In 8 weeks we've discovered that we think we're good at building dance tracks, but are quickly outgrowing garageband. We've generated 12 solid tracks so far.

So I'm shopping for new software, currently focused on Abelton Suite or Reason/Record with a couple of parameters at the root:

1. We'd eventually like to play live knowing that some additional hardware purchases will be necessary. Right now we have a keyboard, a KORG kaosPro and some percussion instruments

2. We'd like to be able to easily swap tracks with other geeks so flexible formatting /import / export are important

3. We'd like to be able to add real instruments, both in studio and on stage

4. We'd appreciate a vibrant community of users to exchange ideas and work out issues with

5. Being a software designer, I really like a solid GUI. We don't want "Windows for Synth" if you know what I mean.

6. Lastly, it'd be great to get our work OUT of garageband and master it in the new package... but we're realistic about this.

Any advice, experience to share?

Personally I'd got with ACID, been using it quite a bit and I think it's better than both of those.

There's also a large user base

When choosing software, its all about personal opinion but heres what i think:

If you want flexibility and ease of use, go with ableton. The new ableton 8.1 is brilliant as it has a wide array of plugins which come with the program. It also supports VST's so if you want to add any more plugins to your arsenal then you can. It is easy to timestretch any audio and editing is a pleasure, and you can record audio. You cant really go wrong with it, ableton have really done something great and its easy to learn.

If you prefer a more old-school setup and one which is more true to that of analogue equipment (the way its routed not the sound), go for reason. With the new record program, it is really going up in the world. Many people dis it but thats because they havent used it to the extent they could have. I have used it for years and now do most of my MIDI programming in Reason and the rest in Protools. It is not as flexible as other software as it does not support plugins, but you can use the rewire option and use it with another program. It is easy to use once you get past the initial jungle of knobs and buttons and very rewarding when you make something sweet.

Both are great pieces of software, i suggest you ask a few mates who have both and have a try and see what you think. Other programs like Logic or Protools are brilliant and professional standard (good to know them well if your trying to get a job in a studio), the only problem is that you need a dedicated interface for tools and you need an expensive mac for logic.

At the end of the day, its not what you use, its how you use it. Its like golf - Phil Mickleson doesnt need the techincally best clubs to play a great game of golf.

Hope this has helped and good luck with your music!

As CJ say, you can Rewire the two packages together if you still can't figure which you like more. I tend to sequence from Ableton and use Reson as a sound source, but that's personal preference!

Rewiring through Ableton is simply a case of creating a track in Abletion and then telling it to listen to Reason - you can find tutorial vids such as this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnvdIqT0B_8 - which make understading it a lot easier than attempting to work it out from text alone.
