: I just purchased a used turntable with stereo plugs and a ground wire. What do I need to purchase to plug this turntable into the sound card of my PC?

If you want to get music onto your computer
from vinyl, your best bet is a standalone
CD recorder. Prices start at around $300-$400
(for a Philips consumer model), but if you
pay around $500-$700 for a Tascam professional
CD recorder, like the CD-RW2000, you'll get
a very clean copy onto CD. Then you can just
play or 'rip' the CD to a .wav file on you
PC (with any reasonably new CD-ROM drive).

But the output from your turntable is probably
not at 'line' level. (Its probably about 1000
times too quiet : phono output level.) So you
need a phono-amplifier. A lot of home amplifiers
(but not all anymore) have a 'phono stage' or
record/phono as one of the inputs. Get one of
these, wire up the record player to it, and
connect the CD recorder like a tape deck that
you want to record to.

Any amplifier over $200, like a Kenwood, would do.

Or, you could use a DJ mixer (which takes in
a record player signal and puts out 'line out'
from the master output.) But you won't have any
speakers to check what is being recorded. So
get some headphones. I use a Numark DM1200
mixer ($200 at Sam Ash, Mars Music or similar
on-line store.)

There are a lot better mixers, but this is good
enough for me to make CDs I can DJ live in a
club.

(Now this 'aint a cheap solution, but it'll
do you records justice.)

Jon.
