Some people use compression on the outputs of their DAW's and this would create this situation. Other than that, it's more than likely a case of other instruments occupying the same frequencies at it and essentially damping them out. Lots of full range instruments in the same passage can cause problems. I could play you some tracks with guitars that have been high pass filtered so much, that they sound naff on their own. Put in the rest of the instruments the high pass filtering gave room for and the song sounds great. SteveR
