Hi, Its really hard to suggest a 'BEST' software for composing a song. That would be too general. It still depends on what kind of music you are looking into making to help decide. You asked about the largest number of intruments, and you also asked to be able to customize the sounds or samples yourself as well as write the molody yourself. You also asked for an 'easy-to-understand/intuitive interface' software. In that case, my BEST suggestion would be 'Propellerhead Reason'. Its a very comprehensive piece of software with superb quality. Very easy to understand coz its interface is a great simulation of the actual hardware. The sound quality is excellent, and you can make everything from percussions, beats, to bass, piano, cellos, synth, etc. You can sequence it all, you can use midi, and the list goes on...
