Will your Music software and computer make you a criminal?

Posted by Namida (from: 65.160.209.249) on April 29, 2002 at 13:15:06:

If you enjoy making or listening to Music & Movies then you need to be concerned. Please get your neighbor and friend involved also. How and what you make (Digital Music Movies), distribute, and enjoy media are being discussed, in Washington DC.

Imagine a world where all digital media technology is either mandatory or forbidden -- Senator Fritz Hollings with the Music & Movie industry has introduced new legislation to kill more American consumer rights.

April 22, 2002, Senator Hollings introduced the Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act (CBDTPA.), This legislation would give "The Movie & Music industry the power to stall new digital media technologies and take away more consumer rights in America. His legislation will effect all Movie & Music devices and decide which innovative features are forbidden in America.

The Senate has called for comments on the future of digital media distribution, an issue that is entwined with technology mandates.

What YOU Can Do Now:
This is YOUR chance to voice your opposition to laws that make all digital media technology mandatory or forbidden.
 Fax a letter to the Senate. Senate staffers will ignore anything they believe to be a form letter.
The Senate Judiciary Committee's Chairman Patrick Leahy and Ranking Republican Member Orrin Hatch are accepting comments via fax at +1 202-224-9516
 For information on how to contact your legislators and other government officials, see EFF's "Contacting Congress and Other Policymakers" guide at:

In late February, at a congressional hearing, Senator Fritz Hollings http://www.senate.gov/~hollings/ (D-S.C.) chastised technology companies for not coming up with solutions to curb digital piracy. He also said that he planned to draft a bill intended as a solution.

Now, Hollings has introduced anti-consumer legislation, the Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act (CBDTPA.) If you produce and distribute your own media, this concerns you. If you archive your purchased media, this concerns you. If you do not want your computer and components legislated then please get involved.
