This might be a worrying sign for the American Idol machine. Is the public over the phenomenon? Or does the music just plain suck?

I reckon the format needs a tweak. Maybe they could integrate other reality shows into it. Maybe a combination between Xtreme Makeover and Fear Factor. :P

I don't think just because they come from a TV show people will respect them any less. They are very talented people and some are a lot better singers than what you find with some of the popular non-idol bands atm... say JET??

William Hung may have been ugly and unable to sing, but that is not why he was made famous. He was made famous because he was a good guy and gave it a GO..!. And that's what everyone liked about him!

Yeah, but where is he now?

I watched the original Pop Idol i the Uk and just got pissed off with their opinion of what type of 'Pop Idol' they were looking for. It turned out (strangely enough, yawn... ) that the criteria was for young, vunerable good looking kids to sing some 'mediocre' music over. (One moment springs to mind when some bloke from the local supermarket sung a Meatloaf song. One of the judges pointed at the "Pop Idol" sign and explained that they are looking for a new Pop Idol. He pointed out that Meatloaf is one of the best selling Pop Idols in the Uk. Not that the judges understood..).

Seriously. Aren't we all totally pissed off with listening to karaoke productions? The idea was good. It was run by the music industry marketting department and so had no soul...

there will always be a mass market for mediocrity, my dear boy, because people, for the most part, are mediocre.

but seriously, the success of the idol phenom isn't about the music per se. it's about the story, the drama, the dizzying highs and the humiliating lows. let the kids sms their votes in and take part in the great judgement. yes, the units are meant to be shifted, but they won't be without the rags to assumed riches tale thrown in.

and remember the demographic. i doubt you're part of it. you're on the outside looking in.

what next? punk idol.

simon (looking bored): 'yes, your name is?'
'aushwitz'
simin: 'what's your real name?'
auscwitz: 'quentin.'
simon: 'and what are you going to sing for us tonight?'
'chemical warfare by the dead kennedys'
paula: 'oh i like that song.'
randy: 'go on then'
SINGS SONG ACAPELLA
randy: 'that was awesome. you nailed it, dawg.'
paula: 'yes, your anger was very convincing.'
simon: 'honestly, aushwitz, you're going to need to lose some weight if you want to be a convincing punk. i've never met a fat heroin addict in my entire life. i'd also recommend spitting a bit more during the 3/4 section...
paula: '...i was hoping he'd spit in my face.'
simon: 'yes, but you're through to the next round'.
