This kind of question can cause quite a lot of confusion for people. You can spend $10,000 on a system or you can spend $1,000. It's really up to you. The first thing to do is know what kind of recording quality you want. If you're just going to lay down some demos and maybe MP3 them, you can use a program such as n-Track Studio to lay down your tracks. But to answer your question, if you're doing multitrack hard disc recording you might want to consider the following configuration:

* 32 Meg of RAM (64 Meg recommended)
* Hard disc - the larger the better if you are doing multi-track. If the average pop song can take up 50 Meg, think about how much space 8 audio tracks would take up if you recorded them in 16 bit stereo sound.
* Sound cards can cause a lot of debate but a full duplex, 16-bit sound card is the absolute minimum.

Remember, this is just a basic, low-budget system. There probably will be people who diagree with me. They're welcome to throw theor two cents in, we're all here to learn.

Cheers
Geoff
