Here's my story. I used an ancient sequencer on an ancient Mac laptop for 13 years. The sequencer was Musicshop by OpCode.
The laptop died and the Musicshop discs are on old-fashioned floppys, which can't be read by my new Mac. OpCode no longer exists. I can buy a floppy disc reader, then find that the old Musicshop is incompatible with my OS-X , or look for a new sequencer.
What are some of the good sequencer softwares out there? Do they allow some on-screen notation? Are they user-friendly? Are they reeeeally expensive? |

There are so many software sequencer programs to choose from.
One of the most popular sequencers is Cakewalk Sonar. The new version of it, Sonar 7, was released recently. But you can still get Sonar 6 if you want. Of course version 7 will cost more than version 6. I think version 6 is running for like $300-$400.
If you're looking for something inexpensive, you can try out some these sequencers to get you started here... http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/win95/AUDIO_SEQUENCERS/
But if you would like to try out the more expensive and popular sequencers, you can go to their home website and download the demo for them. Google Cakewalk Sonar 6 or 7, Steinberg Cubase, or FL Studio 7. |

MusicShop is THE best sequencer for the Mac. I still use it in OS9 myself. I have to switch over from OSX to OS9 when working in sequence mode. I have Nuendo, Cubase, Logic, Pro Tools and everything else. But none of them are as intuitive as my beloved MusicShop and the way that the interface, score mode, and arrangement window works.
I am looking desperately for an OSX version similar to the workflow of this program.
For the guy who only has MusicShop on floppy, I have version 2.0 on disc and stuffed in a file as well if you want it, you can have it for download. Just contact me. Trust me, you'll want to stay working in it in OS9 if that is what you are used to and your creativity and workflow are fast with. Use OSX for your audio and to import your finished midi files into but to do your writing and creating of the midi files and arrangements, staying in OS9 and MusicShop is the best way for me. |
