Stereo or Mono

I was basically hoping someone would be able to explain to me the fundamentals of stereo and mono. I've just started using cubase and i keep coming across the decision - whether to make the track stereo or mono. I always choose mono, but that is because i don't understand the benefits of having a stereo track. Could someone please help

the diffrence between mono and streo is self explanatory. Mono means one: the audio track is has one and only one channel, in other words, the audio played over 2 speakes, the sould will be the same on both right and left speakes. A sterio has two channels, which means the right and left channels doesn't have to be the same. A common effect on sterio is Pan, the audio is sent out to either right or left speaker.

Re: Stereo or Mono

Pretty much all sound sources are inherently monophonic. If I stand in front of you and start singing, my voice is monophonic as in it's one sound source coming from one direction. If I sang in front of you in a room, what you would hear would be stereo.

Why? because apart from the direct sound of my voice, you would be hearing reflections of my voice arriving from the surrounding surfaces. Also, your having two ears means that they will calculate the direction from which my voice is coming and, the height and distance relative to your head. We hear in stereo.

You could look at in the sense that each one of your ears is a monophonic receiver that when working together creates a sense of 3D space.

If you apply this to the decision of whether to record a stereo track or a mono track, you have to decide if there is a monophonic source signal, or a two different monophonic signals that will give that sense of a 3D space. For instance...

One microphone (whatever it's recording) is a monophonic source and should be recorded as such. A guitar plugged directly into a recorder is a monophonic source. A synth or sampler can create a stereo sound source which involves two outputs (left stereo field and right stereo field) and should be recorded as a stereo file. Looks at the source. If it's one sound source, record in mono. If the sound source is two 'different' signals that interpret the same sound source, it's stereo.

Re: Stereo or Mono

Ok... I always record in stereo on my computer. The wav files are twice the size, but I have enough space. I am now looking to open up a recording studio on a budget and noticed that most interfaces for computer recording say "records up to 12 tracks"... But those are 12 mono tracks, right? So basically thats actually 6 tracks stereo? Yeah? My point... What instruments should I record in mono? What should I record in stereo? After whats been recorded in mono should I convert to stereo? Like I said, I record everything in stereo through preamps with effects. Then add some post effects. I record 1 track of rythm guitar, duplicate and offset the dupe a milisec or 2 and mix them hard r/l. I record lead guitar and keep it centered with a wide stereo filter. I record bass and keep it centered with no widening. the drums are panned out from hard r/l. Vocals are centered also with a stereo widener. If you would like to hear a sample, visit www.dark-energy.com
I need some constructive criticism here... Or help. Thanks. Jalien of Dark Energy

Question about MIDI

It would be really great if someone could just give me a good definition of MIDI and how it works. I use Fruity Loops alot for mainly Hip-Hop music. I also have yamaha Djx. Would it be possible using MIDI to use my keyboard as a real-time recorder for Fruity Loops for samples I have on my computer. What are some other ways I could play with this? All help is very appreciated!

Re: Question about MIDI

I don't know fruity loops but due to it's architecture, I can only guess that you could control some of the synth stuff with midi.

Midi is purely a musical interface. It is really very basic.

The way I think of midi is as controller information. Imagine a bar of music with a fixed tempo running on a midi sequencer/recorder on your computer. If you play say, two notes on a midi keyboard within the duration of that bar, the sequencer will record at what point in the bar the notes where played, how hard you hit the notes, how long you held them for etc. (NOTE There is other information that it records but it's not necessarily important to understand at this stage).

When you play this information back (providing you have a midi output running back to the keyboard) then all the sequencer will do is send the information of when, how hard, how long etc etc back to the keyboard. The keyboard has no opinion on whether the note information is coming from your human hands on the keys, or from your prerecorded sequence. All it needs to know is what to play, and when.

For this reason, midi is basic information can be looked upon as information to tell a midi device what to do.

If Fruityloops is capable of receiving a midi input, then there is a chance that you can use your midi keyboard to tell Fruity what sounds to play. More information in the manual I suspect

Re: Question about MIDI

SO how da hell does it work?

Re: Question about MIDI

u need a midi port on your computer if u wanna hook up your keyboard with fruity or some other somftware .. your keyboard MUST have a midi out port .. u can use some sorta midi-usb or midi-15pin converter if your sound card didnt come with a midi port..

well hook up your keyboard .. go to fruity..midi options.. enable the midi input from your keyboard and ROCK ONNNNNNNNN

I want to mix my own music.

I want to mix my own music for cheer competitions. In the past we have paid $125 for 1 minute and 15 seconds of music. I need to be able to drop in cheer sound effects, possibly speed up or slow down music, use echos and use cds. What is the best program for me to use?

Re: I want to mix my own music.

hi!
i think you need the magix music

Re: I want to mix my own music.

It would all be easy for me to do with Logic Audio from Emagic.

Rimmer

Re: I want to mix my own music.

u dont need to bother with a complex software like logic audio just to put it some extra sounds in your song. try ACID DJ(traktor DJ if u wanna do pro DJ mixing)... get your cheerz and applause ( and whatever) samples ready .. and u can mix them with your original stuff./. change the pictch.. tempo.. aply dx effects without bothering about the software too much .. its shit easy to use

I can Not Decide Maybe You can Help

I want too produce mucic on the computer.I have messed with my friends computer, and I know that if I could afford a G4 that would be the computer that Iwould need but If you could give me some advice of a Good computer and maybe some programs that would be good to produce.Oh ya and I spin(dj) and I also need to be able to plug my tables in to record and sample. And I might get a ibook the blue clamshell, would that be good? HHHHHHEEEEELLLLLPPPPP .

Re: I can Not Decide Maybe You can Help

Check out ...

Propellerhead - Reason
Cool Edit Pro
Native Instruments - Traktor

... I'm a PC man so can't advise you on the Macs

Re: I can Not Decide Maybe You can Help

Either get a Mac with a built in audio input and output or preferably (much preferably) get a USB or even a Firewire audio interface.

The programs Keith mentioned are well work a look, other than Cool Edit which you can't get for MacOs. There are alternatives though. Reason for musical generation is awesome. There is a downloadable demo too.

For recording your decks, you could use Pro Tools free, which is free.

How much money do you have to spend?

NO SOUND FROM MIDI THROUGH CUBASE SL ON OS X

I've got cubase sl running on os x and it seems to be wired up right because im getting both in and out flashes through the toolbar on cubase and also flashes through the midi interface ( midisport 2 x 2 ). Also when i press the keyboard midi notes register and are shown in the midi window. Ive checked things like volume level on my keyboard and internal sound on the mac and both are at full, any ideas???

.......

Where is the audio output from the keyboard plugged into? Midi does not carry audio information. Plug a set of headphones into the keyboard and see if you can hear anything when you play back a midi sequence from the computer.

It depends what you mean by "chop and screw". Do you want to do remixes? Sonic Foundry's <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/cgi/htdig/htsearch.cgi?method=and&format=builtin-long&config=htdig&restrict=%2Fsmm%2Fprograms%2F&exclude=&words=acid">ACID</a> and <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/cgi/htdig/htsearch.cgi?config=htdig&restrict=%2Fsmm%2Fprograms%2F&exclude=&method=and&format=builtin-long&words=sound+forge">Sound Forge</a> will certainly help you get started.

Audiogalaxy Satellite

What happened to your program. I once had it and it worked fine, I downloaded it. I have the home page still but it doesn't do anything.

Re: Audiogalaxy Satellite

I think that audiogalaxy is out of the picture

Re: Audiogalaxy Satellite

RIAA killed the MP3 star. which was Audiogalaxy.
While the media was focused on Napster and Kazza, this baby supplied millions of fans with great MP3s with a wide variety of selections...and it was web based..

next to go ;edonkey
