I used to use a Tascam Porta studio when they first became popular and used to get ten tracks out of it. If you think about that mathematically, it works out. It's pretty dangerous doing that in the respect that bouncing involves mixing some of the tracks and then routing them down to a single track and then having to do it again. As you probably know, if you don't consider 'everything' before you press record (levels, compression( DBX off generally) etc etc) then you could screw up the original performance. Apart from that, the quality of the overall sound is going to get pretty ropey. Avoid it if you can... I looked for some information on the Fostex x-77 but couldn't find much. I suspect you could bounce with it which is usually done by literally setting the tracks with material on to 'Play' and then selecting the tracks to record to, to record. The input selector on the record track might have another option than line in, like tape in or something like that.
