Creating Tab and Notation

Hi
I am looking for a way of writing tab and music notation automatically. I currently write tab manually, using a program called Musedit which is very unstable and unpredictable but, when it works, it produces reasonable results - I use this mainly for printing scales, licks etc. for my students.
However, I have a number of guitar arrangements which I would like to publish.

Obviously, using the mouse to enter tab positions is OK up to a point but it doesn't always print the correct note values on the staff and trying to enter tied notes is a pain. It is also extremely time-consuming.

I have also tried a guitar synth plugged into Cakewalk and Sibelius etc. but with very limited success. I have also tried using a midi piano keyboard but my skills at this are zero!

Surely, there must be a way of plugging a guitar into software and producing tab and notation, even if it requires some editing?

Can anyone help, please?
Thanks

Re: Acapella problems

I have found some Time Stretching applications don't get the timing exactly right with a longer passage. Even a little difference can be noticeable after no time at all.

The best solution I can think is that you cut the Acapella into smaller sections and time stretch those. It will take a lot longer but it will give the time stretcher more of a chance to get it right...

Rimmer (SteveR)

Re: Acapella problems

Or you could use <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/SonicFoundryAcid/">ACID</a>. I've found it works for me.

Re: Acapella problems

Nigel and Rimmer couldn't be more right. Take your samples BAR by BAR, and you will have no problem syncing them perfectly within ACID.

You have to go small to get the seamless results you need for vocals.

Read my post about "Remixing for the interested beginner"... (Not to say you don't already know this crap... :)

PLEASE HELP ME...SONG SPLITTER

This is my problem:

I want to take a song and split it into its different components i.e. Voice , Guitars , Bass , Drums , Synth etc.

Does anyone know a cure for this problem. Solutions could include softwares , designs etc.

Reply directly to rahul_mukerji@hotmail.com

Thanx a lot people

Re: PLEASE HELP ME...SONG SPLITTER

If you want an answer, you'll have to read it here.

And the answer is...there isn't anything that will do what you want. Even your brain can't do it, so what chance do you think a computer has? With so many overlapping sounds, there is no way that each part can be separated. The only cure is to find the song in MIDI format, or find the sheet music.

Help me! I'm missing noteheads in Sibelius 3, on screen that is (don't know about print outs). Also when I go to House Style annd Edit Noteheads, there's nothing there!

Sequencing Software

Hi,

I wish to purchase Reason to use on my mac. I currently have Cubase VST. Before I get Reason I wish to know, is their any way I can get to two sequencers to chase one of the other and how would I set it up to do so?

Angello Hector

Re: Sequencing Software

It can be done although I haven't done it myself. Reason can be plugged into Cubase (or other VST compatible equivalent). Reason has a demo to download for OS9 or OSX. It might let you plug it in to see if it works for you.

E-music virgin!

Hi,

I love to write music but have only ever done so in the old fashioned way of tape recorder! I just got an iBook (OSX) and was hoping to start writing tunes/songs with it.

The only program I've seen in action is "Buzzmachines" - It looked impressive (especially as it's free!) but I didn't know if I could record my voice/guitar/keyboard over the software's drums and bass sequencers. Is this the kind of program I should be looking for? Is there a Mac equivalent?

Any help would be much appreciated.

-Dani

Re: E-music virgin!

OSX is on the verge of a musical revolution as some of the main Mac mainstay programs are being converted to work with OSX. Bias's DECK for OSX is out and is a multitracking program. I haven't used it but there is a demo I believe.

Logic Audio (recently bought by Apple for OSX), Cubase SX, Digital Performer 3 (Mac only) will all be available soon.

For audio editing check out Bias's Peak, Spark (ME). For other recording software, check out Abletons Live, Reason for OSX... there are probably others at this stage. I'm still waiting for Logic for OSX myself...

Re: E-music virgin!

Thanks for the quick response, Steve!
I'll check these out.

acd. --> wav. ...??

when you make a song on acid how do you convert it all
into just one wav(or otherwise)file?

Re: acd. --> wav. ...??

You export it to WAV. But only if you have a registered, legal version.

Recording Voice

Does anybody know what software can let me record my voice onto the computer and then burn it to a cd. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Recording Voice

You need an audio editor to record your voice. Then you will need CD Burning software to burn to CD. Start looking <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/">here</a>.

Looking for music (guitar) teaching aids

Hi. I am a guitar instructor. I am looking for a software that can help me with my teaching. Basically what I'm looking for is a program in which I can record an exercise, and then the student records his version of the exercise on a separate track, and then the program shows a percent or degree of accuracy between the two. Is there a program that can do this?
TIA

Ulises

Re: Looking for music (guitar) teaching aids

You could use a multi-track recorder for this. But I don't think there's anything that will give you the 'degree of accuracy'. Good idea for software tho!

Re: Looking for music (guitar) teaching aids

You could use a Midi guitar convertor and then record and observe the note differences in a midi editor. All midi/audio sequencers will do this. Comparing audio, even with the eyes is a strange thing to have to do. I doubt you will find a program for the job other than the midi route. Keep looking..

I don't see how you are planing to teach them anything from the test though. If their timing is out, they would be better off playing along with a metronome or drum machine to tighten it up a little.

Thanks Steve. Actually, is just a matter of showing the student how accurate or innaccurate s/he's playing something. It's a way to telling them "You can't go to the next lesson until the computer says you got at least a 60% of precission" Then they could take the excercise home and practice until the minimum degree is achieved.
Just a thought on how I could improve my teaching by means of taking advantage of technology.

Re: Looking for music (guitar) teaching aids

Check out a program called Music Ace. I think it was a teaching program with real midi input (granted keyboard). I think the science behind real audio versus note position equalling a percentage of accuracy might be asking a little much. The midi guitar with a music teaching program would be my first port of call.

Keep your eyes open though, it could be possible..

radio stream animated

Hi everyone!
I found a fantastic animated radio streamer on the site,

http://www.the-demo.com/c.htm?sub=6&subsub=55

that I put on my home page at

http://snow.prohosting.com/tetetoto/

Now, I'd really like to create my own but I'm missing some documentation about the language. Anybody could help me find some informations?
Thanks a lot.

A Gremlin in my soundfonts…

Please help, I’m dieing here…
For several years now I’ve been writing music with Cakewalk on my Pentium II 500. During which time I’ve an amassed an extensive collection of sound banks for my works. Two weeks ago, old faithful died on me, and I upgraded to an AMD Athlon XP 2000, on an MSI mainboard. At which time I upgraded to windows XP and continued to use my creative live card. I was anxious to get back to my composing, but when I fired up my more resent work, the computer crashed. I tried every possible setting and soundfont, some worked fine, but when others when called upon, the computer crashed. First I thought, it’s the sound card, so I bought a new SB Audigy uninstalled the old SB Live and fired it up. Same thing, some font banks worked fine, others crashed the system. I then proceeded to upgrade from the Cakewalk series to the new Sonar by Cakewalk. Reinstalled WinXP several times, I’m sure its not my hardware or software, but what’s left… I need those fonts, they’re great. Not to mention their part of several pieces that I’ve already completed and sold.
Please help.

Please Name This Song

This song has been out for a while. I first heard it last year. It's an alternative song. Towards the end the guy sings, "you know, you know, you know, save me." He kinda (to me) sounds like the lead from the chili peppers. I'm probably wrong.

Someone must know this song. Someone please help. I've been to many forums, e-mailed DJ's, and no one knows anything. :(

Re: Please Name This Song

If you think it's a RHCP song, try some fan sites.
