What is the minimum system requirements to do high quality small time recording? i.e. How much Ram and disk space, and What cpu and soound card?

I want to know what is important for recording sound on a computer. How much
memory and disk space is required? what kind of sound card would you
recomend? What are the important specs to watch in
sound cards? Is Sound Blaster the way to go? why or why not? Is there something else that I
am missing that I need to be aware of?

I would realy apreciate any information you could give me, or any pointers or
recomendations that would get me going in the right direction.
