macintosh: tape to cdr

I wish to transfer audio files from tape to CDR without first creating an intermediate AIFF file on my hard drive, and then burning this file. I have two questions:

1. I understand that "Spin Doctor" will do this. Could you explain how this works?
2. Is this true--I just bought a CDR recorder, bundled with Toast (but not Spin Doctor). As I understand it, one route I could take is to buy Spin Doctor, but this comes in a $99 package with Toast.

My question is: could you advise me as about alternate software that does Spin Doctor's function with Toast?

Thanks
