Creating Acapella??? (isolating vocals)

HEAR ME OUT.

I know you've heard this question a lot, but my issue is a bit different.

I'm trying to create a 5.1 mix of a song that was originally on a typical CD (Pro Logic), and I want my center channel to be primarily vocals. I'm not asking for 100% vocal reduction; I'd be completely satisfied with 40-50%.

Is there no way to get even this much vocal reduction?

If it helps any, I've got both the instrumental and the origincal track. Can I not subtract the instrumental's audio or something?

Thanks in advance,
- Tony

Invert the instrumental mix and add it to the whole mix (instruments + vocals) The result should be just vocals. (If there is no difference in the mix or mastering)

-(instruments) + (instruments + vocals) = vocals.

You may have to play with the volume and position in time if the mixes are not identical. (positioning down to the sample is key so you don't get some tape flange type sound.)

Re: Creating Acapella??? (isolating vocals)

Thanks...

Still a bit confused, though...

This is in SoundForge:
I made sure the songs were totally in sync, and then I copied the instrumental, and tried pasting it (using Mix Paste) into the normal song.

Both the vocals and the music still seem to be at 100 percent though...

Did I do something wrong (sorry, I'm new to soundforge), or is this just a song were the mix doesn't facilitate this process?

Thanks again,
- Tony
