Picking music software

I've never used music software before, but I want to compose. Which program do you think I should buy?

Re: Picking music software

It really depends on whether you can play a musical instrument. Give me more information please.

Re: alesis datadisk

I'm asuming you don't want to go to the hassle of recording them in real time from a computer to the datadisk? There is a programme called ADM made by Giebler in Germany but I'm not sure if it's still available. My brother and I wrote a programme for converting these files both ways but it was for the the ATARI 1040 computer. Now that Gemulator is availabel free on the net (a programme emulating the Atari) we might be able to put it on the net if anyone is interested.

A search for Giebler on the net brings up www.midi-classics.com/giebler.htm but a recent test only returns an unreachable URL.

Perhaps you will be more successful.

Converting Quicktime files into WAV files

Hi

Is it possible to convert Quicktime files into WAV files, and if it is does anyone know where I can get a convertor.

Thanks

Nick

Re: Converting Quicktime files into WAV files

Quicktime itself should do it. I am not sure if you have to have Quicktime pro though. Just go to Export...

I can't find export on Quicktime. Is it only possible to convert Quicktime files to WAV files on Quicktime pro then, is it not possible to do it on basic Quicktime.

Thanks

Nick

I can't find export on Quicktime, so is it only possible to convert Quicktime files to WAV files on Quicktime pro, is there no other convertor that can be used when you only have original and free Quicktime.

Thanks

Nick

Re: Converting Quicktime files into WAV files

I use it on a Mac and it's under the file menu. I think it's greyed out if it's not Pro though..

Other than that, if you run the embedded browser version of Quicktime, at the end of the time line it a black triangular thing.. Clicking that gives you some save options...

There might be another translator but I don't know of one, sorry...

Recording streaming audio on classic Mac

Can anyone suggest software?

Specifically, I'm trying to figure a way to burn BBC radio broadcasts to CD.

Any help greatly appreciated,

Best,
Jason

Re: Recording streaming audio on classic Mac

If you ran OSX, then you could use Radio free

http://www.xlife.org/radiofree.php

I use to use Macamp

http://www.subband.com/index.php3?products

that allows you to record radio streams to Mp3's.

Re: Recording streaming audio on classic Mac

There seem to be no programs for Mac OS 9... but plenty for OS X.

Does anyone know a simple program/utility for OS 9??

MacAmp...

Macamp is for OS9 and OSX... It's a great program. It even plays midi files with it's own soundset (if you download it) which sounds markedly better than Quicktimes average soundset.

Press the record button and record the stream to Mp3

(digital input) soundcard for iBook??

I do lots of field recording of live music in the bay area using (among other things) the Lunatech V3 which provides spdf (RCA) cable digital signal output at various sample rates and word lengths -- 24/96 etc. I need a way to import this into an iBook, hopefully through the firewire connectcion. All the sound cards I can find seem to require a PCI slot which this machine does NOT have. Any suggestions? Thanks much!

Re: (digital input) soundcard for iBook??

In my opinion, Mac laptops have the edge in the audiocard market as they all have Firewire connections. Until recently, most if not all of them were large 19" rackmounted devices. If you wanted something small and buss powered, you would have to go USB.

It appears companies like Edirol have made good ground on the driver side of things and are therefore worth a mention.

If I was budget concious (well, nothing is cheap) I would be waiting for the M-Audio 410 firewire box

http://namm.harmony-central.com/WNAMM03/Content/MAudio/PR/FireWire-410.html

announced recently as it's probably got some decent mic preamps as well as coax and optical Sp/Dif

Thanks for that info., but, the Lunatec V3 is a mic preamp (one of the very best) and also Analog to Digital converter. It will produce from 44.1 to 192 khz digital ouput with word lengths from 16 to 24 bit. So, what I need is a card that will accept digital output from the V3 and then output it via firewire to the iBook. Thanks!

Re: (digital input) soundcard for iBook??

You have me confused then. If all you want is an Sp/dif route to your iBook via firewire at 24/96, there is a chance (awaiting more specific specifications from the 410 firewire) that it will suit you...

Yes, that's what I need. However, so far my findings have been that it's not easy to find the link from digital RCA (spdf) to firewire input on the Mac. In fact, some say it can't be done...

thanks,

James

Re: (digital input) soundcard for iBook??

If all you want is an Sp/Dif coaxial route into the iBook, you could go USB with the

http://www.edirol.com/products/info/ua20.html

Ua20 or the like... Converting to and from coaxial and optical could be done with something like this...

http://www.m-audio.com/products/m-audio/CO2.php

instead of spending all that cash, it would be tempting to go with the Firewire 410 though as you get a couple of decent mic pre's (probably to the Audiobuddy level or beyond, which is no bad thing) tons of outputs and a few extra inputs... Apart from that, it has a switchable optical/coaxial Sp.Dif..

Your Urgent Response Would Be Appreciated

Is it possible to disect audio recordings into its orginal tracks? If so is there any software that does this?

Re: Your Urgent Response Would Be Appreciated

: Is it possible to disect audio recordings into its orginal tracks? If so is there any software that does this?

Try using Diamond Cut Live:Forensics (DC Live) it will not seperate them into different tracks but you can isolate audio by cutting out what you don't want.

Re: Your Urgent Response Would Be Appreciated

Not without the master tapes.
