I have the same problem since yesterday and I use Windows 98 it seems to be a general problem. Curious that it appears nearly at the same time. Did You find a way to manage it? I have no idea until now.

There is no reliable technology currently available that
can do what you ask.

However, there are programs that will use phase inversion
of stereo channels to cancel out anything that is panned
to center in a stero mix - this often includes the lead
vocals but can also include other sounds such as bass and
kick drum.

For information and tutorials on this subject <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/cgi/htdig/htsearch.cgi?method=and&format=builtin-long&config=htdig&restrict=%2Fsmm%2Fnews%2F&exclude=&words=vocal+remover">click here</a>.

Spliting Vocals

Well I just want to know if there is any software out there to split your vocals and your music, so I could lace a track and make mixes?

That question gest asked at least once a week.

failure to get free dowmload

Following my expensive phone call, I'm in the UK, I used the links given in the e-mail, but received the same reply. Site has no data.
The site is, www. digidesign.com, and I know you can access this without problem.
Why can I not do so, here in the UK, using a Mac?
I have tried every single combination possible, and cannot download Pro Tools Free.
I understand that this is possibly a fault with the host site, so, please, can you inform them that this problem exists. I am sure that there are a large number of people who have tried to access this site, and am told, no data exists.
It is quite expensive to telephone to yourselves from the UK, but, thank the chap to whom I spoke at just before eleven today. The e-mail didn't work!

Re: failure to get free dowmload

Hello John

You were trying to download ProTools Free for Macintosh as I recall. The most direct link I can provide to you is <a href="http://www.digidesign.com/products/details.cfm?template=download&product_id=2040">http://www.digidesign.com/products/details.cfm?template=download&product_id=2040</a>. There is also another page at <a href="http://www.digidesign.com/ptfree/">http://www.digidesign.com/ptfree/</a>. You will have to register as a Digidesign user in order to download.

I tried <a href="http://www.macmusic.org/softs/soft.php/lang/EN/id/17/">a different</a> Macintosh music software site and was unable to access the program via the link they provided.

It could simply be the case that the file is currently unavailable at the host server. Sometimes files become unavailable or are moved without our knowledge. We do our best to keep our links up to date, but cannot always be sure that every link works due to the ever-changing nature of the Internet.

Your bet bet is to <a href="http://www.digidesign.com/download/help.html">contact Digidesign</a> for further details.

warm regards
Geoff Nicholson

I think you meant to contact Digidesign - this is the
discussion forum at Hitsquad.com.

One thing to remember is you must register with Digidesign
<b>before</b> you can download Pro Tools Free.

The file is being downloaded as an html file.

Where else can I download it from.

Re: Unable to download Tagscanner

You can get it here: <a href="http://torry.net/apps/utilities/mmedia/tagscan.zip">http://torry.net/apps/utilities/mmedia/tagscan.zip</a>

It probably downloaded as an html file because you used a download manager of some sort.

searching for software

My pre teen daughter wants to learn to write music. She takes piano lessons and music theory. We have a midi compatible piano. We would like to purchase software which will allow her to play a piece on the piano and then generate the sheet music and allow us to edit it. Any recommendations? It's for a Windows compatible pc. One other obstacle: the piano is downstairs and the desktop computer is upstairs-- neither very portable. Is there some device which can capture the piano playing and port it up to the computer? Thanks in advance!

Re: searching for software

Software I like for fun music composition: Band in a Box, and Jammer. They will create the other parts that you do not play for you; greatly simplifying the music composition process. I think this is a good way to get some ideas down, and start a composition. I am sure there are some people on this site that would frown apron this approach.

If you want to have more than full creative control over your composition, and you want to put every part together from the musical ideas floating around in your head, and not be influenced by the computers inspiration, then go with a strait midi tracker like cake walk. There are several, good shareware, and free ware programs on this site to take a look at if you have the time.

http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/win95/MIDI_SEQUENCERS/

As far as getting the music from the keyboard to the computer, you could run a long midi cable through the wall, or out the window. Whatever it takes, or you could get a portable midi sequencer. Midi sequencers are not cheap, not user friendly, not very versatile, and really just not a good idea in general. I would move the computer or keyboard so they are closer together. Music is a great way to express yourself, and expand the capabilities of your mind. Bringing the computer into the mix adds so many new avenues of possibility; especially

Newbie Mac mixer needs your help

Hi all,

Just got my new iMac. I'm looking for a software program that will let me do the following:

Choose a section of a song from an audio CD and use it as a loop (but be able to stop/start this loop for a number of bars in the new track)

Match beats in two different CD tracks (preferably without pitch distortion, but not imperative to have this)

Create my own back beats add add CD audio tracks over it

Have the ability to record my creations and burn them onto CDs.

My Mac came with an app called "Sound Studio" that works pretty well, but I can't make my own back beats, and I don't want to learn this program and find there is a better one out there...

Thanks all for your help.

Bob

Re: Newbie Mac mixer needs your help

First thing.

Boot iTunes. Go to Preferences. Go to the Advanced TAB. Select AIFF encoder. (The reason, I say this is that I think it defaults to Mp3 which you shouldn't use when importing for mixing reasons as the file will then have to be uncompressed again to use in 'most' mixing software/sequencers which will result in more time spent and a decrease in quality). Put in your CD, and then copy the tracks you want to a folder you know.

From here, you could try importing the resulting .aiff file into an editor. Spark ME is a basic version of a very good audio editing program which is worth a look. What you are really looking for is a Audio sequencer as in Logic Audio or Cubase. You can do all the stuff you wish and more although I get the feeling that you might be better suited to a program like 'Live' from Ableton software. There is a demo if you want to trial it out..

Re: Newbie Mac mixer needs your help

Oh there are better programms out there.. I wish I knew some for Mac Os. by "make my own back beats" to you mean sequence your own rhythms?

Re: Newbie Mac mixer needs your help

Thanks for the response Gecko. I'd like to be able to write my own beat/bass line and lay Audio CD tracks over it. If you (or anyone else) knows of a good program name(s) foir these things, free or otherwise, I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks.

making CDs in cda file format

I have a CD player that ONLY plays the usual CD format - not MP3, WAV, etc.

I want to compile CDs from CDs I already own. All I can find is software that makes MP3, which is no use to me.

I can make an exact copy of a single CD, but I want to make compilations!

I've heard that I have to also copy hidden data files between tracks - is this correct, & how?

And... converting MP3 to cda format?

Any suggestions how this can be done? What software?

Thanks!!

Re: making CDs in cda file format

your burning s/w should sort this out for you....
just ensure that you are choosing to burn an AUDIO CD (not data) and then choose the WAV files to burn..

Thanks - but does that mean my CD player (not CD ROM) will play them?

I'm still curious about recording them in their .cda format

need help with my digital mixdown

Hi,when mixing down from an eight track digital recorder to two tracks is the stereo quality better if I keep the pan buttons "center"or one "left" and one "right".
any help I sure would appreciate!
-GothGirl-

Re: need help with my digital mixdown

Only pan them L to R on the thing your recording TO,
But IF you're mixing to a DIGITAL recorder just plug in that cable & go...!

Re: need help with my digital mixdown

by one "left" do you mean one notch to the left, or one of the channels full left?

If you like the one notch left and right sound better its probably because without some sort of ambient reverb before the panning the sound is going to sound kind of fake, and distant from the other tracks.

If you like the sound of tracks panned full left and right you probably like the "in your face" type of sound. everything is kind of raw, but has a very distinct position in the mix.

The draw back of half panning (not full or centered) is that without reverb, it sounds like there are two sources of the same sound (and there are) this is something that the brain can easily distinguish when there is even a very small difference in the sound. (either in volume, phase, or delay) the trick with partial panning is to add just a little reverb so that the difference in volume and or phase that your brain hears is interpreted as an ambient sense of space. You want just a little reverb, or your brain is going to interpolate it as a hard wall, or as an impossibly echo-y space.

MIDI Software

I don't know if any one will ever read this but:

Does any one know of a way hardware or software that could take in two midi inputs and turn them into one?

You see... I have an Evolution USB UC-16 midi controller and a Roland PC-180A MIDI Keyboard controller and I want to be able to use them at the same time but I can't seem to work out how. Both Frity Loops 3.5 and Acid 4 will only accept one midi source at a time.

Cubasis VST 4.0 or Guitar Tracks Pro

I'd like to set up an affordable home studio on my PC. Initially, I want to be able to record some rythm guitar tracks and play leads over them. Eventually, I would like to be able to add keys and percussion.

My current system is a Dell Pentium 4, 1.8GHz, 40GB hard drive with 256MB RAM and an ADI 1885 Sound Max audio card.

I am considering using a Guitar Port as a pre-amp and am trying to choose between Cakewalk Guitar Tracks
Pro and Cubasis VST 4.0 for recording my music.

It sounds like the Cubasis might be more versatile in
the long run with features like virtual
instruments but I would appreciate any feedback regarding the best setup. Thanks!

how can I sound like a band

I play rythm guitar and want to have a full band sound,
What can I do. I do not play lead.Yet.
Please respond
Lewis

Re: Cubasis VST 4.0 or Guitar Tracks Pro

Logic Audio is good! and does just about everything.
Seems to be a bit better on the cpu as well.

VB Code for sending SysEx to M1

I have a Korg M1 keyboard that has seen many hands (it's a studio equipment). The buttons and slides have gone bad but I still need to be able to access the tone generator and change configuration settings.

I am a bit knowledgeable with VisualBasic programming. What would the code for sending SysEx messages look like as I want to attach such events to some controls?
