We get a lot of people posting questions here about the very basics of making music on computers - and that's ok, but not all questions are answered in a way that makes some difficult problems easy to understand for beginners.

I thought it might help if beginners new which books could really help, so here are a few books I recommend - you can either buy them at Amazon by clicking on the links, or you may be able to find them at your local library.

I am completely new to the world of making music and now have a job which includes...
a) taking sound from old reel 2 reel tapes (mostly spoken) and putting them in digital format for archiving and up loading on a web site
b) doing the same with old audio tapes and making sellable CDs
c) recording live music and again producing CDs for sale.

The Billboard book looks perfect but was wondering about Sound Forge 7. It's the program i have been given to work with. Any ideas on wether the info in the billboard guide will give me enough of a clue so i can just figure it out from there or if not any suggestions on a good on-line course/CD/book?

Many thanks

The Billboard book is a good starting point if you have no experience with using computers to record and edit music - particularly if you have no audio engineering background at all.

There are some good training materials for Sound Forge 7 - here are some for you to check out:

Sound Forge Power! - this is by Scott Garrigus who has been a very well respected contributor to Hitsquad.com over the years and his book has been the most popular with Hitsquad users.

Sony Sound Forge 7 VTC Training CD

Whilst books do help to an extent...its your experimentation that will really get things going.

I however do have my music making process on my site if you wanna check it: www.nashmusic100.com/music101

FL Studio is great for making beats, Cubase and SONAR are also really good tools for recording your band.
