There is such a thing as automatic gain control, built into the microphone inputs of all sound chips. If you dont turn it off, then while you record into the microphone, and there is a brief portion of silence, the recoreded out put of that silence will not be silence, but a raspy back ground, since the automatic gain control will turn the volume way up as high as it can go. In the Sound blaster, you can turn off the automatic gain control but.... I have an ALi sound chip. Does any body know how to turn off the Auto matic gain control on the ALi sound chips (or any other sound chips, for that matter).
