Help! I'm getting echoes, stutters and skips when recording waves to my hard drive

I am running an AMD board and 486 enhanced 160 mHz,
32 megs RAM, and SoundBlaster 32 with memory upgrade.

When I copy long audio extractions from my old record
collection onto my hard drive, I get lots of skips,
echoes and stutters.

Do I need a faster machine or what?
