Press Release

The Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas recently purchased a Yamaha Motif ES6 to enhance the capabilities of its Electronic Music Program.

“The Motif ES will enhance the hardware and software integration of our facility and provide our students the opportunity to
work with state-of the art-technologies like mLan and physical modeling,” said Dr. Martin Sweidel, Associate Professor of
Composition at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts. “We have a strong program in music composition offering the Bachelor’
s and Master’s degree, and the electronic music studio is a key component of that program.”

The Electronic Music Studio is well equipped for research, creation, production, and instruction of electro-acoustic music in a
comfortable and elegant environment. An Apple G5/dual 2.0 GHz computer system runs the latest in software for composing,
recording, editing, and mixing music. An extensive list of hardware, outboard gear, and musical instrument technology is
monitored through an excellent stereo/5.1 speaker system, rounding out the facility. The newest addition is the Yamaha Motif
ES6 with an mLAN expansion board and the Virtual Acoustic Plug-in.

James Tran, a graduate of the school’s Master’s program in Music Composition, now works as the Keyboard and Software
Department Manager for Brook Mays in Dallas, part of the Brook Mays Musc Group, a family of 63 retail locations operating
in 8 states under 10 different brand names that carry a full line of musical instruments and music technology products.

An accomplished composer, piano, and keyboard player, Tran has become a relied upon technology consultant for the school
and has worked with Yamaha sales and product personnel to install the Motif ES6 as well as numerous Yamaha music
products at SMU including Disklavier and Clavinova digital pianos in the school’s piano lab.

“The electronic music studio and the faculty members were a big part of my decision to attend the Meadows School of the
Arts,” said Tran. “I’m proud to help keep the studio updated with the latest technology for current and future students.”

Students and faculty are able to explore and create music in this exciting field and produce professional-quality recordings of
their projects and compositions. Students have used the studio to create projects in collaboration with other divisions of the
Meadows School of the Arts including dance, theater, and cinema/television. Works created in the studio meet the highest
production standards and have been selected for performance on regional, national, and international conferences, festivals
and broadcasts. Small class sizes allow greater access to the studio than many larger schools, while compositional approaches
covered in the Electro-Acoustic Music courses include a wide variety of styles and allow students to master technical
understanding and explore personal creative interests. Multi-track recording, MIDI orchestrations, synthesis, scoring for
film/video, digital editing, surround-sound mixing, and CD/DVD production are all supported by this flexible and
contemporary facility.
