Re: Converting real audio to .sd2 on Mac

I don't think you can. The best thing to do is to route the audio output from the computer to a recording device like a DAT or MD and then sample it back in again. There was a program that does this by routing the Mac audio around and back on itself but I think it had some issues. I can't remember what it was called anyway...

In the future and if you have the choice, keep away from proprietory file formats like RA and WMA and record using Mp3 or MPEG4 AAC (by far the best compression) or better still, no compression at all using .Wav or .Aif...

Reason & other components hook-ups

Hey people! I just got into Reason, and am starting to get fustrated! I have the following: MPC 2000xl, VS890 Hard disk recorder, PC with Reason & Logic, Keyboard with midi in/out, turntables, midiman 4x4 interface, and usb in/out audio card. I use my closet as the booth, and want to be able to cut & paste vocals into either software, but I haven't the slightest clue! Please help! I'm talented otherwise ;)

Re: Reason & other components hook-ups

You question is unclear. What are you recording your vocals into, the Vs890?

I wouldn't use a closet for vocal recording unless it was massive. If you are recording acoustics at home, you are better swamping the biggest room you have with soft furnishings and blankets and then keeping as far away from the walls as you can, namely... the center of the room.

Cutting and pasting vocals or any audio in Logic audio is easy. It's a pricey program.. I would read up in the manual on how it's done...

Rimmer

Re: Reason & other components hook-ups

well, the vocals have been done from the padded closet into the vs890, but that comes with logic already! i just want to be able to use my computer with ALL of my other components in some way...am i still being too foggy?

Re: GEM WK3

How do you know it turns on? do any lights come on to tell you it's on?

If so and the LCD isn't working, then something must have been banged and come loose. Sounds like a trip to the doctors for it then..

Re: MAking Beats With Fruity Loops

ok If u even read this forum ne more, here r some tips how to make a rap beat.
1st open the hip hop folder drag out some kicks(try 2 that sound similiar and put them together for a louder kick and sometime a rawer sound)get ur snares hi hats whatever. I recomend placing a snare every 1st red rectangle on the sample board(which is the 5th rectangle, then count up to 8 rectangles after that snare and put another one.)ur kicks should be in between the snares and so shold ur hi hats. This is how i set up a basic loop. Their r many other ways to make a rap beat just be creative. Ask me if u want more tips on whatever. My AOL name is EvanFo

think of the beat before you try to do it on fruitloops. You can even record the beat you are doing with your mouth on a tape and then match it up with the beat you are trying to produce on fruit loops. as you are developing the beat keep a rythm in your head and stay on that rythm

I make beats with my tongue!!

Hey,
I replicate beats amazingly with my tongue and palates, having my mouth closed. I have been doing this since I was small, but now it itches like its a treasure I could use to entertain. What do you think?

Re: MAking Beats With Fruity Loops

It may be cool to slaughter your English vocabulary and verb conjugation for "rap" music, but punctuation?
Rap is all about rhythm. Don't you think you should keep the rhythm generating elements in your text?

Read up on some music theory.

Before you go slandering someone because they can't spell, why don't you read up on the question and provide some valid feedback. You obviously don't even know what you are doing yourself as you can't provide any useful information...

new to the game

hey everybody, i need some advice on purchasing some music software and equipment. as it stand now, i'm torn between a digidesign pro tools system and an emagic logic system. i've got my eye on the new digi002 with pro tools LE, which seems really nice because it basically comes with everything i would need at the moment, including an impressive array of bundled plug-ins and extra software. but emagic is looking better and better, one of the reasons for this being that apple has pretty much put its faith into the program by buying the company. i plan on buying a new tibook in january, or whenever the updated ones become available, and so my question now is where do i put my faith and money (beyond the purchase of the computer, i mean)? i like the digi002 system, but would i be better off buying logic with an emagic control board? where do the different companies stand as far as plug-in availability? i know that pro tools has a large following of plug-in developers, but i dont know much about logic. i realize that both programs can do basically the same stuff and it's mostly a matter of preference either way, but the fact remains that protools has been something of an industry standard for a while (unless i'm mistaken in that area). and of course money is something of an issue. the digi002 is nearly 2500, while i'm not sure how much a logic system would run simply because they dont seem to have any kind of all-in-one type deal that digidesign has. i noticed that emagic and digi are doing some collaborations with software and hardware, but that only looks to be with the higher end stuff, which i'm not sure i can handle right now. i am a college student in his 3rd year, so that might help put my economic status into perspective. as far as other equipment goes i have a yamaha synth with midi, so that's another factor, but i'm pretty sure midi capabilities would be almost the same with either program. and i am aware that pro tools for os x will be available sometime around january, so osx compatability shouldn't be a problem.
any advice that yall can give me will be greaty appreciated. as it says in the title i'm new to the digital music production game. thanks a lot.

Not an uncommon concern...

I must confess, although I am a Mac user and a lover of Logic Audio, I have drooled over the 002 system. There are some short falls for me however. I am from the old school of massive inline mixing consoles and have always enjoyed playing octopus during mixdown. Although I love the automation of a digital system, I find the amount of inputs and outputs you can acheive for a price with computer systems lacklustre. For me, recording a whole band at one time including a fully mic'ed drum kit demands a lot of tracks and audio inputs, mic preamps etc... However much I want to like the 002 system, I don't feel it was designed for that purpose. Without checking the spec's, I am under the impression that it has 8 analogue inputs, an SP/DIF in and out and an ADAT in and out... soooo... large band and 002 don't mix. You could buy an ADAT breakout box to give eight more ins and outs but to keep the quality of the convertors high, you would probably have to be looking at the Swissonic A/D convertor

http://www.swissonic.com/products/ad24.html

which will add a reasonable sum to your costs. Add some decent mic preamps and your solution is getting further and further away from the attractive 002 price.

Add to this that ProTools LE isn't a great midi platform although it does do it. How much midi you do and how many inputs and outputs you need should be considered when considering the 002. The rest of the system is droolworthy... :)

Logic audio is more an Audio/Midi facility. The newest version is for OSX as well as OS9 and like you have mentioned is now an Apple company. For Apple users, this is naturally a bit of good news as Apple has a reputation for pride in their software. I can only think that the application will become more and more Mac like and more and more OSX like which is a great thing. I have no comments to make on the Mackie Logic Control but I suspect it's quite an interface to use alongside a TiBook. As far as I know (I should really read up) the control surface is a control surface only and not an audio interface as such. If this is truely the case, then the 002 and Logic control are different beasts. Add then the cost of a decent firewire or PCMCIA interface (MOTU 896 for instance) to the overall cost...

Best of luck

Rimmer

Re: Not an uncommon concern...

Have used digi002 for 4 days now. The more I use it the more limitations I discover. Trust me, Pro tools LE is a piece of total crap. I cant believe I spent all that money on something that doesnt even allow you to audition tracks at the same time as playing them. Cubase or Logic are the way to go. Protools LE is a scam.

Re: Not an uncommon concern...

How do you mean, audition the tracks as you play them? I am sure you can listen to what you play as you play it.. It would be ridiculous if you couldn't. Even the most basic audio interfaces allow that.
