I think you should do it either way depending of which one fits the song. A dry mix with an Aux send to an Fx unit is fine although always make sure that the effects unit is set on 100% WET or you might (will) experience some phase cancellation. I am a big fan of using synth patches with their effects (if they sound good) as it gives different layers to the final sound. Choose the wrong ones and you'll hear the mess it makes. Considerations like this are best made with the ear in my opinion..
