HELP! Basic set up for Roland Sound Canvas

Posted by David Roy on Fri, 05/31/02 - 02:50:41.

I just received the original Sound Canvas from Ebay. No manual is included.
Could someone tell me how to get sounds from the Sound Canvas thru to a
Yamaha Clavinova.

Right now I have MIDI OUT from the Yamaha to MIDI IN on the Sound Canvas.
And MIDI IN from the Yamaha to MIDI OUT on the Sound Canvas.

How do I get sound to come thru the Yamaha speakers?

Thanks

Re: HELP! Basic set up for Roland Sound Canvas

The midi connection yells the Sound Canvas what notes to play. THe
sound comes out of the audio output of the Sound Canvas, which will
need to be amplified and fed to a speaker.

If your Clavinova has Aux In audio sockets, you can use these and hear
the SC through the Clavinova's internal speakers.

I've connected output jacks to input on a Fender amp and Optional In on the
Clavinova. I get a different sound and can control the volume with the Sound
Canvas Volume control now, but cannot get effects.

Thanks

Re: HELP! Basic set up for Roland Sound Canvas

You sound like you are confusing midi with audio. Midi has no sound, it is
merely a data set to tell the sound module what to sound and that is
converted to audio.
Early sound canvases have limited effects. The SC88Pro and later have 64
insertion effects but you need a computer with proper software to use them
effectively--although theoretically you can set them on the face plate of
the more expensive ones.
Roland is decent gear but even with the manual it is a brainbuster, and
Roland is not a big company and the manuals that exist are written by the
brain dead.
There is a Sound Canvas Users group on the net. And they can help.
Which SC do you have, what model?
The big advantage of the SC's is that they are backward compatible, so what
you make for a 55 will play in a 88, 88Pro. 880, 8850/20 this is the real
big advantage for the professional live player.

Re: HELP! Basic set up for Roland Sound Canvas

Thanks for your help. The panel just says Sound Canvas so I believe it's the
first model. I'm finally able to get the sound effects out of it. I just
start pushing all the buttons until I get something.

Your right it's a brainbuster and I heard the manual wasn't any good.

Thanks,
David

You will need to plug in the output from the sound canvas to the line in
on the clavinova and make sure the speakers are set to on on the
clavinova.
