It sounds to me as if your car MD player only supports the old "SP" track format, which unfortunately can only be recorded using older units, in realtime (analog or digital (optical)) recording. Your friend's car unit supports MDLP, so it *can* play the LP2 or LP4 tracks. I think the best options available to you at the moment are to either replace your old car MD unit with one which supports MDLP, or to replace it with a CD unit that has a standard 3.5mm line-in which you can connect to the headphone output of your Minidisc player.
