Compression is not the way to level a recording. I personally use compression sensibly and often although it's through understanding the technology that gets you the results you want.

If your recorded tracks are too quiet, then the person that recorded them didn't know what they were doing with their gain structures.

Simplest way is to Normalise the tracks. If it's a commercial recording, it will have been carefully (although not desirably necessarily) mastered by a professional. Compression on a properly mastered track is missing the point. If it's your own music, then normalising will get you out of the situation your in and compressing the normalised track may give you the desired punchiness if set correctly.
