I am completely new to home recording and am looking for advice on the best music software to purchase.
I play guitar and want to record songs and compositions which I can mix, overdub, add effects etc
Having looked at various products online I would appreciate any advice from other musicians who have used different software.

Hitsquad has a lot of shareware/freeware recrding software. You can locate them at:

You can try some of the product out to become familier with what the software does and also to more define what it is that "you" want or expect from recording software, rather then having "name" product thrown at you at some really high prices:). |

I use MidiNotate Composer for creating and editing my music. I can use it to sequence the parts I can't play, and to work up the printed parts for those I do play acoustically. It's awesome! You can download a free MidiNotate Player, or a free 30 day, fully functional trial version of MidiNotate Musician or MidiNotate Composer at https://www.plimus.com/jsp/download_trial.jsp?contractId=1668869&referrer=harbor1
Use it to check out the sheet music for some of my songs on the MidiNotate User's Community Forum at http://www.notation.com/cgi-bin/discus/discus.cgi. You can also use it to view and play the sheet music for any midi file.

| True, but you cannot record audio in Fruity Loops. Hence the name "loops." |

i didnt read the first post  but FL has nothing to do with loops,inspite of the name...FL is a comlete software studio and you can make all types and genres of music in it,it has wav audio files arranger.However,the guy need s Cakewalk or Cubase.For guitar effects Guitar Rig is good. |

| Just trying to catch up myself Gee Tee, so when you say "FL" and if it is not "Fruity Loops" what is it and where could I get a look at it? |

FL Studio Producers Edition (formerly Fruity Loops) CAN record audio. I use it to record guitar with great success. It also has a ton of other features such as a Vocorder, reverbs, delays etc. You might also want to try Orion Platinum which has awesome built in synths and a real time Impulse Response Processor. Everyone should go to kvr-audio.com, it is the number one resource for computer musicians.
