I have had some good results with the AnalogX vocal remover program. I find that the program works well on some tracks and terrible on others (in fact more than most don't work very well). So the first step is to try lots of tracks with AnalogX Vocal Remover and be satisfied with the ones that work the best. The second step which I do is to put the original recording and the vocal-removed recording into a a multi-track editor (I use vegas, but anyone will do, Nuendo, Cool Edit, etc) and line up the two tracks. I crossfade the vocal-removed track and the original only on the parts where the singer actually sings, retaining the intro, solos, interludes etc. of the original. Even music between phrases and words can be crossfaded back in. This is great, because the music is always a little bit compromised, but it insures that whenever you hear the music alone it sounds like the original and when you are singing the other parts it is less noticable because of the vocal.
