Uninstall Napster for Mac

does anyone with a mac know how to uninstall napster?

How to be sure you got rid of something...

Any installer program is bad news. You never know what got put where why and how. However, these tools should help you:
Yank (freeware) This will let you search for more files than your uninstaller. Good for cleaning up preferences too.
FindText (shareware) / or Norton Disk Editor These will let you search all of your drives for any files containing text you specify.
To get rid of software, enter any words that will most likely turn up only in the software you wish to remove.
For example, "Napster", "http://", "ftp://", stuff like that. After you find the results, copy down the names of the files. When you find them, look at their icons on the desktop and do "Get Info" on them to get more info about the version.
Often, in the Get Info window, the version information says what program installed it.
Another tool is to check the package information using the Extension Manager. The Ext Manager sometimes tells more about files than the files do by themselves.
This doesn't always work though. If you have ResEdit (freeware from Apple) then you can open up any suspicious file and read the TEXT, DATA, VERS, PICT, MENU, STR#, and DLOG resources. These are the raw internal parts of programs and files. ResEdit shows the stuff that is invisible to most users.
Some of these resources will show immediately what they are dealing with and who created them.
Last but not least, use Find/Sherlock to locate simpletext files which are often logs of installations. No matter what you do, ALWAYS CHECK YOUR SYSTEM FOLDER MANUALLY FOR ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS. IF YOU DON'T REMOVE THE BAD STUFF, IT'S JUST LIKE HAVING A VIRUS. watch out for shared library files, extensions, control panels, and anything that ends with "Lib". Here are some type codes to help you search: 'shlb' shared library, 'ttro' read only Simpletext file, 'TEXT' text file or log, 'PREF' or 'pref' common preference file, '????' untyped (probably somewhat dubious) file. Creator codes: 'SITx' StuffIt Expander, 'ttxt' Simpletext, 'MOSS' Netscape, 'MSIE' Microsoft Explorer, 'SCPL' SoundApp, 'iCAB' iCab Web Browser (GREAT!!!). To see other type codes, get DropAttribute and/or SetIt'sType. SetIt'sType is totally free and is extremely useful. DropAttribute is more powerful and a bit more stable. Remember, you can enter in type/creator codes in Sherlock. Good luck.

Re: Uninstall Napster for Mac

I was not under the impression that it installed anything but a folder's worth of files. Just drag the Napster folder to the trash and delete.

If you want to make sure, you will need the original installer and a program called "Installer Observer" (at this time, Os9 and previous only). Run installer observer, install Napster again, run installer observer again and see what changes have been made. The program lets you delete any files installed by any program, including hidden files.

networking software

Hi,

Is it possible to network music software? i.e. have the software server based or must it be installed upon every machine?

Re: networking software

This <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/cgi/htdig/htsearch.cgi?method=and&format=builtin-long&config=htdig&restrict=%2Fsmm%2Fprograms%2F&exclude=&words=LAN">search query</a> might answer your question.

Steinberg Voice Machine

Does anyone out there have the Steinberg Voice Machine software? If they do, could they tell me if it will allow me to change the pitch of my voice. I want to deepen my voice but still make it sound natural. I am NOT looking for chipmunk ot robot-like effects. Could I use this software primarily for voice changing (as this is all I need it for) or is it more geared towards harmonizing? Are there any demo versions available of this software?

Re: Steinberg Voice Machine

I couldn't find it on the Steinberg site.

software is designed to infect your system and modify it. software is designed to keep you in the dark while spooling loads of profile information to massively cross-referenced databases.

if you haven't yet, take some time to research face recognition online. it won't be long until there is an extensive database (legal or illegal) about every known living human face on the planet. it means that every advertiser and scam artist with a computer system will know who you are, where you live, how you live, and what you do, 24 hours a day, or at least all the time you choose to go out in public and spend money. OK. that's futuristic, but not too futuristic if you take the time to look.

back to the music. just why are you here? what do you seek to gain from this site and any site? do you want to be smarter? more popular? ahead of the curve? yer just a collector? you want to piggyback on another's fame? you want to get famous? what's it all about? well, you'd better start thinking.

this world is very sick. and some of it is certainly represented on the net.
i've had some peculiar run ins online with legal and illegal types. naughty and nice types. sane and crazies. totally exploitative, and a few generous types. I think i've had chatroom conversations with criminals of the worst kind on numerous occasions. Maybe they're just pretending. What a thing to pretend!!

Try to find a free email service that doesn't fake you out just to get your personal information. i don't think they exist. they are all out for something sooner or later. maybe they just want to track your online behaviour for a few years to get to know you rEALLY REALLY WELL. then, they can really dig into your habits/finances/privacy. Maybe after they know you so well it will be a cakewalk just to lift your credit card numbers off you. Maybe it already is?

Meanwhile, some other types find their way to my ISP, my email, my favorite sites, my hard drive. They snoop around, make snide comments and veiled references. they joke around with my privacy and yours. They are witness to the presence of filth and hostility on the net and they do nothing. I'm talking about the weird hacker types who hack and monitor for a living, and have serious IP tracing tools at their disposal at the push of a button. There are some folks online who have dabbled with satellite signals and phone lines. I'm talking about the Big Brother who is watching you, but who doesn't really care what you do, unless you get really dangerous. Even then, who knows? I've heard some really really sick and sadistic stuff online. References to torture and murder. Meanwhile, the FBI or NSA or whomever should be tracking and profiling, they sit on their hands. Where are they? There are people who admit to being child molesters and so forth. Why aren't these sick people apprehended? The same for neo-nazi types.

You could say, "oh, it's just the internet". but is it? Maybe they are serious?
maybe somebody who claims online to be a freak, really is a freak? I'm complaining because I have lost my faith in the powers of good versus the powers of evil as manifested online. not that i actually believe in such abosolutes, but you know what i mean. maybe you don't. try.

the people who should be the most open are the most secretive, and those who risk all in secrecy are often the most giving. the internet is the FLIPSIDE.
I will lay my cards out on the table.

I am a harmless young slacker type living in the u.s. i am a pascifist, and a very socially accommodating person. i respect all types of people. i pretend to be a little wackier than i truly am. it's all in good fun. but i don't know what's going on anymore with a lot of the online types i've met over the last few months or years. there are people just thriving on the desire to do wrong. whether it is the desire to steal artwork or the desire to have some marriage-wrecking affair. it's weird.

there are Stalkers. Yes, they do exist.

Give up your faith in this madness while you have a chance to mold your own leisure addictions.

1) How much time do you waste trying to obtain merely working software?
2) How much time do you waste giving away personal details about your life so that you hopefully have access to a better online experience?
3) How much email do you get that is'nt utter crap, or that has moral, cultural, or educational value?
4) How often do you run across something really offensive online?
5) Have you ever crossed paths with someone dispicable online? (CHAT? IRC? EMAIL? FORUMS? GUESTBOOK?)

6) Have you ever received annoying postal mail for your online persona?
7) In an ideal world, how would the internet be used?
8) Are you an idealist?
9) How long do you think it took for your favorite piece of software to be created?
10) How long do you think it took for your favorite piece of software to become obsolete or exploited?

11) Do computers truly make the world a better place?

12) Who actually runs the internet ?

13) Why would somebody wan't to hack a corporate website?

14) How many albums do you buy are of performers versus musicians?
(do they just yell and dance and act pretty or do they compose, edit, mix, arrange, play instruments, tune instruments, build instruments, repair instruments) Most people on MTV are actors, not musicians.

Somebody tell me what instrument Kid Rock plays. If he does actually play one, maybe harmonica, tell me that's why you bought his album. NOT.

Wake up and realize that the music industry is constantly preying upon African-American culture. They portray black people as pimps, pushers, thieves, prostitutes and gangsters. What's up with that? And why is every vanilla ice white person who copies that getting madd money for emmulating that bullshit?????????????

Run DMC mixed guitars and raps long long ago, and it didn't take Aerosmith to give them the idea.

Urban Dance Squad was way ahead of Rage Against the Machine.
Rage Against the Machine was way ahead of Limp Bizkit and Korn.

How many young neo nazis and pretty boys and nosejobs does it take to exploit the black urban roots of all popular music?

What's my point? EXPLOITATION AND ZERO RESPONSIBILITY.

This is a sick culture we live in. See the early symptoms now, it's only getting worse. Remember what I tell you now. Remember it 5 years from now when you are looking upon whatever the internet and pop society has become. remember how you were an innocent part of it all. and remember how you were a guilty part of it all.

When I say "internet", maybe i confuse you. i refer also to this "information age". It is really a DISINFORMATION AGE.

LOOK FOR THE LIES. but dont turn away from the truth.

devils will tell you truths online, and angels will tell you lies online.

I'm bailing out of this crap. I've tried to dig into it all, over and over again.
I like to come at it all from different angles. I want to appreciate the riches of the computer age in all its forms. BUT I SEE NOTHING BUT DEVASTATION. I SEE THE SAME DEVASTATION AS IN THE REAL WORLD, only watered down, and categorized neatly.

If any of this makes sense to you, whether you believe it or not, it's up to you whether or not you choose to put it into a song or onto a billboard, or into a letter, or into your subconcious.

Consider schleierenkraft/macintor... to be a VST/DirectX plug-in module for your MIND. I want you to question what I am saying. i want you to question everything you read or download or subsribe to online.

NEVER GIVE AWAY YOUR HOME ADDRESS ONLINE. too many people already have it without your permission.

I do not plan on filling in all of the strange gaps and so forth in this post. I don't plan on trying to answer questions or be clearer than this. This is a classic "hear me now, believe me later" kind of Hanz and Franz statement.

This message is part of a continuum of my messages. Those who have been kind enough to follow my posts, realize the flavour of my mindset and beliefs.
If you want to dig a little deeper than just karaoke MP3's, then you need to start expanding your holistic approach to the world wide web.

Linear thought is obsolete online.

Not everyone wants to take life as serious as you and your split personality. Do you really have to share your paranoia with the rest of us? We all have our suspicions about things we cannot control but you either take too many drugs or not enough! Thanks for reinforcing just how ugly this world of ours is. It's generally something we try to look past so life can be enjoyable.

Dear ink butterfly, I do not take drugs. I'm the last person who should be anywhere near psychotropic drugs. however, i understand your point. just remember, it takes awareness of badness to defend against it and not be an accomplice to it. It's not really paranoia if it's true, by the way. You need to do some more research. Of course, it takes a little bit of courage of mood to study unpleasant things. But truth is always good, no matter how unpleasant. If i'm wrong about the unpleasant thiings that i think are true, then that is also a good relief. But it makes no sense to try to discredit people who are trying to help protect the common good. We are on the same side. But I am giving up on this internet, and the culture that comes with it. Adios. I'm unplugging myself from this circus circuit.

Re: ill net: (CONTINUED)

Oi there,

Look, you've raised some good points. But life does not begin and end online. Go out with some mates and catch a band, go chat up someone your attracted to, party on to some of your fave tracks, act stupid, make people laugh, make yourself laugh, be gloriously self-indulgent - know what I mean?

This has been a public service announcement from the house of Nigel...

A sigh of relief. Dissarm By Peaceful Musical Society = DBPMS

Good point, sir. Thanks for humouring me too. I shouldn't have posted that last message.
I was clearly in a bad mood. Yes, online is the last place to find the alpha and omega of life, that's true.
I am aware of that, but it's a shame that online is not a digital sanctuary away from life's crap.
It actually used to be one.

I am relieved that the snipers got tagged,
but i'm also sad that two skilled men used their gifts for destruction and mayhem.
such an American kind of tragedy. Strange, too. most serial killers are not black if you pay attention to the FBI statistics.

Odd things happen when people crack. All the more reason to focus ourselves upon peaceful activities, studies, and philosophies. And trust me, anyone who sheds blood is not a true spiritual follower, Islam, Christianity, or Judaism. George Carlin is my spiritual guru. Religion is sin. Look within.

OK, preamble:
Fuck KaZaA, and all the other "file sharing communities" which serve only as breeding grounds for viruses/trojan horses/worms/adware/spyware and internet scams. Fuck anybody who claims they are anything other than that. IF YOU DONT KNOW, SHUT THE HELL UP.

First things first: I meant what i said about the vocal distortion and concern about the sniper. Also, I meant what I said about the DDOS attacks and Windows XP. I didn't make this up, and neither did GRC.COM. GRC.COM warned us that there would be some massive DDOS hack attacks. This week's attack are just the beginning. I meant it when I said that I am not a hacker, nor am i a cracker, or phreaker, or criminal or company. I am just a guy.

The internet isn't the fun place i once thought it was. sometime since 1993
it's become a haven for pedophiles, sadists, con artists, embezzlers, auction scams, consumer spying, intellectual braindeath, copyright infringement, artistic exploitation, media hype, and repetition of history's dumber lessons.

when i first got into the internet big time, i wanted to see how far it could go into uncharted digital territory. however, the technology kinda sucks, the social atmosphere is crude, the porn is mean and/or fake or just plain sick. there is some goodness in archaeological research, but nothing is permanent. nothing good online ever lasts. email is a conduit for scams and more bull. nothing is truly anonymous anymore, and no one takes advantage of the cultural benefits of when it was anonymous. nobody seems willing to share anything worthwhile, and nothing worthwhile is available.

a lot of mean people are setting up websites: hategroups, rapists, liars, cheats, thieves, prostitutes, and those corporate giants who refuse to let big enough alone.

take a look at your browser. you may have 25 different flavours of javascript, 5 different flavours of HTML/XML and 365 different flavours of obsolete or soon to be obsolete media formats.

the software is designed to infect your system and modify it. software is designed to keep you in the dark while spooling loads of profile information to massively cross-referenced databases.

if you haven't yet, take some time to research face recognition online. it won't be long until there is an extensive database (legal or illegal) about every known living human face on the planet. it means that every advertiser and scam artist with a computer system will know who you are, where you live, how you live, and what you do, 24 hours a day, or at least all the time you choose to go out in public and spend money. OK. that's futuristic, but not too futuristic if you take the time to look.

back to the music. just why are you here? what do you seek to gain from this site and any site? do you want to be smarter? more popular? ahead of the curve? yer just a collector? you want to piggyback on another's fame? you want to get famous? what's it all about? well, you'd better start thinking.

this world is very sick. and some of it is certainly represented on the net.

Attention: Jason Horton VOCAL DISGUISE

Watching the national news about the Maryland sniper got me thinking about this site. As you know, I've been monitoring this site regularly for a long time. I happen to know that very seldomly do people ask about voice disguising or vocal distortion. I enjoy some old Ogre (Skinny Puppy), Frontline Assembly and KMFDM, and nobody does it better than them, so so vocal distortion is something that always catches my eyes and ears.

I am concerned that maybe the sniper came here to ask about how to disguise their voice. It's not impossible. Since no one knows yet who the sniper is, then it could be anybody. And the internet IS anybody. Furthermore, this site usually comes up first in many search engines for audio dsp freeware and advice and well... you know... anything about how to mess around with digital audio on a PC.

Actually, Rimmer and I answered a question recently about vocal distortion.
I am beginning to regret how good an answer I gave. I certainly hope i did not unwittingly aid some malevolent force. Anyhow, I think you should scan your recent archives for queries about vocal distortion. At least check out the most recent ones. Maybe you should consider submitting the IP addresses and/or email addresses to the FBI for analysis. Surely they are swamped with tip offs, but if you notice something particularly odd (even if you DONT) this could be significant. like i said, the sniper could be anybody.

I've seen some VERY strange posts come up on hitsquad, myself. And even the name "HITSQUAD" sounds like a reference to snipers. I'll be that probably helped entice the sniper(s) to post here if they did. Please take my plead seriously. I'm not joking or trying to get attention. As I said, in the years that I've come to hitsquad's message board, seldomly did anybody ever ask about vocal distortion. The recent posts inquiring about it seem a little odd to me. Also, those posters don't often appear on this site with those names.

Please think about this and don't be too skeptical. Lives could be saved if this fluke of an instinct of mine is somehow relevant. My future apologies to anyone who innocently wanted to know how to do vocal distortion. Yes, vocal distortion sounds cool, and not many know how to do it well. I understand that too. I'm not interested in living in a Police State, but I don't want to live in a guerilla sniper crossfire target practice zone either.

making a radio demo - How to input speech tracks to itunes?

Hi.
Wonder if anyone can help me?
I'm trying to make a demo for a radio show a couple of friends and i are putting together, and wondered if anyone could recommend any software for this.
Ideally I want to be able to have speech between tracks on a cd, but all of them numbered so the stations can just skip past a song when they get the idea.
i use one of the newer dual usb i-books (os x) and basically wondered if there was any way to do this through itunes? (ie Can I record bits of talking and then somehow make these into files itunes will recognise and then create a playlist to burn to a cd?)
Or is there a better way to do this?
Many thanks indeed for any help you can give with this
Yours sincerely

Built In Mic...

I was trying to remember if the iBooks have a built in mic or not... If they do, they don't expect the world from mic quality. If' you want it to sound professional, you will have to invest in at least a Griffen iMic and a decent microphone for vocals and therefore a decent preamp. All this isn't necessarily that expensive. It depends on your quality expectations.

Other than that, it's a matter of obtaining yourself some software for recording from either a USB or Firewire audio interface, or the internal mic... (did apple get around to putting audio inputs back on the iBook?).

I found this...

http://www.blackcatsystems.com/software/audiocorder.html

which looks basic but would do the job... Have a look here...

http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/audio

.... as well as there is more than likely other basic recording programs that I have so far missed whilst saving for Logic Audio 5 for OSX. Sadly, most of the OSX audio software is yet to come as Apple has spent the last year creating the final audio engine for OSX which has only recently been released as part of OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). Manufacturers of software have something more final to work with now. Hopefully, this will bring lower end OS X software to our doors. In the meantime, check out. Ableton's LIVE, Deck, Spark ME (Free), Logic OS X (overkill price, but very very nice anyway.. :), Bias's PEAK (demo available).. and anything else you may come across on the shareware/freeware market..

Greetings from Bristol, Uk...

Rimmer

Re: Built In Mic... - thank you

Many thanks indeed! Thats a big help. I went with the Spark ME programme and it seems to be doing the job.
There is a built in mic but no (disccernible to me, anyway!) audio input.
Many thanks indeed - thats definitely a great help and much appreciated.

Re: Sonicstage Label maker

Best to contact the sonicstage label maker people, I'd say.

cd player or burner

Thanks for the response.
Its a burner.

Re: cd player or burner

You'd want to export or save your song as a WAV file. If you want to convert it into a different format, you can do that later. Anyway, you'd then need some CD Burning software. You should have some CD Burning software which came with your CD Burner. I got Nero and it works really well for burning CDs. I started out using the Wizard feature and it does all the hard work for you. I don't know if you have any CD Burning software, but I'd recommend Nero. Still, you'll find a range of useful freeware <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/win95/CD_BURNERS/">here</a>.
