essentially the controller is the master that gives the command that anyone else in the food chain follows.
Do you have a clear understanding of what MIDI is/does?

MIDI - Musical Instrument Digital Interface
You Can assign a different Musical Instrument to each key on your Musical Keyboard. ( Mapping )
Drums Usually start on Channel 10 ( Industry Standard ).
Programs like Cubase, work well.
Multi Track Recording, you can even map effects to each Key and Punch in the effect any time during playback/Record on the fly.
