Quality Check of WAV-Files

Hi,

I'm searching for a software tool which shows me whether a WAV-File is originally from CD or from MP3.

I don't know if something like this exists but it should be possible to determine whether a WAV-File has been compressed before or not (missing high frequencies, frequency gaps before high peaks, ...).

Does somebody know a tool which can achieve this task?

Greetz, Sebastian

Re: Quality Check of WAV-Files

Any program that can do frequency analysis will show whether a file has at any time been compressed. Have a look at http://www.btinternet.com/~wild.weasel/freq.htm

The analysis was done using Cool Edit Pro 2

Lister

Re: Quality Check of WAV-Files

: The analysis was done using Cool Edit Pro 2

Thanks for your fast reply. I've got Cool Edit Pro 2 but I found no way so long to make an automatic analysis.

A manual analysis requires about 1/2 minute per file and I've got to check over 3.500 files... :-)
Even if I spent an hour each day on that issue, it'll take me almost a year...

So I'm actually searching for a tool, which makes this analysis automatically und just replies (or even better writes in a text file) "compressed" or "uncompressed".

Re: Quality Check of WAV-Files

I've not come across one yet, but let me know if you do :-)

Lightweight multitrack for old Mac OS?

Hi,

All I need to do is record a couple of original songs, and convert them to Mp3 files. 4 tracks is plenty, don't need DSP or anything fancy. I could pay $30 for Sound Sculptor II, or $50 to upgrade the OS (no place to backup files, though, so I'd lose everything) and use ProTools Free. Any other options for OS 8.5.1, 96 MB RAM, 333 MHz G3?

-Paul

Re: Lightweight multitrack for old Mac OS?

See if you can find a copy of Logic audio AV or Logic audio FUN. FUN was free on a number of magazine CD's and gives you 8 tracks with some effects etc.. Logic AV was 16 tracks I believe. I think both work with OS8 onwards.

Check ebay for Logic AV or ask around for people that might have FUN on a CD. If I still had all my magazine CD's I would sort you one out.

Get back to me if you get stuck. I used to run Logic 3.5 on a 200mhz 603ev processor on a Mac 6400 with 72 megs or ram. I think I could get around 13 tracks with no eq's or anything.

You bounce the stereo mix down and then burn the resulting file with a CD burning program. Make sure that you burn an 'Audio CD' though..!

crossfade between tracks

here's the problem, i'd like to make audio cd from mp3 files, i want to make the

files to crossfade from one track to next track, so it will fade out during end of

is there any program that can make things like that?

Yep. Roxio's Jam is excellent at that sort of thing..

Help on makin music

I'm lookin to learn how to make music on my computer and i was wondering how to start. i.e basic music making programs (for beginners like myself). i own a 300 pound yamaha psr keyboard and i was wondering how to use this to my advantage. i wanna make sort of hip hop music and would also like a recomendation on voice and effects programs.

ps my budget is very low so free programs would be gd.
If u can help me plz do i'd really appreciate it. thanks alot.
Paul

Re: Help on makin music

I recommend you get yourself an audio/midi sequencer like Logic Audio or Cubase. Ntrack is a cheap windows based sequencer although I don't know it personally, I have heard it recommended many times.

Get a midi interface and then try and import some of your tunes from the PSR. You could then drag in some loops (from magazine CD's or the internet) and try your hand at contructing a tune

USB MIDI driver for BAFO Soul Drum System

Hi, I recently purchased the BAFO Soul Drum electronic drum kit and was disappointed to discover that it does not come with a MIDI driver - you are forced to use the included software to make it work. There's no reason why the device couldn't transmit MIDI data via the USB port. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've looked around for a driver online with no luck. Thanks!

Re: USB MIDI driver for BAFO Soul Drum System

hi mike,

just looking at buying a digital drum kit, and was wondering whether the BAFO soul drum kit is a decent kit, or a totally consumer thing? how does it sound?

was hoping you could help me out... if i hear anything about midi drivers, ill let you know!

thanks,
tim apter

Re: USB MIDI driver for BAFO Soul Drum System

On my computer, which is quite new, it sounds terrible. There's a noticeable delay between hitting the pad and hearing the sound. Also, the pads feel horrible. They feel completely dead. Don't bother buying this system...unless there are other drivers. That's what I'm currently looking for when I ran across this message.

Re: USB MIDI driver for BAFO Soul Drum System

Yeah, you get what you pay for. All those criticisms are accurate. As a novice non-drummer I still feel like it's a value @ $75 (though you'll be lucky to find that price). Another issue with them is that there's some errors with the triggering where one pad will play the sample assigned to another - usually an adjacent one. I'm guessing there's some "crosstalk" between the poorly sheilded cables. Anyway, a lot cheaper and more fun than a Dr. Rhythm! What is it, like $900 for the cheapest V-drums? Ouch!

How do I make DVDs from WMV files for TV

I hope you can help me. I own a brand new HP 530 computer which allows me to burn CDs and DVDs. I attempted to make a DVD from downloaded files off of the web. These files were either Real Player, or Windows Media Videos. I dragged them into Roxio 6.0 and was able to make a DVD that was readable and played ONLY in my computer.

Where can I find a software program for my computer that will make wmv. and similar downloaded files readable so they can be burned onto a DVD+WR and played on any "new" DVD/TV player? I want to watch them on TV???? Please let me know if there is such a program. I was told my someone in the store where I bought my computer that it is impossible to show Windows Media Videos on a regular DVD player. Is that person right?

Please answer me as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation.

Re: How do I make DVDs from WMV files for TV

Check what kind of discs your DVD player uses first - some only play DVD-R/DVD-RW (which sounds as if it's the case). If they play on a PC, then its not the software that's the problem.

Lister

Re: How do I make DVDs from WMV files for TV

can you play WMV on a TV by burning it to a dvd. if not is there a software that converts it

Re: How do I make DVDs from WMV files for TV

To the person who was kind enough to anwer me,
I purposely purchased a DVD player that DOES play DVD+RW, because I already own DVD+WRs and they do play.

Re: How do I make DVDs from WMV files for TV

In that case, it may be that Nero has simply copied the files onto the disc instead of copying them into the right format. Have a look at the DVD in Windows Explorer and see what file extension the files have. If they're .wmv then that's where the problem lies. If not, it's difficult to sort out exactly where the problem lies.

OK no I don't but email me and I'll ask in class next monday and let you know.

Mean while have you tried the following.

Recorded the same rythum to each freset.

Recorded no rythum to each preset ie:

record with HS8's rythum volumn turned off.

Considered moving up to EL90 as there is a professional editing package to address it's tone operators.

Hi,
find a rhytmn on the rollingpin 1-19 (or alternate) and then set up the tones in the various buttons on the left. When you find the one combiniation you like press the red button (by the registrations) at the same time as the number button. I set each of mine up using this method. It worked great!
Patti good luck!

pro tools compatible programs

My work load is increasing and I can no longer get away with 2 track
master, pro's & semi pro's want pro tools files. I don't have the
thousands you need for a proper Pro tools software/ hardware system (
i need more than 24 tracks), but I can afford a top notch sound card
and sequencing program. I was looking at sonar, cubase, & nuendo. I
currently use logic to sequence songs using it mainly for midi & the
softsynths. Logic is too hard to use for audio for me, the other
programs look easier to get around in.

What I wanted to do is set up a PC (I have a fast one all ready to go)
just for recording the output from my synths and samplers into to
compose my songs so I have total recall of the individual parts, and
also be able to record vocals in the same file and be able to tweak
levels, ect. I think I would need a program & a sound card capable of
giving a 48 track playback count with 'low cpu' using FX plugs on most
of the tracks without sweating. Am I dreaming or is this possible?

Anyone have any soundcard (anything in the $200 - $400 range) and
program suggestions (nuendo, sonar, ect)? The program would have to
be able to save files (export) in pro tools format and import pro
tools files without a lot of hassle. If I did take a science course
and learned logic audio capabilities (PC version) could I get what I'm
looking for? Anyone using Logic to do this skipping the Pro Tool
move? Anyone working on music without Pro Tools but able to deliver
your music in pro tools format? If so How?

Thanks for any suggestions & advice!

Logic has an object orientated design and is consequently very powerful.
Cubase on the other hand tends to have the common things 'hard coded'.
For example, in Cubase there are midi effects such as delay ready for
you to use but, in Logic, you could 'make' an effect such as that by
dragging things around and joining things up in the environment.

As you suggested, Cubase is easier to use but Logic is more intricate
and flexible, particularly for midi programming. Sounds like you ought
to download the Cubase demo. By virtue of it's design, I think you'll be
able to quite quickly suss out how it works and decide if you want to
pursue it. Same goes for Sonar whereas, I suspect most people would have
to defer to manual to understand how Logic works.
