Many thanks for your quick response.

As i frequent visitor to a number of forums for years,
i fully understand the things you said about human nature.
However, with respect, must point out a few things that you seem to have missed.

1. It is NOT the Format of this forum that we Don't Like;
it IS the Lack of Functions that we Hate.
To name a couple of fundamental functions it is lacking in:
Search message/archive & Email notification.

2. From the standpoint of those who are giving help.
For one, i don't really mind if a newbie to a forum asks a question that
has been asked by others 1,000 times before. If only the forum has a
search archive function, in reply, instead of writing the same thing again
& again, i would *either* search for the message(s) containing the answer
& post the link (when i am in good mood) *or* tell him/her to do a search
him/herself (when i am in bad mood.)

3. From the standpoint of those who are receiving help.
I have been receiving help from, eg, WebBBS Support Forum. That forum does
provide email notification giving both the content of the response to my
post & a link to that response. But every time, instead of reading the
response from the email, i would go to the forum to read it from there.
Why? Becoz i knew for sure i would find more info from the forum than
from the response alone. Eg: others' responses to that response etc.

4. You said "We provide a high quality service for free to the overwhelming majority of our users."
In response to this, i can do no better than quoting these from SteveR's message under this thread
(emphases added by Tarty.)

"Can anyone give me ONE good reason why it's worth posting answers OR questions here
when people (*over 90%* lets face it) *don't come back for the answers.* There is *nothing
to be learnt here*. It's either in the stupidity of the poster or more the point that this
forum model in some way suggests that there is a Email Notification System. THERE ISN'T...

"WHY is it that *woman seems to come back for their answers more reliably than men*. It's true. Are men stupid?

"GET THE MESSAGE. Come back or don't post. This board is largely *a waste of time* due to this MAJOR problem.
This forum *rarely holds more than a few occasional regulars* which is testament to the fact that this board
needs replacing.

"If the members board is to grow, this forum has to be able to rival the *quality* of almost all the other forum
boards on the net. It doesn't. It's far from doing that. I'm personally very tired of coming here and typing for
no reason..."

Like SteveR, i am tired of it too. To me, this is a question of
Quantity vs Quality. Needless say, as a user i expect to see the latter.

Best regards
Tarty

: Hello all

: Like it or not, human nature prevails. People will always come to this, and other forums, to ask questions and request answers delivered via email. Call it lazy or simply misunderstanding the culture of discussion forums - it's always going to happen.

: People will also ask the same questions. It's as simple as that. I do not think any less of SMM visitors because they ask basic questions. I try to help them. Not only because it's my job, but because I believe in giving people some help when I can offer it.

: In the case of the discussion forums, we're aware some people don't like the format. But bear with us eh? We provide a high quality service for free to the overwhelming majority of our users. Believe it or not, we've got over 4000 discussion forums on SMM. Switching over to a new messageboard system is not going to be as simple as an afternoon's work.

: If you've got more thoughts on the issue, please offer your suggestions to our CEO Jason Horton . Like me, he's always happy to hear SMM users' thoughts.

: Warm regards
: Geoff Nicholson
