Macs Suck

All macs suck, nothing can be said in its defense. I used one for 5 minutes and i found my self hungering to "fix" it with a sledge hammer. The speed is terrible it cant even go 1 Ghz and there are no good games, I work for Compusa and I know what Im talking about i have never seen a good game come out for Mac. Dont even get me started on the RAM or the OS, who gives a damn if it dosent crash as much as windwos 98, just get XP never has crashed for me or anyone I know who uses it. Another reason for how terrible Mac is is the design, who wants a computer with handles on the outsides, i mean its great if your throwing it out of a 5 story window and want to get some distance but thats it. And whats with these new mouces they have 1 button!! Normally that would not be a problem for me but the mac system wont let you plug in a Windows or other type of mouce. God it is terrible if you agree with me I encourage you to make other statements like this on this site. If you like macs and hate me, try to stop me from writing stuff like this I dare you!

Re: Macs Suck

macs are crap if you dont belive me well you probably were dumb enough to go to the store and buy one and if you wont take my opinion then take his instead http://www.redvsblue.com/appleswitch.shtml

The best way I have found to convert .ram files into .wav, is to use Winamp 2.81, along with the Tara Audio Video Plugin.

The plug-in will allow you to play .ram and .rm files. In Winamp's preferences, set the output plug-in to Nullsoft Diskwriter. Confure the Diskwriter plug-in to write to the .wav format somewhere on your hard disk.

Winamp will lock up ocasionally--you may want to restart Winamp ater each conversion.

Re: look upon our works, ye mighty, and despair

I wasn't trying to be offensive. I just was being honest.

My musical taste run far and wide. I work in the music industry and know my country from my dance. It sounded like Trance to me, Chill out, call it what you want, I thought it was average. I am not a great fan of Orbital, I don't buy Chemical Brothers albums but have worked with them a couple of times. I don't much get off on Moby although I think he has a style that stands out.

The big thing about getting yourself a contract with Sony or whoever is unimpressive to me. I know full well what those contracts entail and it generall amounts to signing your life and tunes away to a massive careless money making corporation. I wouldn't consider it at all...

The thing about computer based music is that (like you said) everyone is doing it. If you want to make the grade, image is more important than the music for charting. Dance music is different to some extent in that it's the dancefloor that dictates but that demands that your music really stands out among the crowd (massive crowd). I think the chance of making money in this sick musical commercial world is so tiny, that you really have to have something special to get you there. Moby has it, the Chemicals make some proper dance vibes, and Orbital suit situation music better than most. I don't honestly know where your stuff sits. I wish you well but haven't changed my mind on what I think of it, it's average.. Sorry, just being honest.

Have a listen to Prophesy by Nitin Sawhney. It's an amazing album with many different vibes that make the album stand out. Take what you know and diversify. Albums like that will sell themselves, always. Why? because they are good... not average..

OT. Hollywood coming to a computer near you..

Off topic sorry, but this is important.

I have always been worried about the virtual American film monopoly that is Hollywood. Any company with that level of control on such a mass market is rarely if ever justifiable to anyone.. Turns out the law too.

If this ruling goes through, then Hollywood and the other Media Massive will have free reign to hack your computer and have a good look through what's on your hard disk. Of course they are looking for illegal film and audio material that they might own copyright on. If they find it, they can delete it. It's been mentioned that a home movie named 'Snow White' for instance will be deleted without your consent. Any sueing, must be approved by the US state and then you will have to pay to prove that it has cost your over $250 or you can bugger off.

I find this more than disturbing. There is no doubt that governments the world over have access to your computer through illegal practices, but this is just too much of a human rights issue to be believed.

Most Hollywood offerings are formular crap. Most corporate owned music is crap. Then they get the right to have a look at your computer on the off chance that you are stealing something from them... Totally unbelievable..

Read One.. You owe it to yourself..

Re: OT. Hollywood coming to a computer near you..

Considering the tens of millions of people who access the net on a daily basis, I cannot see how this strategy would be successful or consistent. Big, noticeable traders, would be easy targets - but someone with an old rip of Star Wars might not be.

I think it's part of a scare campaign. It's an old technique to ask for the world but just accept a continent at the haggling stage.

Suffice it to say, if you don't support crazy ideas such as this one, then don't support the film industry. Personally, I hope all this funky technology allows us to see more homegrown and backyard efforts.

Re: OT. Hollywood coming to a computer near you..

Good stuff Kryten. I think it's a shooting themselves in the foot scenario. It's a shame that they have to use those scare tactics. I can't believe the human rights issues haven't been as much in the news as this ridiculous effort.

I like the idea that backyard efforts will become more prevalent. I love listening to people's music on the internet and on occasion, see peoples home movies and creations. This is where it should be at. People getting back to the interaction (with families if nothing else) rather than being spoon fed on Tv pap. Hollywood is too overpowering. Almost all Hollywood movies have the same feel to them, whatever the subject. I'm bored with it now and need a diversion. Maybe i'll watch some french movies for a change.. ;0))

Folk Sounds in the Digital Age

Hey there! Just thought I would post a few thoughts I have about using Acoustic guitars, wood instruments, and other "Natural" sounds. (ugh what a stupid term! What ISN'T natural?!?!!)

First of all, acoustic guitars have a certain quality unatainable to any other instrument. There are milliseconds between the strings when played in a chord. There are many different types of wood used to make them, different sizes ande shapes and also types of strings. Needless to say, it is a VERY flexable instrument, capable of many different tones and styles. If you play the same riff on two different makes of guitar, you will hear that tone quality right away.

That is why it is so important to use different guitars for different purposes. One guitar might be great for a lead track, while a different one will compliment the first so well BECAUSE of these tonal qualities.

For Example...

My guitarist (Joe Balduchhi) plays a Jumbo Guild and it is what I consider to be the Cadilliac of acoustic guitars. I mean this thing just SINGS. Now, when we record this beast for both lead AND backing tracks the sound will blend, and more often than not, become one big sound, even with stereo panning.

To really show off the Guild we will use a different guitar entirely, like my cheap "Dana" classical. That way the sounds never mix over eachother, and the Guild rises above my Dana like a jet over an airport. Lay down 2 or 3 backing guitar tracks and the thick sound will STILL never meet the featured guitar.

NOW...

As far as the digital application of all of this, here is a few things to consider. With the importance of different tonal qualities emphasized (or OVER emphasized, like in this article!) you should consider doing things that most Engineers will NEVER do. Take a backing track at the LOWEST sampling rate. If you want an acoustic guitar to sound like the devil himself, take 10 backing tracks at the LOWEST sampling rate. Pan them, and layer them. THEN place a couple of great, clean (high sampling rate) over them. The result will be interesting to play with, and as far as dirty metal sound goes, well, call me Oskar the Grouch! Or use the same guitar for both tracks, but buy totally different strings for each purpose. Or just use really OLD strings for the backing track, and really NEW strings for the lead part. How about slapping a PZM mic on the back of the guitar for one take, and pointing a SHURE beta at the hole for the other? How about trying ANYTHING UNCONVENTIONAL...?

I generally prefer to hold onto the incredible wood sound of acoustic guitars in my remixes. I love the contrast between 303s, 808s and 909s with a great acoustic line. We hear this in many songs, like that hit (puke) Madonna had just a while back.

My biggest problem with acoustic guitar samples is that there is rarely any change. The loop just rolls and rolls leaving the vocals and drums to do the work. This SUCKS. IF you are using an acoustic guitar as a sample PLEASE take many passes, with many slightly different approaches to the riff. That way, it will change up, even just slightly, and become a much more interesting part of the song like how a live acoustic player is much more interesting than a 2 bar loop. A REAL PLAYER LOVES TO TWEAK DIFFERENT NOTES AND RHYTHMS, and it should sound as such.

Although I refered to the acoustic guitar throughout this shpeal, it applies equally to all "woodish" instruments and vocals too!

REMEMBER, POP RADIO SOUNDS LIKE CRAP BECAUSE IT REFUSES TO BREAK THE RULES. YOU CAN'T CHANGE POP RADIO. YOU **CAN** BE FREE OF THE INDUSTRY STANDARDS!!! DON'T BE A FREAKING PHOTOCOPY!

Love ya! Have fun! Replies are welcome!
Don't forget to check my band MELODICY, and also check our new Production company SPHERICAL PRODUCTIONS too!

Re: Folk Sounds in the Digital Age

I had this conversation with a guy that I am recording at the moment. He did a tune with 5 or 6 (can't remember off hand) guitars at the same time, same guitar. Nice guitar but the same. He is left handed and couldn't play my APX- 4A. The sound doesn't seperate well.

There are two ways to look at this.

1. Use different mic's, Different mic's have different tonal qualities.
2. Process the guitars and use subtractive Eq'ing to seperate.

I agree with what you are saying although I doubt that just changing the guitar is the only route. It's favourite but many don't have different guitars.

Also, some guitar parts that sound like one are often two guitars that have been recorded playing the same tune at different intervals. This works best with the same guitar.

I recommend an AKG451 on an acoustic guitar. I don't know about a Beta on an acoustic as a recommended choice.

Regards

Rimmer

Re: Folk Sounds in the Digital Age

You're right, a Beta isn't the best choice for an acoustic, but you never know until you try itm, and plug-ins and filters can really help with a mic that doesn't quite give you the edge you're looking for.

The AKG451 is GREAT for acoustic sound for sure! I used that one for a demo just a little while ago. Really crisp.

Internet and E-mail filter.

I ask to all programmer out there.

Could you write a program that collects in a main server a black list of WEB sites so that my PC automatically refuses mails or unwanted pop-up windows?

This utility simply asks a central server on the net if a particular WEB address or an e-mail is in the black list. If it's so it locks the request at socket level and does not download it.
And any one can insert a new web site in the list?

What do you think abaut this Utility?

See you.
