This IS frustrating, isn't it? JPEG Hide and Seek, isn't exactl

Well, if you have a PC, then just rename the audio files so that they all end in ".JPG" or ".GIF" or whatever format your server accepts. After they are uploaded, then if you can rename them back to ".WAV" or ".AIF" or ".WMA" or ".OGG" or whatever, then do it. I guess the Mac way of doing it wouldn't be so different either, although one would probably want to keep the type/creator codes as normal or change them to "????" if the server is a Mac server, and then barfs them back at you. If you don't know what I mean by changing mac file type/creator codes, then don't worry about it--it's a technical nerdy thing.

The other thing you could do is to email people your audio files. Just be sure to compress them before you mail them if they are not already in MP3, WMA, OGG, or other MPEG format.

Maybe you'll find anther web site that will let you store audio files?
This kind of problem is very common. Personally, I am mad at websites that let you upload tons of pictures, but not sounds or archives. As long as they control the maximum size of the account, why should they care what format the files are in????!!? Many of these websites are really dumb about that. I'm with you on that one.

Well, for really, really, small sound files (I mean really tiny)... you could store them as Base64 or UU-encoded files and paste them onto the end of any TEXT files on your site. That's how it used to be done in USENET. Base64 is an emailable-file storage format.

I reccomend a free program called Audacity. It lets you split tracks as well as many other things.

Go to the save button. choose export mix. type the mix name. change the file name from .mix to .wav . You can download free .wav to .mp3 converters on the net. just search for: "wav to mp3" and you will find it. Then install it and convert your .wav file you exported.

looking for Macintosh mp3 player

Hi,

i'm looking for a freeware Apple mp3 player containing an 'auto-quit' function, that is, quitting the program automatically after having played the last song. Do you know something? Thanks,
Grabbe

Re: looking for Macintosh mp3 player

I just read somewhere that MACAST (? I think that's what it's called) has an auto quit function, and can even auto shut down your computer too. It's an mp3 player, of course. I can't remember if it's freeware or not.

Re: looking for Macintosh mp3 player

You have to pay for it.

http://www.macast.com/download.shtml

You came to the right place

The recent version of SoundApp can do that if you have at least QuickTime 2.5 installed. Older versions of SoundApp couldn't play mp3's but could play some kinds of MPEG audio. The nice thing about the recent version is that it can do so many differnent kinds of conversions and has a nice playback playlist function too. It can also play .MOD files and .WAV files and Sound Designer files. One nice trick I discovered is that if you change the filetype of a file to "AudT", SoundApp will try to play it as a raw CD audio file. This is useful if you get corrupted AIFF's or WAVE's. After you download SoundApp, take some time to go over the preference settings with Balloon Help turned on. Also, be sure to read the built-in help. There's a lot of good info in there about differences between sound formats.

Re: You came to the right place

Thanx for your suggestion. Unfortunately I still have difficulties to get the application quit. I have Quick Time 5.0.1 installed and i can run SoundApp
. The problem is, when I enable 'auto quit when done' under 'preferences', nothing happens. The program keeps running after the last song. The help function does not provide me with anything useful. Do u know if there is something more i have do do before it works??

Grabbe

Hmmm

I'm puzzled that SoundApp hasn't been working for you. I've had it work on a variety of system versions and configurations.

I'll bet the error has to do with QuickTime 5.0.1. Sometimes the versions of QuickTime installed are really more complex than the OS can handle. Since QuickTime handles some of the SoundApp processing, SoundApp is probably waiting for QuickTime services to end or something.

I can't remember if these have a quit function, but you could try
<b>The Musician</b>, and <b>Audioactive</b>. Audioactive comes with SoundEdit 16, but The Musician is around on the web.

I guess you could try SndSampler or something like that, but that's getting a bit less efficient and requires registration.

Well, before you give up on SoundApp, make sure you've given it enough RAM in the Finder, from the "Get Info..." menu item. I usually set mine to something extraordinarily high like 128MB, or so, since sound files can be so big. This may or may not help, depending upon whether or not you use Virtual Memory or not. Another thing to try, is to make sure the SoundApp preferences don't open up or use a playlist on startup. I think that might interfere with the Auto-Quit function, since the playlist is kind of like a brand new unsaved document. It won't quit because it's waiting for you to save the new playlist. If you turn off the auto-playlist function, then hopefully SoundApp will auto-quit.

If none of this helps, you might try...

Re: Hmmm

Thanks very much for your extraordinary effort to help me. I will try your suggestions and come back later.

best, grabbe

Re: Hmmm

i found an answer: if you convert the mp3 file format into e.g. "AIFF" or "system sound" then the auto quit function works. No idea why. The files get very huge by this, but for my own purpose (change automatically to another interface-program) this is not a big problem. You might be interesting in my solution since you invested some time to help me. Thanks again for that.

Reward for product!! *programers needed if I cant find it*

$50 reward if you can find this product!

Im looking everywhere for a software .wav player that will allow me to play 8 .wav files simultaneously and in-sync.

Not only that, I need each channel to be able to be output, through asio device driver, to 8 different channels of output.

Also, I need a master volume control to control all 8 outputs.(individual channel volume, mute and solo controls are needed as well)

I do not need any panning, effects, editing etc...strictly playback, not even eq.

**Programmers*
If anyone is interested in writing this program I will pay for it.

Please reply to my mail kindynasty@hotmail.com

I think this is it

Translation:

Multitrack program and sound drivers compatible with ADAT digital audio.
Also, ADAT-compatible routing/monitoring hardware direct output grouping.

Hey, you should try "Live" from M-Audio (MIDIMAN). Their drivers can do lots of routing, the Live software seem capable of what you request, and I know they have some sound interface hardware that is multichannel-capable. You might not even need the ADAT protocol.

Keep the 50 dollars. Go buy yourself 2 large family pizzas.

Why don't you guys take down no good links ?

It's a waste of time and space and not only that it's frustrating to try downloading programs that has been down for years off of this site for instance Hotstepper 1.0003 , i emailed them in many languages and never got a reply, i have registerd the product a long time ago and lost the information and everytime my hopes get up when i see it in this sites program downloads.
so after this will it still be listed as a valid link or will you guys play on with this game in hopes that it become active again ?

Re: Why don't you guys take down no good links ?

I know what you mean. But some unsupported software can still be used to effect, even if you can't register it. I don't think any one is playing games with you tho'.

Audio industry state of:!!!

Apologies to all effected/inflicted if this be the wrong arena...... for thought

I've had problems securing info from vendors concering up coming products. It's bad enough being kept in the dark with no info on audio specs or being inundated with a blast of useless meaningless data and stuff... have you seen the speakers they rate at 880 watts for $9.95 a pair.... SHYSTERS!!! Charlatans!!

Where's the audio support for dts-es. Dolby 6.1 ex is just matrixed channels to create the rear center, why not bolster the discrete channel purveyor since it is real and unique info coming from the speaker. I can only find 3 cards, Maya (AudioTrak), Fortissimo III (Guillemot), and the Audigy II (CreativeLabs).

If they want to boast support of quality initiatives show me a card vendor that's even working on the THX Ultra2 standard support.

Can someone put the z-560 vs Klipsch debate in better perspective. There are the name brand loyalty addicts that are certain the Klipsch has a much better crisp sound, others are blown away by the base from Logitech.

Speaking of which why can't Logitech tell me after repeated calls when that 5.1 speaker set is coming out? I'll have picked up my 2nd set of z-560's by then for a THXU2 setup by then.

The market may be a crazy place but I'm tired of uncooperative vendors expecting my doe for nothing.

I say "UPGRADE THIS" I'm waiting for what I want and at a price I expect, there's enough of these poodlefaking panderers to make a road big enough to drive on once their corporate bodies begin to fall.

What about the "monopoly" that Sony seems to have? They decide on an encoding standard for CD's etc and then have the means of production to swampt the market with only their cd's.

It's the intentions and spirit that violates.... are we responsible enough to pick up on this vendor abuse and seek verbal retribution as well as logical and financial compensation?

baaaaaa baaaaa (Black Sheep)
Pappy

Re: Audio industry state of:!!!

yeah I got to thinking and not writing properly..

of those 3 cards I mentioned Fort3, Maya7 and Audigy2, exactly none of them support dts-es just the ex standard.

I've emailed them with the same note that was intended for Creativelabs expceting state of the art, or industry leading r&d.

MSRP is always 50% higher than it should be if they want us to b

Well, interesting ideas, i suppose. I don't know so much about current surround techniques, though. I had been dying to get into surround sound engineering until I took the time to listen to more surround systems. Actually, after that I realised that I like plain stereo better. I mean, for movies, surround sound can be good if it's done right, but much of the time even then it's a distraction.

To me, the main problem with stereophonic sound reproduction is that our ears are basically 180 degrees out of phase, but recordings are mainly in phase. I have enjoyed listening to and recording some <b>binaural</b> recordings. To my ears, binaural recordings sound better than anything else. Even without headphones, they sound more natural in terms of imaging. Still, binaural recording is so esoteric, and technical nobody much gets into it. Furthermore, last summer I experimented with creating and monitoring recordings using speakers on each side of my head, at 180 degrees--totally out of phase. Well, this is technically a no-no according to the AES or JASA or whomever, but I found that it sounds much more natural that way, and my recordings turned out just fine, even when played back on normal speaker set ups. In other words, I think that speaker placement and angle, and recording phase issues have much more to do with spatial sound than just adding more speakers and stuff. A properly recorded (or processed) audio piece will always sound spatial, clear and interesting if care is given from the get go, and if it's played back under reasonable circumstances.

You could blame manufacturers for breaking their word, but I seem them as perhaps being a bit more sensible given that most of the human race listens to stereo, not surround sound. I'm not saying that surround can't sound good, it can sound awesome. But to me, it sounds best on sports and some live documentary or drama pieces (if they used the right mics and configurations).

Stereo hasn't yet been perfected, so it will be a while before surround is perfected. Especially since DVD-Audio didn't get anywhere, and neither did DSD or minidisc or DCC. If I had my way, we'd all be using smaller, editable, multichannel-capable, enclosed minidiscs recording at 96kHz 32bits utilizing lossless Meridian Lossless Packing to save space. But Sony has no clue about marketing their hardware, no matter how well they market their artists or magazines. Everytime I see a Sony add for their hardware I notice how alien and irrelevant they seem. Probably their ads are all created in Japan and don't translate well to English-speaking countries. Of course Sony gave us SCMS. I've never heard of anyone ever wanting to thank them for this "standard" which just caused bullshit troubles for everyone with digital gear.

As far as soundcards go, I'd look forward to when MIDIMAN (M-Audio) start supporting multichannel. Of course, some of the trouble is that DTS and THX and AC3 are all trademarked. No one want's to pay license fees, so development suffers. Personally, I think trademarking of inventions should be illegal and abolished because it impedes technological process in favor of rich companies like Microsoft.

I generally agree with your sentiments, though. I don't think many audio companies do much research on what audiophiles actually want. Well, I think Roland and Behringer do, but that's about it. And Roland and Behringer both seem to be doing quite fine these days. Maybe we'll see some multichannel products come from them?

By the way, you might like to use software from Minnetonka. It's called SurCode. It allows you to put DTS 5.1 or 2.1 on regular CD. The tracks are playable on many DVD players and on CD players with digital outputs to DTS decoding recievers. Maybe you'll like it. It's probably cheaper than full DVD authoring, especially if you don't feel like creating video tracks. DVD, is, after all, a video format, not an audio one.

Well, I've shared my piece. Not much to conclude.

Re: MSRP is always 50% higher than it should be if they want us

Apologies, it's Monday morning and it seems there's never enough coffee and tea ....

Thanks for your well written and thought out note. I have a lot of 'looking up' (investigating and learning) to do that I'll try and start today.

Re: Sound Phase

Phase refers to the off-set peak to peak of two sound waves when they intersect, or are otherwise absorbed.
180 degrees out of phase means one sound is compressing the same amount of air as the other sound is expanding it resulting in silence.
The angle is not a direction that the speaker, mic, or ear is pointing.
When you play two speakers at each other there are "dead" spots where the sound cancels out at different frequencies.
The human ear only perceives sound 180 degrees out of phase if the sound is coming from the side, and it is at just the right frequency.

Just a note. Gecko

Technobabble or Technobabytalk? You be the judge!!

Gecko, sir...

I don't understand the first part of your explanation, ("off-set"?... absorbtion... ok, huh?) and the notion that people cannot hear 180 degree out of phase sound is ridiculous. Put a human head inbetween to speakers facing each other (ie, 180 degrees apart)--that human head, unless it is dead will hear the sounds at each ear. Even a dead head (Kai) could hear those two speaker sources.

Furthermore, we live in an imperfect world of imperfect signal chains and imperfect acoustics. The odds of actually encountereing perfect polarity, amplitude, phase, and angle all at the same time are amazingly small. Besides, even if you're thinking in terms of compressed air, there are always exceptions. Not all airwaves are strictly compression waves. Torsional waves could be considered compression waves moving in three dimensions, whereas compression waves by definition are typically studied in only 2 dimensions.

Last but not least, "angle" as I referred to it, WAS referring to directions of speakers, ears, and microphones. Maybe you preferred me to say to angle with respect to on axis blah blah blah. I was not referring to radians or sinewaves or cosinewaves or longitude or latitude or anything like that.

Maybe you should post a diagram of what you mean. There are plenty of resources online describing this kind of thing.

isolating vocals

does anyone know of any software out there that can isolate the vocals of a track for a remix?

Lp's to CD-Rs

What is the best way to record LP's,45's to CD-Rs that can be played on any standard CD player for audio.

WHat software is used, and is any freeware available for that usage.

Thanks
Mark

Re: Lp's to CD-Rs

Plug the record player into your amp's Phono input. Take a tape out and plug that into your Soundcard/Audio card.

What software you use depends on your platform. I use a Mac so I am not going to recommend shareware/freeware Windows software.

Take a look at some of the software on this sites file area.. It's all quite self explanatory.
