View Original Thread: Software for Scores

Ewen77

Hi there,
I have been composing music for full orchestra and wondered if there is any software out there that would enable me to use my scores to make audio files of what I have composed. I have tried midi programmes but they sound terrible. Is there anything more advanced?

Ideally I wish to apply my scores into the programme and then have a reasonable good playback of the score. Much like how Guitar Pro works.

Any ideas are most appreciated

Good audio playback will require a solid sound card / interface.

Try doing a google for your request. Or look here: http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/

You get out what you put in.

Okay, i've looked round a bit more and found 'Vienna Instruments' Looks like the kind of software for the job... However, it's really expensive. Does anyone know an alternative to it that I may investigate?

Thanks

Hey there,

what are you composing your scores in? A piece of software like Sibelius?

If you haven't tried out Sibelius, you might want to, it's pretty sweet:

I write my music in Noteworthy Composer, but there are several other really good notation programs you can use (Sibelius, Finale). Inside Noteworthy I create as many staves as I need and assign an instrument to each. That's good for compostion, but as you noted MIDI playback really doesn't sound great. So at that point I save the MIDI file and import that MIDI file into Cubase (but you can use whatever mixer software you want). Then instead of using the default MIDI voiceset, I use sampled instrument voices from Garritan Personal Orchestra (www.garritan.com). Using those voices (usually referred to as VST Instruments), I can produce a much better sounding final product and save it as an mp3 (or wave, whatever). It takes a lot of work to get it sounding realistic, but it is certainly possible.

For an example of what I can do using this method, listen to this mp3. And please keep in mind I'm fairly new not only at using Cubase/GPO, but also at the whole composition game. Also note that some of the sounds in this production are intentionally synthy:

For a sample of what somebody really skilled can do with GPO and MIDI composition, listen to thes mp3's.
