how to Relate PB to semitones??

Midi pitchbend can be +/- some big number.
So what do the PB numbers mean when it comes to semitones?

If a C is PB=0
then C# is PB=x
then D is PB=y
etc

what are x and y?
Is it always a constant interval?

Does that also mean that B is PB= -x
and A# is PB= -y

thx,
frenchy

Re: how to Relate PB to semitones??

: Midi pitchbend can be +/- some big number.
: So what do the PB numbers mean when it comes to semitones?

That can be complicated.

: If a C is PB=0
: then C# is PB=x
: then D is PB=y
: etc

: what are x and y?

Assuming that your pitchbend range is the GM default of 2 semitones,
x = half of max, y = max value, assuming that 0 is defined as center.
Downward pitch bend on that scale is a negative number, but the same
thing applies -- half of max = half pitchbend range.

Note: this assumes that your synth scales pitch bend linear by
cents (notes). Not all do. If yours doesn't, you'll need to find its
pitch bend curve to figure out the note/frequency.

Most major synth makers for GM compatible synths use the principle
above.

Note that not all programs show the value of the controller the same
way. It is a two byte value, whose binary value (those hex numbers)
is always notated the same way, but the decimal interpretation depends
on how people scale it.

Cakewalk shows it as -8192 to 0 to +8191 (or else it swaps, anyway,
one value is different by 1).

: Is it always a constant interval?

Synth dependent. But on most synths, yes.

Pitch bend range is alterable on some synths. The two semitone
range default can be changed. If you change it to an octave -- a nice
popular range for guitar bends -- then full scale is 12 semitones,
half scale is 6 semitones, and the math in semitones/cents is easy
enough to figure out.

: Does that also mean that B is PB= -x
: and A# is PB= -y

Pretty close. With 0 defined on the scale, the positive and
negative maximums are going to differ by 1 in value. OTOH, max and
minimum from center are more easily defined than the numbers -- people
show the scale differently in different programs.

Re: How can i use fruityloops to make my own music

where do i go on this site to make my own beats.

Re: How can i use fruityloops to make my own music

<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/FruityLoops_win95/">FruityLoops</a> is a great program. I use it more for making loops, but a lot of people use it to write songs. I wouldn't recommend it if you are doing your project at the last minute, because you'll find there are heaps of features you will want to play with. There is also a manual on the <a href="http://www.fruityloops.com">Fruity Site</a> that you can download.

Other than that, a pile of loops and a copy of <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/SonicFoundryAcid/">ACID</a> will definitely be of use to you. Easy to use and fun as well.

Re: How can i use fruityloops to make my own music

If it is for a school project I think the idea would be to research, so you have made a good start by asking here but you will get a better picture if you check things out for yourself. You will find anything you want to know about Fruityloops on their web site @ <a href="http://www.fruityloops.com/">http://www.fruityloops.com/</a>. Fruityloops is great becuase you dont have to be a 'musician' as such, you just need some imagination and a hard drive full of samples and loops (little snippets of sounds).

Re: Sorry::Out Of topic : I wanna buy USED ROLAND XP-10

July 22,2002

I live in Portland, ME, USA. I have a Roland XP-10 in near perfect condition. Bought it about seven years ago, and only used it only briefly as a reference instrument (I'm an acoustic composer) when not near a piano.

Let me know if you're still looking.

My apology for the pop-ups

Not since that day sometime back in 1993 when I set
up a web page with a list of links to a few audio
applications, has one of my later decisions about
this web site been so bad.

We've come along way since then, and many of you
have been on this ride since the start, and I want
to offer you my unreserved apology for deciding to
put so many pop-up advertisements on the Hitsquad
network of web sites.

The reason I set up Hitsquad was because I was
once a struggling musician and back then there were
almost no free resources for musicians. I believed,
and still do, very strongly that those of us who
have chosen an artistic path in life deserved
better - hence my unpaid efforts to create these
free services. (some early work <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/5yo/" target="blank">SMM</a> and <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/monolith/" target="blank">AMM</a>).

As things grew and a real community began to
develop I had to start paying for bigger servers,
more bandwidth, and people to do all the work that
was became impossible for one person.

For a few years that was really easy, stock
markets were going up, dot-com businesses were
becoming worth zillions, and heaps of web sites
were paying for millions of dollars worth of
advertising in a mad land grab for bigger
audiences, using their shareholders money.

Then, after very few of those businesses actually
sold anything other than their own stocks, their
shareholders ran out of money and the companies
and the markets collapsed - that was nearly two
years ago now.

Hitsquad wasn't immune.

Even though I poured my life's savings into
Hitsquad, and the most senior people in the company
went without pay, I had to lay off some of our staff
(including one of my best friends), reduce some
of the free services, and find new ways to pay the
bills.

We found many ways of keeping free musician services
like this site online, including reducing our costs
(I cut my own salary to less than US$6.00 per hour),
introducing premium services such as membership,
and trying new forms of advertisements.

That's where pop-ups came in. We were offered enough
money for the pop-ups that would have paid for all our
server bills.

I decided, that along with several other initiatives,
we would put all those pop-up ads on the site.

That was the wrong thing to do as it made the site
very hard to use and was defeating my original goals
of trying to help other musicians to help themselves
and each other to get at least a little ahead in this
strange vocation we've chosen.

The Hitsquad crew are working very hard on several
other initiatives and we are making excellent
progress - over the coming weeks there will be a
series of exciting announcements on how this free site
will not only continue to be free, but will be better
than ever.

<b>I unreservedly apologize for the excessive pop-ups.</b>
(<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/wwwboard/messages/108517.html">they have been removed</a>)</b>

Thank you kindly for your feedback, and for reminding me
why I, Geoff, Carly, Charles, and Leanne, keep working
on this each day.

Please keep your feedback coming.

Your sincerely,
Jason Horton.

No apolgy necessary

Hi Jason
It's been a while since I have dropped you a line, but I have continued to watch your web-efforts over the time.
No need to apologise for anything ... you have been providing a great service and do whatever you have to do to make that happen, I am sure you are forgiven in advance for anything that isn't quite right.
I have not had success with a few ideas I have tried on my site but unless you have a go, you don't go forward. It just means that you (as well as I) are striving to provide the very best service possible.
You should be showered with bouquets not brickbats.
As "Brodie" (Big Brother) is saying "Water - Bridge - Under - Over".
All the very best mate .... keep going forward!
Yours in music (and web resources)
Narrell Brown
Jaybees

Props

Jason, hearing about your webring's history and innovation was awesome. I also
admire how you came clean with the info on your complex decision-making. You
sound like the kind of person who would be good to work for, regardless of the pay.
I sure wish we lived in a world a bit more accommodating to the peaceful arts and
peaceful sciences. As an american, i don't give a damn about the stock market,
the so-called hunt for osama bin laden, or the latest liar-pop icons. I do care about
the freedoms of music and music technology. Therefore, as a cynic and a technophile,
I hereby pay my serious respects to you, a gracious and generous innovator, creator,
community leader, and internet mastermind. Never mind the pop ups, I'm giving you prop ups.

I have the same problem and haven't a clue what's up. Perhaps some kink of copy protection?

BTW - Upper Case ".MP3" instead of ".mp3" file extensions? Irrelevant, or meaningful ? I try to avoid them. Have you wondered about this, too?

Help :)

I have downloaded Mp3 Wizard, and the two options I need to use from the program...line-in and midi file are grayed out!!! I signed up and registered for a copy of the program but I really don't know why the program isn't running fully. I'm far from a technical wizard so any advice would be great!!!

Re: Help :)

Firstly, it's a demo and is likely to have far fewer functions. But if you've registered, you should have received your regcode or whatever is needed to run the software. I'd just send them an email. You'll find the address at: http://www.demonweb.co.uk/c3sys/register.htm

How do I make Acapella

I came across these instructions:

1. Use a low pass filter and tune the filter so that the cutoff frequency is as high as possible without hearing the vocals. This is your low frequency cutoff. All you will hear is bass.

: 2. Use a highpass filter and tune the cutoff so that all you hear is the highhat and cymabls and no vocals. This is your high frequency cutoff.
: 3. Put the first cutoff frequency you found (low frequency cutoff) into the highpass filter. Put the second cutoff you found into the lowpass filter. You have now made a bandpass filter that is cutting out the bass and the high treble. Shrink it down to taste (ie so that you hear less of the instruments at the same frequency as the vocals).

: 4. Splice the audio so that you cut out all the non-vocal parts. Don't worry about the vocal tails (ie don't worry if the vocals just cut out at the end of vocal phrases), as you will reconstitute them later.

: 5. reconsitute the tails: slap some reverb on the vocal track, and some bpm-synced stereo delay (left side at three quarter notes and right side at 6 quarter notes)

now, which software do I use?

Re: How do I make Acapella

Probably a heavy-duty editor like Sound Forge 6. If my memory serves me correct, you aren't going to get a great result. But you might end up with what you want through trial and error.

What exactly is the studioware panel? I have the VM3100Pro and the RBUS card in my Windows2KPro system using Sonar1.0XL. Also have a Creative Labs SBLive. We should trade information on things. I may have the software you are looking for and will check for it. Email me, perhaps we should have a phone call and exchange our knowledge and/or software. I am having problems getting a clean sound to go from Sonar back To the VM3100Pro.
