I am myself, that which is myself, and depends upon myself.

The main reason I'm here? It's nice to try and be useful to others sometimes. Most of the junk i know isn't very useful to know anywhere else in the world at any given time. At least here, i can have a bigger sense of purpose. I may often seem arrogant or nerdy, but that's just cause i'm trying to give people the core info i wish i'd had or took many months or years to figure out.

Secondly, when i come here regularly, i stay up to date on things. I can learn about new and old products and software, how easy or hard they are to use, and what kinds of unusual issues come up when using them. I also get a better feel for typical questions that most people have about given types of audio products. I can also learn about current market trends from the hitsquad news, and get production ideas from other people's posts. I basically get smarter from lingering here, even though it's very specific and ordinarily unuseful information (in the big picture of the real world).

I also like the idea of maintaining somewhat of an online presence. The more time I spend online, the better i get at internet research. In the future, i will probably be rebuilding a better home studio, so until then, it helps to know what's out there.

I tend to talk alot when I go off about audio, but at least other people can maybe learn from me if they read between the lines. I have learned similarly from other folks online in the past. The most I ever learned about computers and audio was via word of mouth from friends, teachers, hackers, manufacturers, salesmen, repair technicians, and other musicians.

I hope that more than answer's your question.

rmx files conversion

I have my music files on my hard drive, they are in rmx format, what I would like to do is convert them to wav or MP3. Can anyone tell me how to complete this task?

Crystal Audio problem - No Sound

I have had no sound what so ever! Under the Device Manager it says " The NTKERN.VXD, MMDEVLDR.VSD device loader for this device could not load the device driver (code 2)" There is a yellow exclamation point next to the driver, as well as next to the USB Root Hub.

I've removed and reinstalled the drivers, I've been in contact w/the computer manufactuer, done what they've told me, and I still have no sound. My system says there is no sound card installed. Can anyone help me out?? Thanks

Bounce to Disk from Pro Tools LE

I've recorded a number of songs and when I bounce them to disk at 16 bits and 44.1 KHz as a WAV file, Nero won't allow me to burn the WAV file as an audio CD. The WAV files play back fine with WinMediaPlayer, and even transfer fine as data CD's. Is this a Nero issue??? What should I do?

Some place the music potential buyer can search, before making a purchase of a CD that has copy protection. Packaging must inform the buyer, but it appears this is not the case, buyer beware, does not inform the potential purchaser. If the packaging is properly labeled, then it becomes the buyers decision to purchase or not make the purchase. However, unlabeled or fine print labeling does not allow the consumer, the purchasing choice.

no cd patch for Rebirth 338

I have a copy of Rebirth 338. The only thing is that it doesn't work. It need to have the cd. Does anybody know if there isa no cd patch for this problem and where I can find it?!

Korg M1 & SYSEX data

Hi all,

Anyone have any experience in dealing with sysex downloads/data?

I've been producing music (hard house/trance mostly) using cubase/acid pro 3/soundforge (etc,etc) using bass/synth/drum hits/loops in WAV format downloaded from the good old internet and some of the GM sounds (converted to WAV to add effects etc) but now feel that it is time to move into developing a more personal style by incorporating new sounds.

I have a Korg M1 but have no experience of synth programming and have read in several discussion forums that new patch banks are available for download from the net but there is always mention of 'sysex' data.

Does anyone know what 'sysex' data is and how easy is it to get to grips with?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Be careful what you ask for.

SysEx isn't as easy or as fun as loading and saving and editing sounds. But if you must know about it, start by learning the terms.

To use Korg M1 patches from the internet, you need what is called a Patch Librarian. A Patch Librarian loads, saves, and stores synth instruments via MIDI and a computer. This is what you should search online for. Once you get <A HREF="http://synthzone.com/korg.htm">a decent search result</A>, search within that current page for "M1".

For most popular synths, such as the Korg M1, there are at least 2 software programs to use (usually a Macintosh version and a PC version).

You don't need to know System Exclusive programming to be able to load these freeware patches onto your synth from a computer using a Patch Librarian program. System Exclusive is a useful scripting protocol to know in case you'd like to create your own personal Patch Librarian.
Writing your own Patch Librarian would be rather difficult, but there is a kit available if your computer runs HyperCard 2.1 or later (not the player, the actual program). I'm listing this info for any mac people out there who want to dig deep into this stuff. There is a program called <A HREF="http://www.earlevel.com/HyperMIDI/">HyperMIDI</A> which you can use to modify into a personal patch librarian. Dartmouth and MIT also provide additional HyperCard tools in the form of XCMD's and XFCN's (External commands and functions). However, that is probably not what you'd be interested in getting into, unless you like computer programming or scripting. And it does require a mac or a system emulating a mac.

So, just search online for your patch librarian according to your computer or operating system type.

Useful keyword search terms include:

68k = older Macintosh computer
PPC = PowerPC Macintosh computer
mac = Macintosh computer
win = Windows PC
95/98 = Windows 95, Windows 98
2K = Windows 2000 or Millenium Edition
XP = Windows XP

hex = hexadecimal
ftp = download programs or files
freeware = so you get the cheap stuff
editor = just in case you'd like to edit too
MIDI = let's be specific
Korg = never forget the actual inventor
M1 = never forget the actual product

In order to utilize MIDI system data such as SysEx, you need to know how to deal with Hexadecimal numbering = {0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F} = 0 thru 16.
Most raw computer data is hexadecimal, so it's not hard to find hexadecimal editors as freeware, but these programs are for people who need to modify existing programs and files as raw machine data, not as text or pictures or sounds, etc. Hexidecimal data is easy to read, but difficult to fully understand inside of an actual file. That's because it's all just numbers. Hex editor programs will translate for you automatically into ASCII text, which is readable, but not necessarily any less confusing to the untrained eye. For example, <A HREF="http://www.cs.ruu.nl/pub/MIDI/DOC/CZ101.sysex">this link</A> is a brief example of the most basic SysEx transfer between a computer and a Casio CZ-101 synthesizer.

Like I said, you just need the patch librarian for your Korg M1 so you can deal with files from the internet on your computer. Since you might also want to edit your patches from your computer, I've included that ("editor").

So here's a good start for you...

midi file formats

Is there any way I can convert a midi file I have downloaded from the web so that it will play on my Roland Sound Brush midi file player? Many midi files will play on my computer but when I transfer them to a floppy and try to play them in my Sound Brush, I get a "no play" message. I have had several people able to convert these midi files from their web site so they will play on my Sound Brush, but I don't know what it is they do. Some refer to a type "1" which won't play, and type "0" which will. Others mention GNMIDI as a converter program but they couldn't find the URL. What's that? Thanks for any help.

Maxell MP3 Jumper error message, Do you have the same Error mess

I have been encountering error messages when using my MP3 Jumper II to upload PC files from Jumpewr to PC. The error message usually comes when I upload large multiple large files. The error message states that the "Folder" server is busy. Strange though my uploaded files are ok. Does this occur on your unit too? I'm wondering if this is only a bug of the player.

I experience some error when uploading PC files in MP3 Jumper II (USB edition) to PC when uploading more than 3 files with at least 5mb each and doing this more than once. It says the server folder is busy. Do you have the same error message?? Strange though, the files I uploaded are OK.

Remixing Software

I need some software that would enable me to remix songs... I would like to be able to lift the vocals from a song and lay down the music tracks myself. Anyone have any idea what software I could use?

Remix your mind, and your tracks will follow.

You need to find an A CAPELLA version of the song you'd like to pirate. A CAPELLA means it's a song with mainly voice or only voice. If you collect remixes you have probably heard some. A lot of remixes aren't A CAPELLA, but could be used in the same way. It doesn't take much to change a song by adding overdubs or doing some fancy editing like replacing all of the choruses with scratching solos or something like that.

If you really need just the vocals, you will need to contact the record label, studio, and artist that did the original recordings to get permission to do your remix.

You might think I'm crazy suggesting such a big bold move, but I might think you're a bit off trying to rip off somebody elses sonic art.

Why don't you just make up a better song on your own ? No existing piece of regular software is going to karaokebob the vocals for you. You can get the overall flavor extracted, but not the whole deal. It's like somebody baked a fruitcake, and you'd like to know how to remove all of the cherries without destroying the cake. Silly rabbit, tricks are for kids.

remixing is one of the best ways to complement your favorite artists, and learn their production techniques.

You can download Audacity, and chop up your sample into about 12 sections. Try to make each sample about 25 sec or so. Now you modify each of the 12 that you have cut up, and mix them in realtime whether it be via hardware or software. If software, you can still use Audacity to cut and arrange your mix, or you could go buy Acid.

Sometimes as an artist you do need to remix and re-ground yourself to others styles. So often we become obssessed with our own sounds that we forgot what was once special to us.

Anyway- YOUR NOT RIPPING ANYONE OFF, and the clubheads need a familiar jam every once in awhile.

You sound like you're a bit confused. AVI is known as a video file, although you can rip the audio from them. What you will ideally need to do is convert a WAV to RM. Use the RealProducer which you can find via this <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/search/">search page</a>. The do a little homework. help with latency please

I have a G4 with 384meg ram (recently upgraded from 128meg) and audiowerk 2 soundcard runing logic audio platinum and i've got some audio latency. I was wondering if anyone knew good ways of tweeking my system and software to get rid of this. Also do you think it might be that it hasn't recognised my new ram yet, caus i really didn't think i would get latency using an e-magic card and 384meg of ram.

I don't know what the latency quote is on that card but it has been around a while, might be getting on a bit.

I nearly bought that card but went with a Korg1212 for the ADAT. I think the cards were pretty well spec'd together and mine gives no noticable delay unless two tracks are play aside each other and it sounds a little out of phase.

What audio are you recording?? Is it a mic through a mixer? line level?

It;s usually down to the card but in a way, it doesn't make sense with that card. Check for newer device drivers etc etc...

recordng program

hey, i recently got a tascam us-428 for my mac. it is hooked up and works fine, but i need a good program to record tracks. i used cubasis and protools, but you can only record 2 tracks at a time with them. could you reccommend a good program that i could use, preferably free, as i am only 14 and do not have much spare money. please help

You could try and find a copy of Logic Audio FUN which is often touted around magazine cover CD's for free. There is usually an upgrade to Logic AV for a nominal fee. I don't remember how many tracks it can record, that might be something to do with the USB interface, I don't know.

If you need an audio editor and you use OSX, then go and check out the free version of Spark ME. I doubt it will be free for long..

which is better for music software, Macintosh or Windows?

I'm debating about getting either a Macintosh or PC laptop, to be used for music creation, and I was wondering if anybody had any opinions on which is better. It seems there are more programs like ACID and Audio Mulch that I know are good for the Windows set, but I've heard that Macs are better in general for music production/mixing/etc. Any help?

There are enough people on either side if this fence to spend many a message arguing and justifying their own purchases. As Jon said, it's a matter of preference. Whatever works best for you.

One thing is for sure, considering the coverage and recommendations for music laptops, the G4 titanium is always at the top of the magazines lists. Whether the platform or the software are major considerations or not, the Ti laptop is hard to beat for audio.

Thanks Steve, I seem to have found that there is quite a bit of argumentation on this subject. I suppose, as someone else has suggested, it's whatever one is comfortable with that should determine one's purchase. How can I install the AGSatellite under Linux? I Downloaded the tar.gz-file and extracted it. But what shall I do now? There`s a prgramfile (AGSatellite) but it does nothing if I start it.
