|
|
Ive got an eight track digital recorder and im starting to use software samplers and sequencers but i dont know how to transfer my projects into them.
I saved a project to a disc and loaded it into my computer. The individual tracks come up as .dat files but when i go into the software it doesnt recognise them. Do i need to convert them or do i feed my projects into the software directly using cables ? Im using Fruity Loops and Windows XP. |

Many digital 8-tracks use their own filetypes. Some of these are compressed filetypes similar to an MP3 file. DAT files are simply data files and only certain programs can read them. Your aim will be to get the files converted to WAV or AIFF files. If they are a compressed format, this may not be possible. I would check your hardware's user manual to see if the machine can export tracks in a more standard format such as WAV or MP3. Once you have these, they can be read by most multitrack recording programs.
If all else fails, you may need to export the audio by recording the audio output from the line-out of your hardware into the line-in of your computer soundcard. This method may introduce some hiss or noise onto the tracks. This can be avoided if your machine has an optical or digital output that your soundcard may accept. You will then need to line up the tracks manually in the software's "arrange" screen, to get them back in sync.

What I had to do with mine was to make the 8track the MIDI Master machine and the computer the slave. Then had to set up a template and insert audio tracks to record to. Since not all my tracks were stereo, I sent a left channel and a right channel to seperate armed audio tracks. One armed track was getting its input from the left side and the other was getting it's input from the right side. Remember after the track is recorded to the computer to remove the input from said track.
With the setup mentioned above when I hit the "record" button in the computer software, the computer was ready to record but does not do anything other then be ready. Then pushing the "play" button on the 8 track starts the song playback and begins the computer recording which aligns the start time of the tracks a little tighter.
You may have to do this several times depending on how many left and right tracks you have to port into the computer.
Hope this helps you some, |
