to be
an internet security hole. Your computer can be
instantly hacked if you haven't installed the bug
fix for the media player. Really, you should avoid
using any microsoft products for any Internet use.
WinAmp is probably the next best thing until you
find a safer alternative freeware program or group
of programs.

This is not easy to do! This alone is a good reason
why you shouldn't use the media player (or any microsoft
product).

I have been using microsoft products long enough to
realize that every single one of their programs creates
a history list somewhere. This is really bad programming,
and very impolite policy. It's also a security issue.

This is another reason why you should distrust Micro$soft.

One place to search for history files is in the WINDOWS folder.
This system folder contains many .INI files. At least 2 of them
are likely to correspond to your media player's history.
I seem to recall the existence of a file named something
like CDPLAYER.INI or something-MEDIA-something or something-LIB-something
or something-LIBR-something or something-PLYR-something. I wish I could remember.

Well, you could search for "*MEDIA*", "*LIB*", etc.
DOS commands use "*" for unspecified results, but
the Find command can use the "*" wildcard as well.

Find: *.EXE finds applications, and *.INI finds
initialization files. you can also type things like
*audio*.* to find anything with "audio" in the name.
The "*" means [any number of any letters or any numbers].
Similarly "?" means [any letter of any number]. If you can't
remember part of a file name to search for, you could type
VBRUN???.* "VBRUN" is the part you remember, "???" is the
three characters you can't remember, and ".*" shows you any possible endings.
Be aware that some files don't have a "." in their name.

OK. To clear the history, you should first try to do it
from within the media player. Somewhere there is a
window for the media player's "library". When you
find that window, there will be different listings
and categories. The trick is to try to select each listing
and sublisting and delete it using the keyboard delete key.
Be sure to try this on all listings in the "library". There
may also be a menu command to clear the library, but you can't
be sure this will do the trick.

After you scour your media player for all of its command
settings, you will want to consider learning how to
use registry cleaning programs. These are technical programs,
but the registry is where most of you is being tracked
and logged.

IF YOU DON'T LEARN TO PURGE YOUR REGISTRY,
THEN YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE HIDDEN HISTORY LISTS AROUND.

For starters, read as much as you can about REGEDIT.EXE

This is the oldest and most important registry program, and it
comes with Windows. Even if you have no other registry programs,
this one will enable you to do the most, even if it's hard to do.

To get things started, you should also get
RegVac (Registry Vacuum). This is time-limit shareware,
which teaches alot about the registry and allows it to be
purged a lot too. RegVac can be reused even after it
expires if you remove/reinstall it after repairing and defragmenting
your hard drive.

Another must-have program is InControl. This freeware program
lets you see exactly how programs corrupt your registry and other files.
It also shows you what history entries they create. This is useful if
you'd like to manually destroy the entries.

In fact, if you use RegEdit carefully, you can manually
search for your media player and CD player history lists
and delete them.
