Does a copied CD equal lesser audio quality ?

I'm not sure if I'm in the right place for this question, but here goes.

I heard it through the grapevine that a copied CD has a weaker sound quality than the original you copy it from. So, if I were to copy an already copied CD onto a different disc, would the sound be lower quality or will it still be as good as the first copy?

Digital media that is recorded as a direct copy, is exactly the same as the original. However, points to bear in mind when copying...

1. Don't use a program that will compress a CD quality audio file (WAV) to MP3 or WMA automatically. Compressed files are reduced quality.

2. Don't change the sample rate of the copy. CD audio is 16 bit 44.1Khz. Converting to a lower bit rate such as 8 bit will reduce the quality.

3. If you are copying MP3's, don't change the bitrate of the compressed file. I.E. Don't change a 128Kbps file to a 96Kbps file to save space on your disc. The lower the bitrate, the lower the quality. You cannot recover the "lost" data from an MP3.

4. Don't apply any added FX, EQ, Normalise, etc to the copy.

5. CDR media has a limited shelf-life. Make sure you re-copy your backups every 2-3 years, as data loss will occur.

6. To avoid burn failures, copy the disc at as slow a speed as you are comfortable with. I wouldn't recommend copying at greater than 20x. Discs copied at high speeds will lose data more quickly.

I would only add that I use CDEX and I can tell it to copy and check until
it gets a copy that is an exact match (bitwise) to the original. Rolling Eyes
