Hi,

The Line-In Balance in the Audio Properties has frozen! (W98SE).

I cannot record Line-In stereo anymore; both channels recieve the same signal, even if I alter the sound input balance from left to right, both recording bars of my recording software remain the same.

I have tried recording via W98 sound recorder and Creative's software, and they so the same, so this is obviously a Windows issue (surprise! surprise!).

I have no problems playing anything else back in stereo; all sliders work there, but not in the recording options.

Many thanks...

You say "anymore" so can we assume that it was something that at one point in time you were able to do and now it doesn't work?

Although I am a Mac user, I will say that MS's first signs of showing an adaptable and half reliable operating system came after Windows 98..

That's a good line but in no way promotes resolution to this problem: )

I wonder if the line in is nothing more then a good card gone bad. Only way one could know for certain is to remove the card and replace with a new sound card.

Windows98se is a very reliable platform but being on an older box can be the issue due to the components burning out. Therefore it would be the first thing I would consider, is the soundcard bad. You can have line in and not have line out.

If my hands were on it I would replace the soundcard.

Shove a friends sound card in there.. see if it encounters the same probs. If not, like Brien says, maybe time for a new one. Sure its not a definite way to find out if it is actually a hardware prob but it will help you cut it down. Or try your soundcard in someone elses comp.
