: What does everyone think about the steps that are being taken by the major labels to make music available for downloading? I am interning at Universal, and I know they have made songs available for downloading. You can check it out at www.umgdownloads.com and see if there are any songs you are interested in. They use Liquid Audio instead of MP3's, which they say sounds better. What are your opinions on the subject?

The Majors' downloading services are doomed to failure...

None of them can offer a complete catalog in the same
sense that a CD retailer can due to a combination of
their inability to agree on business approaches, and
also Anti Trust legal issues.

A solution would be to license their music to completely
independent third parties, however none of the majors
have shown any indication that they will do this.

There are other potential options, but it's going to
take a major facing insolvency whilst being blocked
from competitor merger to embolden a board of directors
sufficiently - EMI may be the only hope.

Essentially Major's have to consider the idea that
copyright is not their primary asset, and only a
desperate group of shareholders will allow a board
to take that view without stockholder lawsuits.

Jason.
