Its a very comprehensive piece of software with superb quality. Very easy to understand coz its interface is a great simulation of the actual hardware. The sound quality is excellent, and you can make everything from percussions, beats, to bass, piano, cellos, synth, etc. You can sequence it all, you can use midi, and the list goes on... In short based on your brief description, I think Reason would be one of your best choices.
