MAC / PC sequencer file

Hi all,

I'm new to this music software world, so pls bare with me.
I was given a series of files on a MAC formatted diskette.
I was able to copy the MAC files onto a PC diskette.
Now I need to know if there is PC based freeware out there that will
read the ENIGMA file format or what my friend called the
'standard' sequencer format (I have no idea what he meant by
that). I also have the score in Finale format.

I have access to Cakewalk on PC and possibly I can get access
to Pro Tools on MAC.

Does Cakewalk read the ENIGMA format?
Does Pro Tools have a sequencer?

Thanks for the help.

Yamaha xg100 software direct to disk recording

I have a AWE 64 and Yamaha software Wave table synth, is there a way that I can re-direct the output to disk in a wave format, thus retaining digital purity, currently I have to output to minidisk, then record back to a wave, this is done in real time and takes twice the time. Is there a limitation in Win98, any other cheep alternative to the ( can only dream about ) SYXG1000 Yamaha sound card ( currently out of my price range :-[
Thanks...

Re: Yamaha xg100 software direct to disk recording

Please send me the Yamaha xg100 price. If there is a new version of it, please let me know about it.

Cood Edit Pro Hell (recording problem)

Need some help...I am in multitrack with track 1 playing a nice drum beat loop which I have across my screen, and have a keyboard in my Line In jack-with hopes of recording a base line...BUT..

When I play it back my base line starts out good but then gets out of sync and plays back faster. HELP!!
Thank you.

NEED a "sequencer reccomend" for old 486(WIN'95)

I've been a keyboard hobbyist for years now, and I just picked up a Roland XP-10. I am brand new to MIDI & I bought (it was such a deal!!) a copy of Cakewalk Home Studio 8 for $75 with it.... My problem is that it needs a Pentium processor computer in order to run right. Can someone reccomend a cool sequencer/editor/notation program that will get me by on my old IBM clone-- 486/33Mhz 16M(at least) Ram w/ a Soundblaster look-alike. I just need something to get me by until I pick up my new Pentium III system (ha!)

Any tips or suggestions would cause me to write a song about your heroic deeds!!!

Re: NEED a "sequencer reccomend" for old 486(WIN'95)

Just a quick note to say that evolution audio lite is pretty good. But only one track of audio though, I'm afraid. It suffices though!
I dunno whether this http is right but it's something like evolution.co.uk
Good Luck!

Try the Evolution range- Evolution MIDI ran pretty well on my 486.
Or Evolution Sound Studio Gold if you've got more cash (runs audio, too!).

They aren't state of the art, but not bad either.
Best of luck :)

New version of AnalogX AutoTune available!

Before you read any further, this is not the vocal tuning plugin 'Antares Autotune', this is a sample tuning program; so now you can continue reading...

For those of you unfamiliar with AnalogX AutoTune, it can take a wav sample, find the dominant frequency (note) of the original sound, and then retune and/or resample it to a note you specify. So, you can load up AAT and set the tuning note to C3, take all of your audio samples, drag them onto this program, and it will tune them all to C3. It's that simple. If you use a sampler, or samples, this program is an absolute MUST, as it ensures the maximum sample quality with the minimum amount of time.

AnalogX AutoTune has been awarded the 'TOP' rating from Maz Sound (http://www.maz-sound.com/), the highest rating they give, and that was for version 1.0! Here's some of the new features in version 2.0:

Support for Stereo wav file tuning
Support for 24/32bit wav files (both MS and IEEE formats)
Integrated DC offset correction
Integrated normalization

and a whole bunch more! It's available at:

http://www.analogx.com/

in the downloads section, along with a whole host of other cool free music utilities. Enjoy-

HELP!: Adjusting IAC driver in OMS

I need to trigger my softsampler(D-SoundPRO) from the midisequencer(MIDIGraphy). I can see IAC bus#1 in the OMS(2.3.6) in/out dropdown list on both programs, but I still can't get 'em communicating. What other adjustments should I do?

harmonies

anyone know of any programs besides Tonica that can help with vocal harmonies?

Re: harmonies

: anyone know of any programs besides Tonica that can help with vocal harmonies?

DSP-FX pitchshifter can add an endles variety of harmonies (including 3-part harmonies) for various
instruments and vocals. It can be used as a DX plugin in cakewalk, Cubase, Soundforge etc, but can also be used as a standalone program. It can also operate real-time to a live input.
No , I don't work for the company, I just think it's a pretty effective piece of software.
Got to go now, I've got he munchies!

What notes or time sign. to use to make open/close hi-hats?

Can anyone help me with open and close hi-hats? I can't seem to get them to sound like the ones you hear in all Dance music.
Any help would be nice. Thanks

Sound Blaster Live! vs. AWE 64 Gold

I'm building a new machine and trying to decide between the SB Live! and the AWE64 Gold. Which would you recommend? This machine is going to be used for my audio apps (Cakewalk,Cubase, etc) as well as my monster gaming system. With this in mind which should I purchase?

Neither! Here's an extract from a review in the latest edition of Computer Shopper Magazine :
"There's never been a piece of equipment I hate more than Creative's Soundblaster Live!. It is, as far as I can remember, the biggest bag of shit
I've come across in my life"
Of course the reviewer could not be more wrong; this accolade must surely
go to Creative's AWE. It, like the Turtle beach Malibu uses software wavetable
midi for 50% of the sound, which means in addition to not sounding too great, uses extra processor power, and confuses many application such as Cubase.
Check previous correspondance regarding Creative cards, and you'll see that they can be quite problematical. A card such as a Maxi64 has better midi sounds
and REAL surroundsound (outs for 4 speakers) for your games. The Maxi and nearly all cards like this are soundblaster compatible for games - except the SBLive! which
needs emulation (and more IRQ's - that's gotta be trouble!) for some older games. My advice is forget SB - look further afield
P.S. Do check out that review for a good laugh!

Re: Sound Blaster Live! vs. AWE 64 Gold

Well I've got a Live AND an AWE32 in my machine & everything's fine. Given, the Live "software" wavetable is shite,
but don't forget there are two hardware wavetables (=32 MIDI channels & 64 voices).
And only £120 or so.
Furthermore- it uses just 1 IRQ, just like anything else. I've read that review.
If he'd read the manual properly, the reviewer would have realised that the emulation
software EMULATES IRQs, it doesn't actually use any more physical ones up.
I mean, how many DOS games actually come out these days? How many people sequence MIDI in DOS?
I reckon that reviewer had had a bad day- everyone gets them with PC hardware, but he shouldn't have let it
influence the review the way it did.

And yes, I'm using Cubase. No problems.

Re: Sound Blaster Live! vs. AWE 64 Gold

Hi guys.
Thought I´d give you my opinion on the question.
Up to today I´ve owned several soundcards: Turtle beach Monterey, Tropez +, Soundblaster 32Awe, Soundblaster 64 Gold, Ensoniq audio PCI, and today I own the Sound Track 128DDMA PCI. I´ve also come across the Soundblaster Live!.
Now, in my opinion the Sounblaster family really IS shit. Although it totally depends on what you want to do with the card, I´ve never experienced Creative to manufacture what they promise. As in regard to the Live! card there is a hardware malfunction on it. It´s digital I/O doens´t have more than 13 bits (cards today should at least manage 16 or 20), which has been shown by independent tests. Therefore you get a S/N at about 70-80 dB which is a catastrophy. Normally a card should give you minimum 90dB. The A/D converter hasn´t even been given a number, but I reccon it´s about 18 bits. Other crap things about the card is that the digital out only has a frequensy at 48KHz and doesn´t have a optic S/PDIF. Now maybye theese figures means nothing to you, but what they say is that the soundquality is crap. Pure crap.
Other downsides is that it hasn´t got any ram-memory of it´s own, which might seem like a smart idea (you don´t have to spend 30 dollars on ram-memory). Instead it uses the computers memory when loading soundfonts. Now, unless you don´t have 128 Meg of ram, this IS going to affect the speed of you computer, and when you record in realtime.
So, my advise is: Don´t bye a Creative card. Putting another 60$ in, will give you soooo much more for the money. Please check out the Terratec EWS 64S (at www.terratec.co.uk), or the Soundtrack 128 DDMA PCI, which I´m using and to be honest is one of the best card I´ve ever seen (at www.hoontech.com). I strongly reccomend to by either one of theese. They are using the same DREAM chip, with the differenses of the ST 128 card beeing a PCI card, (which makes it faster).
The soundquality is tip top and you can buy many external brackets for the ST 128. The terratec software sometimes looks better to work with, and can also use SF2 soundfonts (94b is the native format for both cards), which ST 128 can´t.
In case you still want to buy a Soundblaster Live!, I´ll say buy the Live!Value one, and then buy a digital bracket which Hoontech has made for the card. Then use the drivers and programs for the EMU creation studio, which you can download at their homepage (www.emu.com). It´s the same card as the soundblaster Value, but with better drivers /programs.
So, there you go. Quite some text. hope you don´t mind. I just hate seeing people just believing the advertising of big companys, and then go out buying products that can´t do what they´re suppost to.
I use Cakewalk 8.4, Sound Forge 4.5, Acid Pro, and Rebirth 1.5, and the all work fine to me.
If you have more qustions there is a discussiongroup for the ST 128 card at www.egroups.com/list/soundtrack/, and I know that Terratec has one to (look on their homepage).
Thanks for the word, and have a nice day.

Wow, I found your analysis very interesting. The only problem is,
I need to use soundfonts. Could I buy a non creative soundcard
and still be able to use soundfonts? Or do I then have
to buy a creative card?

Hi there. The Terratec cards (EWS 64S/L/XL) are, as I understood it, supporting the native soundfont 2 (SF2) format (not the first original soundfont, [sbk-format]). So with that card you CAN use sound fonts 2.
Otherwise, there are some programs: Awave, samplelink, etc. that can convert sbk, SF2 etc. files into a format that can be used with the Sound Track 128 DDMA, for example.
On the other hand, why exactly do you have to use soundfonts? There are quite a lot of 94b-files (soundbanks for Terratec or Sound Track) out there. You get about 400 meg with the cards, Groovestyle (www.groovestyle.com) are manufacturing cd´s, the homepages of the companys that makes the cards are supplying you with a lot of them, and there is soon coming out a 32 Meg soundbank to the cards that are supposed to kick ass.
I know I had the same doubts before buying my card, but as it is, I really don´t regreat it (and I can also convert all the SF2-files that I need with shareware-programs).
Feel free to contact me if you need any more info.
Regards,
Victor

playing mp3 on a 6100/60?

i'm a brazilian dj and i'm thinking of putting together a mp3 box to take to the gigs. i've been thinking of a 1st-gen power mac, like a 6100/60, cuz it's cheap

but elsewhere i read something about the music skipping if you even move the mouse cuz it's so processor-intensive

anyone have any insights on that? also, how's the sound out quality of the 6100/60?

please cc answers to eu@tom-b.com

It's a well known problem with that "Error opening song file"
it appears when you use to open your songs without making any changes and then when you close rebith then all the recently opened songs (four of them) are getting corupted
there is no way of fixing the problem so I can just say "though luck" try finding the ReBirth 2.0 or 2.01 they are hard to find but they are all worth it.

peace...

Yeah... If you want to pay for them!!!

Senior seeks simple software

I am a nursing home volunteer seeking software for one
of my ladies who was a professional singer and
wants to try music composition.
She has the use of only one hand, so the best possible
thing would allow her to type musical letters onto the
keyboard and display them as sheet music. Also,
the computer I donated is Windows 3.1. Any ideas?
Perhaps something for children?

Thanks so much.
