I seek feedback regarding your success with the various available DA interfaces. I am concluding the reference is an RME Fireface 400 or 800. But finances may require I spend 1/2 or 1/4 that amount. Perhaps a half-way reference is the MOTU Ultralite, and Edirol, M-Audio and Emu offer choices at lower cost points.
What I do not know is what is actually sacrificed at the lower price points.
I assume the main goal is the best pre-amps, convertors, and headphone amps possible, and next perhaps consider the types of input outputs such as including optical.And some may factor in software but I conclude that this is not so relevant.
What did you learn after buying to your joy, to your dismay?
What details in use proved important considerations with respect to choosing?
Any analytical considerations (critical or praise) are appreciated.
