Re: any good music printing software?

Finale 98 will do all you require and quite a bit
more. Finale Allegro is a less expensive version,
and does a lot of what Finale 98 does. Finale 2000
is now shipping for MAC, and will be shipping for
PC in the very near future. Finale is THE notation
software used by the pros in all fields. Another
program that is gaining momentum in Europe, and
starting to take hold in the US is Sibelius.

Re: any good music printing software?

Ray,

Capella from www.whc.de is a german program which
can do what you mention. Capella itself is a notation program
which takes MIDI/keyboard input and sets this to written music.
It can be combined with Capella Audio which analyses monophonic
audio input and converts it to the Capella proprietary format.

CD to HD

What software do I need to extract CD audio, edit, play files from my Macintosh hard drive.

Re: CD to HD

: What software do I need to extract CD audio, edit, play files from my Macintosh hard drive.
: Adaptec Toast comes with audio extractor, it's perfect, puts audio files straight on your hard disc, and onto another CD. I however need to clean up (scratch + hiss) recordings from vinyl and cassette before burning them on CD, anyone know of mac software to do this ?

Hi Carlo,
i find wavelab is a lot faster than Sf, especially when doing cuts and pastes out of big audio files.

Hey

I suggest Wavelab. Most people I know use wavelab.

Re: soundforge VS wavelab

I love Sound Forge. I've never tried WaveLab, but that's because there is a conflict when running Wavelab and Adaptec Direct CD on the same system. and I love Direct CD

The only reason that you are still having conflicts of wavelab and direct CD is because of a driver in your windows\system\iosystem folder called C2rec.vxd. Remove this and your system will hum along with direct CD and wavelabs own burning capabilities quite nicely. On the subject of wavelab and SF, I choose wavelab, because it is compatible with all of the wonderful vst plugins that ive collected in the last year and is easily the most stable piece of software i own

...but it doesn't work with ACiD, which is an essential remix tool (for me, at least)! I use SF, but I still haven't completely gotten used to its block marking features (a PITA!). Cool Edit Pro has (had) the more intuitive approach to marking blocks.

Features aside, though, it's not what your software can do -- it's how creative you are with your work. Some of my best-received mixes were done on (yikes!) Cool Edit 96 -- talk about one-shot work -- direct to two-track!

I recommend wavelab. I have been using it for quite some time now and more than does what it is needed to do. Most of my Mastering Artist friends either use Pro Tools or Wavelab. Wavelab is so clean and pristine and works well within my system. A very stable piece of software and very versatile as well.

Hello Venky,

There are some web sites, particularly www.homerecording.com, which can
give you some help but the best advice is usually in books. We have a
selection of some of the best books at http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/books/
in the 'Audio' section which includes books on recording studios.

I hope this helps,
Jason.

Re: Music Tutorial

If you want to set up a professional studio then I strongly recommend you consider getting some books on the topic.

Have a look through <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/categories/Audio/Recording/">http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/categories/Audio/Recording/</a> and even if you can't afford to buy the books at least you'll know what to look for in the library, but setting up a studio isn't cheap so investing a hundred dollars in books wouldn't be a bad move.

Re: Music Tutorial

: Is there any freeware in net which gives a comprehensive info + tutorial for setting up a professional recording studio.Pls help me!!

Venky,

if you are talking about a _professional_ recording studio, I wouldn't try
to save money on the basic information how to set it up. You will have to invest
a sum of several thousand dollars and so I recommend to be equally
serious when looking for information on how to build a studio.

Just a thought.

Need drum notation software

I'm having a hell of time locating software that will compose, print (and preferably play) specifically drum notation. please help.

Re: Need drum notation software

I'm looking for software that will simply and accurately notate information transferred from to it from my drum machine (boss [roland] dr770 "Dr. Rhythm"). I have Finale but I've had a dreadful time getting it to write the drum parts accurately, despite a great deal of tech. support and a fair amount of manual corrections. I would appreciate some help or at least some insight on this problem. Thank you.

Re: Need drum notation software

Steve,

all major music notation programs can do that.
Finale, e.g. lets you do different settings concerning
with which key you enter a note, how it is displayed
and with which key it's played back.

macs and midi

I have a powerbook 520 with a combined modem/printer port.
When I connect to my NS5R and then an amplifier, I can hear computer noises from the amplifier e.g. hard-drive spinning. This isn't normal - does anybody have any clues how to stop it?
Please email me.

Thank you

Just a thought - but perhaps you have an inbuilt microphone which is picking up the internal noises and putting them through your soundcard - if this is the case just turn off the mic.

"Sound Card: A better Soundfont..."

... playing soundcard than the SB live!
I mean this card really sucks..real bad indeed.
The output of the MIDI (soundfonts) device is
too damn low, don't you think so?
I mean, if your making music in VST, cakewalk or
whatever and mixing Audio (wav) with MIDI (SF)
you'll understand.
The only solution is this (config for the mix)

- you have to put the midi level to the fullest
- Decrease the Wave level with 30-40 %
- Now you're getting a better balance between these two sources
- But to be able to hear the music you have to increase the master level.

The Result:

You'll get a very high noise level because
the sources were to low (level) so you had
to raise the master output (higher noise).

And I HATE noise. I want my recordings as clean
as possible. Well This Could be possible if Creative
labs were smart enough too increase the volume of the MIDI...

So now I'm thinking bout buying a new card
that can play Soundfonts at a higher level.
The price doesnt matter, I only want a Soundcard
with Soundfont 2.x support. And I'm only intrested
in the soundfont part of the cards, Cause I
already got the YAMAHA SW1000XG , so forget
about the wav, games, A3D, 3D sound or whatever.
Thats why I bought the SB live cuz It was so cheap
and I only needed the Soundfont function.

Help me please........................

Thnx in advance

Re: soundfont cards.

Try the emu aps, info on www.emu.com. Its the business, C-Q

Re: soundfont cards.

Apparently you don't have a good computer or you
don't know how to use it because I don't have a
problem with the soundblaster live card or the
use of the soundfonts...something is wrong with
your setup or you don't know what you're doing
but running off at the mouth.

Software for harmonizing a 2 voice melody?

Hi!

I have written a melody consisting of 2 simultanous voices -
bass and sopran but as a novice musician I have difficulties
in harmonizing this melody - i.e. filling in the notes for the
missing alt and tenor voices so that the harmony rules for
proper chord progression and voice leading are fullfilled.

That's why I would like to ask the more experienced part
of this fine forum for advice for how to accomplish the
above described task with some software at least half automatically
- I can give the names of the chords I want at certain places in the melody
and the software should give the remaining
part of the chords.

Is that possible to do with some kind of software ?

Best regards!

Surely you can find a musician who could help you with this - i'm not knocking software - I love it - but it's what musicians are trained to do.
I live in the south if i can be of help. Email me.

Christian,

Tonica from WHC at www.whc.de constructs J.S.Bach-like hymns with
one or two given voices. Might be what your're looking for - works
quite well.

Good luck, contact me if you can't find it.

Internet Broadcasting

Okay, well I have heard some people talking about putting up internet radio sites. Well I have a decent knowledge of computers but no idea of how to do this or what is the best software for doing it.

I have an extensive MP3 collection and would like to be able to use that but I see that some players only allow for WAV files to be used.

I could really use some guidance because I am heading back to uuniversity in September and would like to set up a site ASAP./
Thanks

How can you take a long wav file (~70min +) and break it up witi

Here's my dilemna..I have files that I've converted from real audio to wav format, and they are BIG. Some are 70 + minutes. I want to burn these things to disc, but I don't want one 70min long song. Is there any software that will allow me to break the wav file up w/ tracks, but at the same time will play uninterrupted in a CD player?...Thnx for any response.

Hee Rip T...this should help

http://softcell.tsx.org

Has all the burning programs you can handle.
and a nice forum as well.

Re: How can you take a long wav file (~70min +) and break it up

Very easy to do, use a audio editing program for
whichever platform you use (Coaster if mac, wavelab
if ibm are good to use). Open up the wav in the
program and you should actually see the spectrum,
you can then highlight sections and cut them into
separate files, you then burn these separate files
onto cd using disc at once mode, however some
programs can't do that and will put a gap, I have
that problem at the moment and unfortunately no
one seems to want or be able to help me with a cd
burning program other than toast for the mac.

Re:break it up witihout losing contiunuity

doesn't your CD-R software have a pre-gap setting?

well

I have read in another forum that it would be
possible with cool edit. Burn it without the
normal pause. It seems that you can determine
yourself how much time there must be between one
track and the next. Never tried it though. just
read it. Maybe it's the way you're looking for.

Custom MIDI instruments on Mac

Hi,

I want to create a CD containing MIDI tracks of Indian instruments, and of course I don't want to use the standard GM patches.

In the Windows world, one can now create a new MIDI instrument by assigning single wave files to different keys of a given instrument|bank. This is called as DLS (downloadable sounds) and I believe it to be a new extension of the MIDI norm.

I am looking for the same feature on MacOs. Do sequencers support this feature, and if so do you have something standard, or do you handle this differently in each sequencer?

My idea would be to provide such an instrument already mapped, so that it just needs to be loaded in one's own sequencer.

I am fully ignorant of the Mac world, and therefore would greatly appreciate any help from your side.

Thanks.

AWE64 probs

Hi

I got 2 problems:

- when I want to record the cubase-played wave w/ wavelab, it doesn´t work. The wave is cut as soon as I switch to the cubase window, or when I go to the windows mixer-window.

- the names of the samples I put into the midi-ram of my AWE64 are not displayed in cubase. They are still the names of the original AWE64-Midi Samples, like hapsicord, piano1...

Does any1 know if this is posible plz read...... every1

i was wandering as it is possible to make the length of a song smaller say by a percentage rate like in Dart pro.. then when u slow it down again it orignal size.. why doesnt mp3 codec..have something like that when u encode it makes the length of the song shorta say by 98%.. (so its 2% of the original length overall)..
then when u play it u just make it longer again..?? isnt this possible..?? and its lossless ocompression i have been thinking of this for a while plz repsonde..

Hi,

uh, i don't know what's the exact meaning u are.
Let me try to solve your problem.

Actually there's just 2 method to decrease the
"volume" of your sound file. One is, as u mention,
decrease the length of the song, just logic; the
other method is, decrease the sampling rate, may
be it's a bit new to u. u may think that as the
quality of music. The higher the quality your sound
file , the larger the space of your sound file.
Since mp3 use this method to "compress" the
original sound file. It takes up little space
but with lower quality(no high end and low end)

Perhaps your program don't know how to determine
the sampling rate, so it's just say 2% of the original
length.

HEY I WANT MY FULL LEECH... LOOK FOR TUTORIALS HOW TO USE GRAPHT EDIT ....
TO DOWNLOADS DIRX8 SDK GO HERE :http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp?url=/downloads/topic.asp?URL=/msdn-files/028/000/114/topic.xml&frame=true

The graphedit tool is under the utilities of DirectX, you don't have to install everything I think, although I did a complete install because I have plenty of HD space. What it does is let you see and alter the path of software (codecs and drivers) used to read and play or write a multimedia file.

: When I get GraphEdit, what do I do?

: 1) Use the File->RenderFile menu option to load in a file.

: 2) Remove the last two "filters" (or software components) from the graph. These default to your sound card driver and your video card driver. We don't want that, we want to convert to a different file format.

: We'll do AVI, because that's what you'll want if you're using AVI editors to edit the movie.

: 1) Use the File->RenderFile option and choose your ASF file (can use WMV, etc)

: 2) The default graph is built for you

: 3) Delete any filters after (but not including) the Windows Media Audio Decoder filter

: 4) Delete any filters after (but not including) the ASF ICM Handler filter

: 4) Insert a new filter (Graph->InsertFilters) called "AVI Mux" from the DirectShow filters section

: 5) Link the ASF ACM Out to XForm In of Windows Media Audio Decoder

: 6) Link XForm Out of Windows Media Audio Decoder to Input 1 of AVI Mux

: 7) Link ASF ICM Out to Input 2 of AVI Mux.

: 8) Insert a new filter called "File writer" from DirectShow section and choose a file name

: 9) Link the AVI Out of AVI Mux to the In of your file writer

: 10) Right-click the AVI Mux filter and choose Properties

: 11) Choose the Full option of the Interleaving section and click OK (this makes the sound and video match up and is the whole point of the AVI format)

: 10) Press the play button

: 11) Wait until the play button is active again - this means the thing is finished (you can right-click on AVI Mux and look at the Current Position and Duration count to see how far in seconds the conversion has progressed during the conversion)
