In order to play on CD players the files need to be converted to .cda format. Most burning programs (Nero, Adaptec, Roxio, etc.) will convert .wav files automatically when instructed to burn a MUSIC (as opposed to DATA) CD. You may need to convert mp3s to wavs first (although some burners will now do that too).
