I have just hauled my Cheetah Masterseries 5V out of the attic so that my nephew could use it. Plugged in in to check it was OK. I got the COLD message n the screen - so everything fine.
My nephew connected it to his computer and switched on now the screen shows all lights on or just 4 full stops or nothing or combinations of lights. Also all lights to the right of the screen are on all the time power is connected. And no midi output.
He told me that nothing happened between my test and his, no bumps or coffee spills etc
I have tried tracking down Cheetah they appear to have folded.
Any thoughts on the next step people - try to avoid suggesting it goes n the bin I have a sentimental attachment to this keyboard. |

| Damn sorry it took so long - iI'll be frank there was a bereavement in the family and I lost track of this. So yes I am still interested in sorting my cheetah. I would be great if you can offer some advice. |

The 'Cold' message indicates the power-on test has failed, usually due to the internal memory backup battery going flat.
If you've got the manual, page 32 explains all, but if not...
You need to do a factory reset by first getting it to dispay the Cold message.
If you no longer see it when you power-on, you can force it into that state by powering on while holding down the Shift button.
When you see the Cold message, press the Start/Stop button and it should then display 'CLR?'. Press the Enter button and all internal memory will be cleared (it's probably corrupted if it's been left untouched for ages).
This shold get it going until you next power-off...
...however, if your Cheetah is like mine, the internal battery has probably died, so every time you power-on it keeps going into the Cold state.
New batteries are only a few GBP, but it's a fiddly job to replace as it's soldered to the PCB. I took mine apart and noticed the battery had leaked over the PCB, but once this was cleaned up and the battery replaced, it now works a treat. While it's apart, you could re-seat the ROM chip in its socket.
I also had another problem with the pitch wheel sending spurious pitch-bend messages. This was due to the potentiometer wearing out, so I replaced all 3 pots while it was dismantled (again, cheap but fiddly!), and it's now as good as new.
You can see the working Cheetah in my Sequetron demo at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzXlWUWEc0g
Hope this helps, let me know if you need any further info.

Hi plz - still no joy I get random lights each time I switch it on but no COLD or any other words. Battery registers 4v when power is off. I reckon its circuits are fried - there was some goo on it and I cleaned and dried it then tried again but no change. Where are you - would you like it for spares - its yours if you want to pay the shipping costs. |

I think the battery is 3.6v but not 100% sure without taking the lid off. If so, then your 4v measurement seems ok.
Just double-check the factory reset process:-
1. Switch power off.
2. Press & hold down the Shift button (lower left).
3. Switch power on. Should display COLD.
4. Release the shift button. Should still display COLD.
5. Press & release the Start button. Should display CLR?.
6. Press & release the Enter button. Should display 5Oct, which is the normal '5 octave' state.
If steps 1 to 3 don't work, then try switching off and prise out the ROM chip from its socket and re-insert it. Maybe the contacts are a bit tarnished. Make sure you're earthed before doing this in case you destroy the chip with static, e.g. touch the chassis first, or use a wrist strap. Then repeat the reset process.
Failing that, I'm out of ideas, but many thanks for your kind offer. I'm in Wales, UK.
