You say that you need a producer. Are you sure about that? Many times you get a producer once you have already signed a recording contract. Even if you did manage to get a producer then what? You will need studio time. How will you pay the producer? (Unless you can get them to do it for free).
If you want to seriously become a singer you have to acquaint yourself with the process. You have to start making plans! Usually I will suggest that one start in their local area. Get yourself known, get yourself a reputation and start to gain a following. Sometimes you don't even need a producer! One can record their own CD's using their own computer nowadays!
There are things that you can and should be doing RIGHT NOW! to further your career along. The only one true thing that you need is DESIRE! and you go from there. You need someone to help acquaint you with the process and show you the things that you should be doing now to reach your dream career. I bet you haven't even thought of all the things that you could be doing now using your computer to help you! Computers come with the most basic of programs that you should use to help further your career! If you seriously want to pursue this you should have your plans already and laid out for you to do! Do you write music? What about songs? Do/Can you write your own? You have to decide what kind of singer you want to be! How are you going to get the word out that you are a singer and you're ready to be signed to a contract? Do you know anything about contracts? what about copyrights? Did you know that if you're underaged you will need a parent or guardian's consent?
You need to know more and you need someone to help you! |

Hello Everyone!!! My name is Milani and I have been writing songs since I was 14yrs old. My mother said I have a gift, cause when a song comes to me a melody comes with it. I'm not istrumentally inclined and need help. I already did the recording studio thing for about 6 months 10yrs ago and they still could'nt help. They said that they are unable to put music to my songs unless they create the music then me add my song to a different melody. My songs has been collecting dust ever since. I'm still writing songs though. My most rescent ones are for 9/11 I created in 01/2002 and a gospel song I wrote in 2003. Is there anyone that can help me. My family told me to sell my songs, but I don't know about that. They came from me and I would rather sing them myself. Help me out of my delema [/list] |

If you're serious about wanting to become a singer you should at least have a demo tape put together and that is going to have to include music. Remember what it is you are trying to do here and that is to get signed on as a singer and if you want a record company to hire you you will have to show them that you are serious about wanting to be a singer. Besides that you should also understand that others will be submitting demos as well and you will want yours to stand out as much as possible.
As far as the music is concerned it may come down to you either having someone that will help you with the melody whether you pay them or you can get someone to do it for free to help you.
A lot can be accomplished with computers nowadays. A lot of artists have studios in their own home and use this as their own label instead of being on one of the major ones.
So if you're serious about wanting to become a professional singer you are going to have to come to terms with the musical aspect as well.

Hi my name is Taylor um.. my mom won't let me be a singer (even though I can do it) probably becasue I'm 12 but still I have to wait till I'm 16 and can get emancipated. I don't want to wait that long in fact, i can't. How am I gonna convince her I'm ready and even as an artist I will stay in school. She thinks if I get big that I'll drop out like my brother but I won't. Hey, maybe I won't go to college but by no means am I gonna drop out. Although what she dosen't know is that I know what getting signed, a press kit, and all of that means. She thinks I'm a little 9 year old screaming to get rich and famous which is not my plan at all. I just want to become a professional singer. Sure, the fame and money is a nice bonus, but that's not my main goal at all. If anyone can give me some advice about getting her to lighten up please let me know. Thanks

If you are serious about wanting to become a professional singer then its time to get serious! You mention your age and how your mother won't let you and while you will need her permission for some things there are other things that you can and should be doing if you are serious about wanting to become a professional singer.
Do you have anything that is a demo? If not and depending on how new your computer is you should be making a demo. And if your demo is not the way you want it keep tweaking it until it is the way that you want it.
You should start a folder and call it your singing career folder. Decide exactly what type of singer you want to be! Is there anybody that inspires you or who you want to emulate like Madonna or Celine Dion? Who ever it is - learn more about them. Where do you live? Find the opportunities in your area to help you become a singer. You mentioned that you know things about press releases and such but have you made any - and what will the press releases be about?
While you are limited to what you can do (because of your mother) there are still a lot of things that you can do. Heck you can even start your own record label using your computer. But you have to know about copyrights and things like that.
If you truly want to be a professional singer now is the time that you should be getting serious about it. So many times people want to be this and that but they won't do anything about it. You should read some of the stories of how some of the most famous singers got started. As well as them inspiring you they should show you that they made it possible. |

Well to start, Well truth be told I have a Manager/ producer/ songwriter Unfotrtunately I live in Washington. So I have to save up money to go to N.Y. Except I don't think he's a scam but he quit mailing me. I've been trying to get a hold of him but I don't know what's going on. But I've really been wondering how do u make a demo??? I have a within 5 years old Microsoft XP computer. It's really fast. MY own computer well It's not that good but It's within that region. It's being worked on right now tho. I want to be a pop singer and I am in love with Christina Aguilera. I know what you mean but I really don't have the time or want etc to have my own label. Thanks.

First of all since your main concern is being a singer I think that you should concentrate on that. What is most important is whether or not you signed any kind of contract with the manager/producer etc......because that an affect any work you do now like the demo tape and such - so you will have to find out if you are under any legal obligation with them.
If your computer can make CD's then you can make a Demo tape. Even on an older computer you can make a casette tape and transfer that and turn it into an mp3!
I have to remember that I am of an older generation here because I still have a casette recorder, a VINYL record player and a lot of the "older" gadgets.
You say that you want to be a singer right? And you want to be in the same category as Christina Aguilera - who is a very popular singer now. You haven't told me whether or not you can write lyrics and/or music or whether or not you just want to be a singer. The very first thing that I would do is first decide on the above - exactly what your talents are - ie writing lyrics, music or both - then once that is decided I would make a plan and yes I said a plan - Why? Because the more organized you are the better (and sooner) you will get what you want.
Let's say for examples sake that you follow a very good piece of advice which is to start locally and branch yourself out - meaning becoming a famous singer in your local area and letting that news spread. Do you know that there are singing related jobs/opportunities that you should be looking into that are available in your own area - and I'm not talking about schools and places where you have to pay - I'm talking about the opportunities that pay you. What if you can't find such opportunities in your area? Then guess what - CREATE THE OPPORTUNITIES YOURSELF!
Even with the older equipemnt that I have I can take a person's voice and add music to it to make them a demo and send it back to them in an mp3 format! Now if my older computer can do that then you can't tell me that you can't do the same on your computer.
I have had a chance to see a lot of the back stories of how a lot of singers got started and they started with so much less than you have available right now. Besides making a plan for myself one of the next things that I would be doing is scoping out my local area to find available opportunities and resources - People often don't see what is right in front of them! |

Even that u live in a small town , there r still other ways to connect w/ other talented people. One way is the internet, there r plenty of websites that have a host of talented people like producers, songwriters, and other singers ready to collaborate w/other singers. If u want to make a good demo there r many computer programs that r great for recording nice sounding music. Even tho u say ur not a computer person most of them r easy to use if u take time to go thru the tutorial and help. I have been doing producing and writing and recording for about 6yrs now. It's not easy at first, i started when i was around 14. I had no idea what i was doing at first , but as i did it more and more i became better, just like singing., the more u practice the better u get. If ur having trouble writing lyrics just sit down one day and start writing about ur life and situations u have been thru. It may not be in song format at first but don't worry about writing it like a song just write., and then when ur finshed pick out lyrics u love (i.e. christina aguilera since u like her) and study them and they way there written and then use the same format to arrange what u have into a song. With songwriting the more u write the better each song gets . These days u won't be able to step a foot in the music biz if u don't have ur own material, and now the trend is singer/songwriters. There is not more studio producer singers like it was a couple of years ago. People like Briteny spears ,christina aguilera have all shifted toward writing some of there own music on there new albums instead of the studio produced albums they had when they first came out. so if ur interested in some websites and links and tips on music production and songwriting email me at divastar870@yahoo.com. I'll do the best i can to help u with it. |
