In Reply to: troubleshoot mp.3 file conversions posted by crystal daubner on May 31, 2002 at 18:45:29: Crystal, What program are you using for conversion (music jukebox)? Occasionally some people find it cute and keep miss labeled files in the Peer to Peer upload location. MP3 files can be relabeled with the wrong file extension FYI. Please make certain your anti-virus program is up to date, with the latest virus pattern file, and try them in another player, in MP3 format. ______________________ "Nullsoft, which makes WinAmp, has confirmed the vulnerability, which does not affect the newest version of the software. Version 2.80 of WinAmp is available on NullSoft's Web site. Quick fix; the problem can also be fixed by disabling WinAmp's minibrowser. The weakness is particularly dangerous since MP3 files are were considered safe, and millions of users frequently trade them with unknown Internet users via file-swapping services such as Gnutella Clients, along with the popular Kazaa and Morpheus. A bug in the code of WinAmp 2.79 allows a specially formed data tag in an MP3 file to cause a buffer overrun in the application, which could be exploited to run any piece of code the attacker wishes. Andreas Sandblad, a Swedish engineering student, posted the glitch to the BugTraq security mailing list on Friday. The perilous code embedded in the ID3v2 tag used by some MP3 files to carry information on a song track, such as artist, album and genre. When WinAmp plays the track, it automatically tries to query the WinAmp Web site using the information in the tag." One suggested fix is to use a good tagging program to re-tag all your recent MP3 downloads. You should do this to prevent spreading the malicious files to other users that might download files from you if you are considerate and share your files. Quickeditor V4.0 is available: Is this the first incidence in which this happened, for you? Also, Crystal an easy check to make certain is to verify if these selections will play in mp3 format? If they play in MP3 file format, then I would suspect it is just a file conversion problem, and I would try another converter. I use a stand alone program, "MP3Decode" It is a fast, high quality, and easy to use decoder to convert all those MP3 files you have collected to WAV? Allowing you to create the WAV files needed to for Audio CD Rs that play on a good number CD players.
