Can anyone offer advice on what the best means of recording onto my laptop might be? My old desktop had both mic and line in inputs, so the guitar sounded great. My new laptop only has a mic in, and the guitar sounds awful! I've scanned ebay and it looks like I'll need a USB audio interface, something like a Tascam US-122.
However. I'm wondering if there's a cheaper was of doing this, for example a guitar jack adapter that goes to USB? Might be wishful thinking, and happy to settle on a pre-amp type thing, but any suggestions as to what I could go for? Something with phantom power would be good condenser mics too.

There is a two-part solution:
1-Purchase the iMic by Griffin. Look here: http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic2/
under Audio, iMic.
As you can see, the iMic is an inexpensive ($40) USB input/output device for either audio (from stereo) or microphone input from live recordings, etc. No software needed and it will work on any Mac or PC with a USB 1.1 or 2.0 port.
2-Download Audacity here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Audacity is a open-source (free), full-featured, VST-compliant music editor capable of either input (from iMic) or output for .wav, mp3 conversions.
Hope this helps. |
