inserting music notes into word processor file

Help! I have browsed through and tried some of the download-able software but am unable to find what I need. Is there a software program that will allow me to use musical note symbols without using staves? For example, I would like to be able to have some text, then insert a quarter note as an example of what was said in the text.
Any help or tips that you can give me are greatly appreciated.

I drew a bunch of them. That was the only way I could insert music symbols in my word processor.

I used the microsoft program that came with windows. Any graphics program can be used for this. I've never tried doing this from MS Word itself, but I bet it can be done (creating the graphic by hand, that is).
